Beauty and the Beast is practically “a tale as ld as time.” S are a few ther flktales (民间故事), new research shws. “These stries are far lder than the first literary evidence fr them,” says anthrplgist Jamie Tehrani. When linguists study a language’s evlutin, they trace grammatical and phnetical (语音的) structure thrugh time. “What we were interested in ding is seeing if yu culd d that fr ther elements f culture,” Tehrani says.
Tehrani’s research grup studied 275 magic-based stries frm a database f mre than 2,000 types f flktales. Magic stries include beings r bjects with supernatural pwers and are the largest flktale grup. Statistical analyses f the relatinship between the flktales and language, as well as between the flktales and hw they may have been shared by neighbring peples, left the team with 76 stries that they thught were strng candidates fr accurately estimating flktale age.
“These methds allw us t trace much further back than the physical evidence wuld allw us t d,” says Tehrani, wh has als studied the rigins f Little Red Riding Hd. Fur tales had a high prbability f being assciated with the structure f the Prt-Ind-Eurpean language — an ancient cmmn language that dates t arund 6,000 years ag. Hwever, The Smith and the Devil is the nly ne they feel abslutely cnfident as being a Prt-Ind-Eurpean tale. Since the tale is assciated with Prt-Ind-Eurpean language and includes a character wh typically wrks with metal, the researchers park its rigins arund 6,000 years ag, in the Brnze Age. The team als fund that early versins f Rumpelstiltskin and Beauty and the Beast first appear with the emergence f mdern Ind-Eurpean language subfamilies. The language-stry pairings suggest that the tales riginated between 3,000 and 4,000 years ag.
Tehrani says the researchers treated the stries like genetic infrmatin, passed frm generatin t generatin. “We dn’t invent culture anew every generatin,” Tehrani says. “Instead, we inherit a lt f ur culture.”
28.What did the new research want t find?
A.The spreading ways f flktales.B.The structure f languages.
C.The rigin time f flktales.D.The evlutin f languages.
29.Hw did Tehrani’s grup estimate the age f the flktales?

B.By tracing grammar develpment f languages.
C.By examine flktale-magic relatinships.
D.By studying genetic changes f ancient peple.
30.Which flktale is believed t be the ldest accrding t the research?
A.Beauty and the Beast.B.Little Red Riding Hd.
C.The Smith and the Devil.D.Rumpelstiltskin.
31.What is clse in meaning with the underlined wrd “inherit” in the last paragraph?
A.Create.B.Receive.C.Frget.D.Change.
