The American Ornithlgical Sciety (AOS) has annunced that it will rename all birds that are named after
peple. The change is being made t ensure that names f peple wh discriminated (歧视) are nt attached t the
birds.
The AOS, based in Chicag, Illinis, has maintained a list f English-language names fr birds in Nrth
America since 1886. In 2020, an applicatin demanding a change t bird names that were cnsidered harmful was

basis was nt feasible but that all birds named after peple shuld get new names.
“There is pwer in a name,” said Clleen Handel, the president f AOS. “Sme English bird names have

features and beauty f the birds themselves”.
The AOS will begin cming up with new cmmn names fr the birds in 2024, first fcusing n 70 t 80
species in the US and Canada. The scientific names f the species, written in Latin, will nt be changed. The names
f birds in Latin America will be cnsidered next. Ultimately, the AOS plans t change the names f 263 birds.
Sme birds have already gtten a new name. In 2020, the AOS renamed a sngbird that had been named after
a general in the US Civil War (1861-1865) wh had been part f the Cnfederacy, the grup f states that fught t
preserve slavery (奴隶制). The sngbird’s new name is the thick-billed lngspur (厚嘴籽雀).
Emily Williams, a bird researcher at Gergetwn University, tld the Assciated Press he was excited abut
