I had always prided myself n being strng and adaptive, smene wh culd handle anything thrwn my way.
As a dctr and skin researcher, I was always busy: My days were filled with the demands f the clinic and the lab,
my evenings spent digging int the latest studies.
I was als living with a chrnic (慢性的) illness. When I first received my diagnsis (诊断), I brushed it ff.
“I can handle this,” I tld myself. “I’ve handled wrse.” And fr several years I pushed thrugh the pain and
exhaustin, cnvinced that slwing dwn in my wrk wuld mean falling behind.
      第 4页/共 11页
But the chest pain, it turned ut, wasn’t nly a symptm f my illness: I was als pregnant. I was verjyed
when I fund ut. But hw culd I cntinue t wrk at this pace while als nurturing (孕育) a new life? I had t
make a chice: Cntinue t push myself t the physical bundaries, r take a step back.
In India, where I wrk, wmen dctrs nrmally take just 6 weeks f leave, right after delivery. It’s unheard f
t take a year-lng break, r stp wrking a few mnths int pregnancy, as I did. One clleague remarked that
taking s much leave isn’t a great lk fr smene lnging fr leadership. Anther tld me, “Wmen have been
wrking thrugh pregnancies fr generatins. Why shuld yu be any different?”
In the early days f my break I ften lay awake at night, wndering whether my decisin wuld indeed pse
a threat t my career. But as time went n, I began t see my time ff nt as a failure, but as a necessary pause. I
realized it didn’t mean I was any less capable r ambitius, but that I valued my health and well-being enugh. And
it meant that when I returned t wrk, I was able t give my best-nt just smene wh had been running n empty.

The American Ornithlgical Sciety (AOS) has annunced that it will rename all birds that are named after
peple. The change is being made t ensure that names f peple wh discriminated (歧视) are nt attached t the
      birds.
The AOS, based in Chicag, Illinis, has maintained a list f English-language names fr birds in Nrth
America since 1886. In 2020, an applicatin demanding a change t bird names that were cnsidered harmful was
      第 5页/共 11页
signed by 182 peple and submitted t the AOS. A cmmittee determined that renaming birds n an individual
basis was nt feasible but that all birds named after peple shuld get new names.
“There is pwer in a name,” said Clleen Handel, the president f AOS. “Sme English bird names have
assciatins with the past that cntinue t be discriminatry.” The new names, she said, wuld fcus n “the unique
features and beauty f the birds themselves”.
The AOS will begin cming up with new cmmn names fr the birds in 2024, first fcusing n 70 t 80
species in the US and Canada. The scientific names f the species, written in Latin, will nt be changed. The names
f birds in Latin America will be cnsidered next. Ultimately, the AOS plans t change the names f 263 birds.
Sme birds have already gtten a new name. In 2020, the AOS renamed a sngbird that had been named after
a general in the US Civil War (1861-1865) wh had been part f the Cnfederacy, the grup f states that fught t
preserve slavery (奴隶制). The sngbird’s new name is the thick-billed lngspur (厚嘴籽雀).
Emily Williams, a bird researcher at Gergetwn University, tld the Assciated Press he was excited abut
the news. Christian Cper, a blackbird enthusiast, tld The New Yrk Times, “There’s n reasn t have a persn’s
name attached t a bird because it desn’t tell yu anything abut the bird.”
      8. Why did the AOS decide t rename birds?
      A. T simplify the naming rules fr birds. B. T fllw the new naming regulatins.
      C. T increase the diversity f bird names. D. T ensure they aren’t named after peple.

      11. What is Christian Cper’s attitude tward the AOS’s plan?
      A. Oppsed. B. Dubtful. C. Supprtive. D. Uncncerned.
      D
Redundancy (冗余) is widely seen as a writing errr. “Omit (删除) needless wrds” is perhaps the least
redundant statement f this view, made famus by The Elements f Style. In it, E.B. White wed the qute t his
university English teacher, William Strunk. In the classrm, Strunk “mitted s many needless wrds” that he was
ften “left with nthing mre t say, yet with time t fill”. S Strunk said everything three times. Did he really need
t repeat himself three times? If he had already said everything that was required, he culd have let the class ut
      第 6页/共 11页
early. That he did s suggests there may be mre value in redundancy than meets the eye.
Redundancy can be frequently bserved n trains and planes. These are nisy and distracting places where
“Please take yur things” may nt be heard by all passengers. Redundancy makes a signal rbust. Fr instance,
spacecraft sending digital messages t Earth include redundancies in the signal that allw engineers back hme t
      recnstruct the degraded transmissins (传输).
Anther pssible use f redundancy is simply t make listening r reading less effrtful. If every pssible
wrd that can be remved is remved, s that every remaining ne is abslutely crucial, listening and reading
becme stressful. Yu cannt let yur mind wander fr even a mment. Such article is almst t thick with
infrmatin; even a shrt passage f this kind wuld be demanding t read.
The advice t keep it brief is still a gd idea. Blaise Pascal, a French authr f the 17th century, nce
aplgised fr a lng letter by saying: “I have nt had time t make it shrter.” Keeping things tight can be hard
wrk fr the writer, but it saves time fr the reader, at least up t a pint. Make yur article as shrt as necessary t
keep yur reader reading — but nt mre.
      12. Why des the authr mentin the example f William Strunk?
      A. T illustrate a cmmn writing errr. B. T questin the lgic f repetitive wrds.
      C. T intrduce an influential English qute. D. T justify the existence f redundant speech.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “rbust” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
      A. Reliable. B. Cncrete. C. Cmprehensive. D. Vivid.
      14. In what way is redundancy useful?
      A. It remves the stress f reading. B. It saves readers frm mind-wandering.
      C. It facilitates the readability f passages. D. It packs articles with crucial infrmatin.
      15. What’s the authr’s suggestin regarding being brief?
      A. Write t the pint. B. Maintain a balance.
      C. Cnsider the reader. D. Aplgize if necessary.
