      The rbtics club was taking part in the Natinal Rbtics Cmpetitin at the Children’s Science Centre. Charlie quickly put their rbt int a bx. Paul tk the bx, and the three f them gt n the bus.

      A new study suggests that rsters can recgnize (认出) themselves in a mirrr.
      The list f animals wh can recgnize themselves in a mirrr isn’t lng. The skill has mainly been fund in animals with large brains, like dlphins, chimpanzees and elephants. Until recently, amng all birds, nly rsters had shwn this special skill.
      Scientists at the University f Bnn in Germany recently ran the “mark test” n rsters. During the test, they put a pink triangle n the chest f a rster and it was allwed t lk in a mirrr. If the rster seems t pay attentin t the mark, scientists believe the rster has recgnized itself. Hwever, when the rster lked in a mirrr, they didn’t seem t ntice the mark. The scientists needed a new way t test whether the rsters culd recgnize themselves.
      When there’s danger — like a hawk (鹰) flying abve — rsters make lud calls t warn nearby chickens. But rsters nly make the cries if ther chickens can hear them. If they’re alne, they remain quiet s the hawk wn’t see them. The scientists realized that they culd use the shadw (影子) f a hawk t test whether r nt the rsters thught they were alne — even when they culd see “anther” chicken in a mirrr.
      First, the scientists let the rsters spend time getting used t being in a clsed space and having a mirrr arund. Then, they ran several tests by making a hawk shadw appear abve a rster and watching hw it reacted (回应). When there was n mirrr, the rsters reacted as usual. But when there was a mirrr arund the clsed space, the rster wasn’t fled int thinking there was anther rster. It remained silent althugh it saw the hawk shadw. It did this even if there was a rster hidden behind the mirrr.
      The scientists say the results shw that the rsters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirrr, and nt ther rsters. The scientists believe their finding will encurage ther scientists t lk fr better ways f testing self - recgnitin in animals.
