Each time I walked int class, Mia wuld quickly realize her mistake, flash an aplgetic smile, and say, “Oh, Alex! Srry, srry!” while hurriedly clearing my space. She wuld then give a nd and ask, “Ready fr class, yeah?”
Initially, I fund this rutine mildly annying. I thught t myself, “Why can’t she keep her things n her side? Desn’t she knw I sit here every day?” The last thing I wanted was t deal with a guy wh barely spke my language at eight in the mrning. Just get yur stuff ff my desk!
One particularly busy mrning, I arrived a few minutes late t class. As I std utside the classrm, finishing a quick phne call, I nticed thrugh the windw that my desk was, as usual, ccupied by Mia’s things. Hwever, befre I culd enter, anther student, als running late, walked int the rm and headed straight fr my seat.
I watched as Mia’s eyes fllwed the newcmer. Her smile faded instantly, and she sprang int actin. “N, n! Srry but this seat is fr Alex!” she said anxiusly in brken English, waving her hands cnstantly. The cnfused student hesitated, but Mia had already grabbed her clrful scarf frm the chair and begun clearing textbks in a hurry. Her cheeks went pink as she patted the newly emptied space, lking tward the drway where I std. “Alex’s place, and he is cming” she repeated firmly. I frze, phne still pressed t my ear, suddenly understanding why my crner always stayed vacant despite the crwded lectures.
