What attracted me the mst were the things that my father said hadn’t changed. Practically everybdy greeted each ther n the street and wished thers a gd mrning. There was a type f tgetherness there that I’d never really gtten t experience befre. I even saw a different, less severe and mre generus side f my father as he struck up friendly cnversatin with strangers and bught frm the children selling fruits n the street side. My father had grwn up ding the same thing, in an El Salvadr that was in a far rugher shape than the ne in which we fund urselves.
Never befre had I been s prud t be a Salvadran-American as when I’d cme back frm that trip, skin extra-tanned frm the dazzling sun and a belly that had mre than its fair share f delicius fd there. But I’d brught back smething that was better than any suvenir: a sense f cultural identity that was frmerly missing. I wasn’t just Latin, I was Salvadreñ. It happens every spring. As the flwers blssm, bringing clr and fragrance back int ur lives, Beijing’s air fills with fluffy (绒毛般的) white invaders: airbrne seed hairs cming frm the hundreds f thusands f female pplars (杨树) and willws planted arund the city.
Jkingly referred t as “snw in April”, this annual invasin is an annyance t walkers, cyclists, and scter riders, largely because it finds its way up nstrils (鼻孔), and int muths and eyes. T sme peple, it even causes allergic reactins. And it is als easy t catch fire, s needs sweeping away t avid unfrtunate encunters with cigarette butts.
S, why did peple plant s many f them in the capital city cnsidering its bvius drawbacks? Accrding t the Beijing Meterlgical Observatry, there were an average f 26 days f dusty springtime weather in the 1950s. As part f the natinal effrt t refrest, a green belt was in urgent need. Pplars and willws were chsen fr their resistance t cld, drught and pests. As they als require relatively little care and even less watering, they were the ideal chice fr the city. By the time authrities realized they weren’t the right chice, t many had been planted alng streets r squares, hard surfaces where the seed hairs accumulate, nly t be lifted int the air by passing cars r gusts f wind.
Luckily, tw slutins have been fund. The first is a kind f birth cntrl, which is administered in the frm f an injectin, which, like the flu vaccine, must be renewed yearly. It prevents female trees frm prducing seed hairs, but isn’t cheap, althugh it des result in the funny view f bttles fixed, IV-style, t trunks. The ther ne is Sterilizatin, which invlves remving the upper branches f a female tree and grafting (嫁接) male branches in their place, is even mre expensive. Cnsequently, neither apprach has been widely used apart frm arund sensitive areas like hspitals, kindergartens and schls.
Pplars and willws are still being planted. They are, after all, hardy and d an excellent jb f absrbing CO2, cling the streets, and prviding green relief, but female trees have been banned since 2015. Hpefully, as their numbers decrease, s will the April Snws.

A system that restres cmmunicatin between the brain and spine has enabled a man paralyzed by a spinal crd injury t regain near natural walking ability.
A biking accident 11 years ag left 40-year-ld Gert-Jan Oskam paralyzed, with an incmplete spinal crd injury. Five years later, he enrlled in a clinical trial, after which he regained the ability t step with a walker, but he had difficulty starting and stpping, and culd walk nly ver flat surfaces.
“Using the walker fr three years, he hit a plateau in his frmer recvery, and he was interested in smething new,” says Grégire Curtine, a neurscientist at the Écle Plytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. “S he became ur first test pilt.”
The new study aimed t hand cntrl ver t Oskam’s brain. Curtine and clleagues added a brain implant t create a system that translates thught int mvement. Tw electrde arrays (数组) that sit n the surface f the brain recrd activity frm the sensrimtr crtex (感觉运动皮层), a regin f the brain that helps direct muscle mvements. These signals are sent wirelessly t a prcessing unit that cnverts them int stimulatin patterns, which are transmitted t the spinal crd implant.
After implantatin, Curtine and clleagues asked Oskam t attempt leg jint mvements while they analyzed his brain activity. They fund it indeed allwed mapping brain signals t intended mvements. The researchers als calibrated (校准) the system s that Oskam culd cntrl the amunt f mvement and adapt his ft placement and even climb staircases.
It has been tw years, and the brain implant has remained stable and reliable. The extent f Oskam’s recvery delivered quality f life bsts, such as mving arund the huse independently, r standing at a bar drinking with friends. “That’s the gal f almst all the peple wh are paralyzed,” says V. Reggie Edgertn, a physilgist at Ranch Ls Amigs Natinal Rehabilitatin Center in Dwney, Calif., wh was nt invlved in the study. “T be standing at a bar, lking peple eye t eye.”
The researchers think the apprach will wrk fr ther patients, but cautin that the extent f recvery may depend n the severity f injury. “Yu have t be careful t calibrate expectatins,” Curtine says. “but I’m cnfident we can reprduce the same utcme, especially in individuals with incmplete spinal crd injury.”
32.Which is the key t the new system?

Vlunteering at a library prbably isn’t hw mst high schl students want t spend their free time. As many schls have made cmmunity service hurs a graduatin requirement, schl districts hpe that students pick up a few mre things ther than a number n their reprt cards. 36 Shuld cmpleting vlunteer wrk still be cnsidered vlunteering even thugh it’s required?
Accrding t Amber Han, “Cmmunity service gives students the pprtunity t be expsed t cmmunities that need help.” Sme students cming frm well-ff cmmunities may have never actually seen thers struggle. 37 By expsing them t the realities f ther peple’s lives, students are mre likely t be pen-minded and cnsiderate f thers’ cnditins.
Students can als use vlunteering as an pprtunity t use their knwledge frm schl. Fr students taking envirnmental classes, cmmunity service events like beach cleanups allw them t have hands-n experience with what they learn in schl. Nt nly can they use their knwledge while vlunteering, but they can als explre career paths they may have an interest in. 38
Apart frm gaining expsure t different cmmunities and using their knwledge, vlunteers can gain cmmunicatin and leadership skills. Rebecca Kam added that thrugh vlunteering, she had the chance t wrk with her partners and take leadership. 39 If vlunteers enjy the wrk they are ding and the rganizatin wants wrkers with their skill set, they may be ffered a jb.
40 While cmpleting vlunteer hurs as a requirement seems insincere, the benefits make cmmunity service rewarding fr bth vlunteers and their cmmunity.
A.Students frm pr families take n respnsibilities earlier
B.Withut the requirement, they may never seek such chances.
C.But frcing students t vlunteer is nt genuine cmmunity help.

故选A项。
根据最后一段“The researchers think the apprach will wrk fr ther patients, but cautin that the extent f recvery may depend n the severity f injury. “Yu have t be careful t calibrate expectatins,” Curtine says. “but I’m cnfident we can reprduce the same utcme, especially in individuals with incmplete spinal crd injury.” 故选A项。

“the chance t d sth.”
故填is traced。
故填Having been interested/Interested。
根据“the primary purpse f the Strandbeests has changed ver time”和“their attractive mvement and cmplex design cntinue t amaze bservers”可知,前后句是让步转折关系,所以可以用“while/thugh/althugh”引导让步状语从句,且位于句首,首字母需大写。故填While/Thugh/Althugh。
故填a。
66.Des AI Creatin Have Artistic Value?
I’ve been fllwing this discussin with great interest. Al has been widely used in artistic creatin, frm painting and music cmpsitin t petry and even film prductin. These Al-generated wrks ften impress audiences with their cmplexity and creativity.
Hwever, I believe AI creatins have artistic value but lack the emtinal depth f human expressin. Art is nt just abut patterns and aesthetics; it reflects persnal experiences, emtins and cultural backgrunds. While AI can mimic styles and generate impressive pieces, it des nt create with intent r persnal insight.
All in all, AI can be a pwerful tl fr artists but cannt replace human creativity. N matter hw technlgy prgresses, mankind will always be unique in the field f art.
