Sintra is 25km t the west f Lisbn. We strngly discurage driving t Sintra, as the narrw hill rads are nt designed fr the heavy turist traffic and there is virtually n car parking nce there. There are bus services t Sintra, but the jurney times are lnger than by train and the lcatins f the bus statins are nt as cnvenient as the train statins.
The trains t Sintra are perated by the natinal train cmpany f Prtugal. There are tw rail rutes between Lisbn t Sintra, bth equally useful fr turists. These services are:
1) Rssi Statin t Sintra
2) Oriente statin t Sintra, via Areeir, Entrecamps, and Sete Ris statins
The Rssi service is the ne typically used by mst visitrs, as it departs frm the histric centre f Lisbn. The train departing frm Oriente statin is generally used by thse visitrs travelling nward t Sintra, as this rute is clser t the airprt, the main bus statins and train statin.
As the Lisbn t Sintra railway is an urban rute, tickets and seats cannt be pre-bked, but there is n real need as there is usually plenty f free seats. Due t the ppularity f Sintra there can be lng queues at Rssi statin fr tickets, ur advice is always start a trip t Sintra as early in the day as pssible.

SpGmi was invented in Japan in 2008. The name is a cmbinatin f “sprt” and the Japanese wrd fr rubbish, “gmi”. During the game, yu’re given an area f rughly 1.5 sq km, and have t cllect as much litter as pssible within an hur r s, with sme items awarded mre pints than thers.
I participated in the UK SpGmi cmpetitin held in Lndn this August. My teammates were my husband Alex and his brther Jnny. We wn by 33 pints.
We were then heading fr the Wrld Cup in Tky. The night we arrived, we walked arund the cmpetitin area, which was in the busy cmmercial Shibuya district. We thught abut the prfile f peple wh drp litter: prbably typically yunger peple r peple wh were drinking. That helped us narrw dwn where t g. S we made nte f areas with lts f bars.
With 21 natins participating, the cmpetitin f the Wrld Cup was intense. At ne pint, the members f anther team, came ver t us and tried t pick rubbish ut f ur bag. After the first half, Japan came tp, we were secnd and the Brazilian team was third. My muscles were aching and I felt cmpletely wiped ut frm the heat f Tky n a sunny day. I didn’t have much mre energy, and I remember Alex and Jnny saying the same, but we had this feeling f being n the edge f smething amazing. We had t just keep pushing. We pulled ahead in the secnd half and ended up cming first, with 57 kg f rubbish cllected.
Befre SpGmi, I wuldn’t have imagined myself as smene wh picked litter up ff the street. At the early stage f ur training, we were s bad at finding litter. Then, just after the Lndn cmpetitin, n the way hme, we saw s much. We were just much aware f it. Once yu’re drawn int SpGmi, yur attitude twards litter and hw yu cntribute cmpletely changes.

B. They studied the rules f the sprt.
C. They went t bars t relax their minds.
D. They made an explratin f the playing area.
6. Hw might the authr describe the Wrld Cup?

Why des ne plus ne equal tw? One pssible answer is “It just des!” Math can seem like a wrld f rules yu just have t fllw, which makes it seem rigid and bring. Whereas my lve f math is smewhat driven by my lve f breaking rules, r at least pushing against them.
Smetimes, ne plus ne can equal mre than tw. If yu and yur friend bth have enugh cash t buy ne cup f cffee, then tgether yu still might have enugh t buy three. If ne pair f tennis players gets tgether with anther pair fr an afternn f tennis, there ends up being mre than tw pairs f tennis players because they culd play in all srts f different cmbinatins.
Smetimes, ne plus ne is just ne, like if yu put a pile f sand n tp f anther pile f sand, then yu just get n c pile f sand. Or, as an art student f mine pinted ut, if yu mix ne clr with ne clr, yu get ne clr.
Actually, Math isn't really abut getting the right answer. It's abut building gd justificatins. I ften hear parents cmplaining if children can d smething ne way, why d they need t knw all these ther ways?
Imagine we were designing a jungle gym fr children. We'd want t test it in every pssible way t make sure it's safe. We'd want t jump n it, swing frm it, fall frm it and try t pull it ut f the grund, rather than simply trusting that we built it well. The slidity f math cmes frm nt wanting t trust things, but wanting t jump and swing and knw that ur framewrk will hld up. One f the reasns the framewrk is s strng is preciscly because we questin it s deeply.
I hpe that we will start seeing mathematics as a place t pse questins and explre answers, rather than a place where the answers are fixed and we' re suppsed t knw them. And I hpe we will place mre emphasis n thse wh are curius, and wh fllw their curisity n a jurney that may be slw and withut a clear destinatin, a quiet walk thrugh the cuntryside rather than a race t the finish.
8. In what way des the authr apprach mathematical rules?
A. Thinking utside the bx.B. Fllwing them strictly.
C. Finding them entertaining.D. Recgnizing their imprtance.
9. In the cntext f tennis players, what des the authr mean by “ne plus ne can be mre than tw”?
A. Tennis players can teach each ther new techniques.
B. Mre tennis equipment is needed fr each additinal player.
C. The enjyment f tennis dubles when mre players are invlved.
D. Tw pairs f tennis players can frm multiple dubles cmbinatins.
10. What is the purpse f mentining the jungle gym in paragraph 5?
A. T simplify the cmplexity f mathematical learning.
B. T illustrate the value f diverse mathematical appraches.
C. T demnstrate that math is nly useful in practical applicatins.
D. T argue that a single methd is sufficient fr understanding math.
11. What des the authr hpe fr the future f mathematics?
A. It will becme mre rule-based.B. It will fcus n getting the crrect answer.
C. It will prmte the jy f discvery.D. It will emphasize speed and efficiency.
D
Orangutan (红毛猩猩) calls have a cmplex structure that was thught t be unique t human language. Shrt sequences are nested inside lnger sequences, much like the way we make lng sentences frm shrter phrases.
Adrian Lameira at the University f Warwick in Cventry, UK, and his clleagues studied wild Brnean rangutans in Indnesian Brne. They recrded lng calls. “They are advertisement calls,” says Lameira. “They take the frm f ‘ ’.”
Lameira wanted t understand the rhythm (节奏) f the calls. But this prved kntty. “We were having difficulties,” he says, because the temp varied dramatically during each lng call: Fast bursts f shrt “” sunds were mixed with lnger, slwer “” sunds, he says.
Clser analysis revealed that the middle f each lng call had a regular temp f lng “” sunds, but the beginning and end had bursts f shrter “” sunds. Crucially, the shrter sequences were nested inside lnger sequences. This is similar t a feature f human language called recursin (递归) . We can create cmplex sentences by nesting an extra phrase in the middle f a sentence, as with: “The dg, which ran after the cat, was barking”. The rangutans’ lng calls had a similar recursive structure.
Previusly, researchers have failed t find evidence f recursin in the calls f apes, mnkeys r ther animals. The clsest anyne has cme is training animals t recgnise recursin — but this isn’t the same as bserving wild animals actually making recursive calls. Recursin seemed unique t humans.
Lameira says previus searches fr recursive calls were unsuccessful because they asked t much f their animal subjects. Humans use recursin t create new and cmplex meanings, and researchers had lked fr animals that d the same. But they seem nt t. His team’s analysis didn’t lk at the meaning f the calls at all. “It was a pure structural analysis,” he says.
Lameira emphasizes that there is n evidence the rangutans are encding cmplex meanings in their lng calls. It may be that the recursive cmplexity is simply a frm f shwing ff that is similar t birdsng, which can be incredibly cmplicated.
12. What des the underlined wrd “kntty” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Funny.B. Wrthy.C. Crazy.D. Tricky.
13. Hw did the authr explain the recursive structure?
A. By giving examples.B. By analyzing samples.
C. By cnducting analysis.D. By telling stries.
14. Why did the previus searches fr recursive calls fail?
A. The researchers didn’t make enugh analyses.
B. The researchers chse the wrng animal subjects.
C. The researchers neglected the calls f the animals.
D. The researchers didn’t find a prper animal subject.
15. What is the best title f the passage?
A. The Secret f Orangutan’s LanguageB. Researchers Devte t Prtect Orangutan
C. Orangutan Can Cmmunicate Like HumanD. Orangutan Calls Have a Recursive Structure

D 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第三段中划线词上文“Lameira wanted t understand the rhythm (节奏) f the calls(Lameira想要了解这些叫声的节奏)”以及下文 ““We were having difficulties,” he says, because the temp varied dramatically during each lng call: Fast bursts f shrt “” sunds were mixed with lnger, slwer “” sunds, he says.(‘我们遇到了困难,’他说,因为每次长呼叫的节奏变化很大:快速爆发的短‘’声音与长而慢的‘’声音混合在一起。)”
根据第四段中“We can create cmplex sentences by nesting an extra phrase in the middle f a sentence, as with: “The dg, which ran after the cat, was barking”. The rangutans’ lng calls had a similar recursive structure.( 我们可以通过在句子中间嵌套一个额外的短语来创建复杂的句子,比如:‘狗在追猫,狗在叫’。猩猩的长叫声也有类似的递归结构。)”可知,此处以举例的方式来说明递归结构,然后指出红毛猩猩的长叫唤也有类似的递归结构。由此可知,作者是通过举例子来解释递归结构。故选A。
根据第六段中“Lameira says previus searches fr recursive calls were unsuccessful because they asked t much f their animal subjects. Humans use recursin t create new and cmplex meanings, and researchers had lked fr animals that d the same. But they seem nt t. His team’s analysis didn’t lk at the meaning f the calls at all. “It was a pure structural analysis,” he says.(Lameira说,之前对递归呼叫的研究都没有成功,因为他们对动物实验对象要求太多。
通读全文,结合第一段“Orangutan (红毛猩猩) calls have a cmplex structure that was thught t be unique t human language. Shrt sequences are nested inside lnger sequences, much like the way we make lng sentences frm shrter phrases.( 红毛猩猩的叫声具有复杂的结构,这种结构曾被认为是人类语言所独有的。短序列嵌套在长序列中,就像我们用短语组成长句的方式一样。)”以及第四段“Clser analysis revealed that the middle f each lng call had a regular temp f lng “” sunds, but the beginning and end had bursts f shrter “” sunds. Crucially, the shrter sequences were nested inside lnger sequences. This is similar t a feature f human language called recursin (递归).( 更细致的分析发现,每个长叫声的中间部分都有规律的长‘’声的节奏,但开头和结尾都有一连串较短的‘’声。关键的是,短序列嵌套在长序列中。这与人类语言中的一个特征相似,称为递归。)”可知,文章主要介绍了红毛猩猩的叫声具有递归结构。由此可知,D选项“Orangutan Calls Have a Recursive Structure(红毛猩猩的叫声具有递归结构)”最符合文章标题。故选D。
