Dn’t try t be funny. Take a walk dwn any majr beach and it likely wn’t be lng befre yu cme upn sme trash. Cuntless types f plastics litter the wrld’s beaches, eventually making their way int the cean where they break dwn ver the curse f decades r even centuries. Ocean Cnservancy estimates that vlunteers frm 97 cuntries and regins identified and remved arund 4,000tns f plastic trash frm beaches wrldwide in 2023. Fr the mst part, sptting the trash still depends n the naked eye and a great deal f walking. But that culd ne day change thanks t a new satellite imaging technique develped by researchers frm RMIT University in Australia.
The team develped a new tl that highlights unique spectra (光谱的) features in plastics. Armed with that knwledge, the researchers were then able t accurately identify plastic items n beaches and distinguish them frm sand, water, and plants. The researchers, whse wrk will be published in an upcming issue f the jurnal Marine Pllutin Bulletin, are hpeful that castal cleanup rganizatins can use this new tl t expedite plastic remval effrts n beaches.
“This is incredibly exciting, as up t nw we have nt had a tl fr detecting plastics in castal envirnments frm space,” said study c-authr Maria St-Bereciv.
Satellite imagery has, fr years, been used t help scientists identify plastics flating in the cean, but it’s far less effective at sptting plastics n beaches. Castal plastics ften blend (混合) in with r are partially buried by sand. And castal plastic trash can als have serius negative effects n lcal wildlife. “Plastics can be mistaken fr fd, and animals can be trapped by plastics,” study lead authr Jenna Guffgg said.
Thse harmful effects aren’t limited t life n beaches. If plastics aren’t remved, they can ften end up ging int the cean where they will slwly break dwn int smaller pieces. Thse tiny plastic pieces are then eaten by fish and wrk their way up the fd chain. Sme researchers believe this cycle may even lead t increased cases f micrplastics detected in humans. The full extent f the effects f micrplastics n human health still isn’t fully knwn.
