As the first girl in my family, I was brn in Venezuela, twelve mnths t the day befre ne f the biggest
earthquakes in the cuntry’s histry struck the capital city Caracas in 1967. I’ve always seen this as a sign f my
destiny.
Disasters have the ptential t set back a natin’s develpment fr years and even decades. Hwever, my
persnal experiences have taught me that the extent f damage ften depends n whether there is a culture f
preventin within the affected sciety. .
I recall a time when I was living in an apartment building when a mderate earthquake struck. My reactin,
after the immediate “drp, cver, hld n” reflexes (反射动作), was t hpe that the building wuld prve t be
structurally sund. As the shaking slwly stpped, I ran utside t wait fr pssible aftershcks. My fears,
第 4页/共 12页
thankfully, did nt happen. It had resisted the quake because it fllwed the cuntry’s building cdes.
Occasins like this shw the necessity f having updated building cdes that include lessns learned frm past
disasters. Had the building nt fllwed these updated cdes, I may nt have survived. This experience has nly
strengthened my belief in the value f preventin in mitigating the impact f disasters.
I have spent the past tw years wrking n the Built Envirnment in Latin America and the Caribbean Prject.
The prject has develped risk-infrmed plicies and engineering techniques in the six cuntries that were selected
fr their particularly high expsure t earthquakes. This prject fits perfectly with my prfessinal and persnal
gals, as it cmbines my passin and experience in risk reductin. Like the third little pig in the tale f Three Little
Pigs, wh puts resilience (韧性) abve cnvenience while building his huse frm bricks, I’m cmmitted t
building a framewrk f preventin and resilience, as I knw that early actin tday can prevent prblems
tmrrw.
4. What des the authr refer t as her destiny?
A. Rebuilding cities after disasters. B. Experiencing many earthquakes.
C. Ding wrk related t earthquakes. D. Updating building cdes in Venezuela.
5 Why did the earthquake mentined in paragraph 3 impress the authr?
A. She realized the danger f earthquakes. B. She felt she did nt respnd well enugh.
C. She was very lucky t escape with her life. D. She recgnized the imprtance f preventin.
6. What des the underlined wrd “mitigating” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Causing. B. Reducing. C. Ignring. D. Aviding.
7 What des the tale f Three Little Pigs imply?
A. Teamwrk matters in preventing disasters. B. Risk reductin wrk requires a lt f skills.
C. Damage caused by disasters can be avided. D. Building huses needs passin and experience.

Scrates, the renwned ancient Greek philspher, famusly stated, “The unexamined life is nt wrth living.”
This pwerful declaratin serves as a call t research deeper int ne’s wn thughts, thrugh which he believed
true wisdm and persnal grwth culd nly be achieved.
The Scratic Methd, named after Scrates himself, is a frm f cperative dialgue where ne persn asks a
series f pen-ended questins t guide anther persn i tward insight and understanding. Fr example, imagine a
teacher discussing ethics with students. Instead f explaining what is “right” r “wrng” the teacher might ask,
第 5页/共 12页
“What des it mean t act ethically?” and fllw up with questins like, “Why d we cnsider sme actins fair
and thers unfair?” Thrugh this questining, students are led t think mre critically and examine their wn values
and assumptin rather than just accepting predetermined answers.
The Scratic Methd is a pwerful tl fr self- examinatin. When yu ask yurself, fr instance, “Why d
yu believe this?” r “What evidence supprts yur thinking?”, yu are encuraged t lk inward, reflect n yur
reasning, and cnsider whether yur beliefs are truly yur wn r influenced by external. factrs. This prcess f
questining leads t self-reflectin, helping individuals better understand the underlying mtivatins behind their
thughts and actins.
Self- reflectin is like hitting the pause buttn n life, which gives yu a mment t step back and lk clsely
at yur wn thughts , feelings and experiences. An unexamined life, hwever, is ne where peple g thrugh the
mtins withut ever questining the underlying beliefs, values, r mtivatins that drive their actins. Living an
unexamined life is similar t casting n autmatic pilt, where ne simply accepts scietal standards withut
critically evaluating them. In this kind f life, yu’re swept alng by sciety’s expectatins, barely aware f yur
wn desires, as if yu’re living in smene else’s script withut ever writing yur wn.
8. What des Scrates’ statement mainly cnvey in paragraph 1?
A. Philsphy helps peple achieve self- awareness.
B. Persnal grwth and wisdm require self reflectin.
C. Wisdm cmes frm careful examinatin f the wrld.
D. True wisdm can nly be fund thrugh external apprval.
9. What is the main prcess f the Scratic Methd?
A. Using a fixed set f questins t start discussins.
B. Engaging in dialgue t find answers t certain issues.
C. Presenting arguments t challenge previus assumptins.
D. Asking thughtful questins t encurage self-discvery.
10. Hw is the imprtance f self-reflectin presented in the last paragraph?
A. By making cmparisns. B. By using lgical questining.
C. Thrugh cncrete examples. D. Thrugh well-knwn statements.
11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Applying Greek philsphical principles in life.
B. Learning critical thinking thrugh histrical texts.

C. Explring yurself thrugh thughtful questining.
D. Understanding ethics and mrality thrugh dialgue.

Snar (声呐) allws fr clearer visual imaging underwater cmpared with the cnventinal signal prcessing
methd f visualizing sund eches. Underwater imaging snar is an essential technlgy fr cean explratin.
Snar inspired by marine mammals such as dlphins is an emerging develpment in this field.
Scientists frm the Natinal University f Singapre bserved that dlphins were able t acustically (听觉上)
scan bjects underwater and pick matching bjects visually. This demnstrated that a dlphin’s sund eches
emitted ff an bject cntained infrmatin abut the bject’s shape. They then recrded dlphin eches emitted
when scanning an bject underwater.
Based n their bservatins, the team built a snar system that cpied a dlphin’s snar. The snar, which is
abut 25 cm in width and arund the size f a dlphin’s head, is designed t emit sharp click sunds similar t a
dlphin’s echlcatin (回声定位). Three transmitters are used t send sunds frm different directins. The
researchers then prcessed the sunds frm bth dlphins and their snar t visualize what the eches revealed
abut the bject’s shape. T make the mst f this new hardware, the team develped a nvel prcessing algrithm
(算法) that allwed the snar t imprve the visualizatin f the eches. Based n the hypthesis that dlphins use
prir infrmatin t prcess their eches, the researchers included prir infrmatin in their algrithm.
The effectiveness f the sftware was demnstrated when it was able t visualize infrmatin frm a dlphin’s
snar eches when scanning an bject, as well as snar signals prduced by their snar. A cnventinal apprach t
prcessing bth snar eches resulted in nisy images. Hwever, the nvel prcessing apprach gave better
reslutin and, therefre , sharper images. The sftware was als able t generate visualizatin with a mere three
clicks frm the snar, allwing it t be peratinally fast.
The new snar prcessing methd culd have ptential benefits in underwater cmmercial r military snar.
Fr example, it culd be used t scan the seabed t search fr features that can be used t aid navigatin. The snar’
s cmpactness (小巧) als makes it suitable fr installatin n underwater rbts fr cean explratin.
12. What did the scientists bserve abut dlphins?
A. They culd send visual signals t cmmunicate.
B. They culd identify underwater bjects by sight.
C. They culd change the shape f bjects thrugh sund.
D. They culd recgnize the shape f an bject based n their eches.
第 7页/共 12页
13. What d we knw abut the snar built by the researchers?
A. It has a length f 25 cm.
B. It explits military technlgy.
C. It cntains multiple transmitters fr sund emissin.
D. It translates the sund f dlphins int visual signals.
14. Hw did the new prcessing methd differ frm the cnventinal apprach?
A. It generated mre nisy images.
B. It prduced images with better clarity.
C. It did nt rely n advanced technlgy.
D. It required less human interventin fr peratin.
15. What is the main fcus f the text?
A. The ptential benefits f underwater imaging snar.
B. The intrductin f a dlphin-inspired snar technlgy.
C. The bservatin f dlphins’ acustical scanning abilities.
D. The cmparisn between cnventinal and new snar methds.
