While turing Mississippi in an ld car, Jhn Ingall and his wife, Jane, discvered a plant that wuld change their lives — the hardshell gurd (葫芦).
At first, it was mere curisity, but sn, they saw gurds everywhere — carved, hanging, glwing as lanterns. Drawn t them, Jhn, a lifelng farmer, decided t try grwing them.
Back in Warwickshire, he planted a few seeds amng his tmates. The plants grew quickly, reaching six feet tall. Weeks later, he fund large gurds hidden amng the leaves. Since then, he has harvested abut a hundred gurds each year, each with a different shape — sme lng and thin, thers rund. Unexpectedly, Ingall had been trying t retire when he first discvered gurds. After managing tw farms — ne frm Jane’s family and anther fr grwing crps — he had always planned t stp wrking at 65. Unlike many farmers wh never retire, he wanted t find a new interest.
Farming had been his childhd dream, despite his parents’ bjectins. They, shaped by the Great Depressin, had hped he wuld take an ffice jb. Yet, his lve fr rural life never faded. Over 45 years, he mved frm dairy t beef, then rganic farming, and finally letting the land return t nature. Change, he welcmed — but nly in a cntrlled manner.
Yet gurds pushed him beynd his cmfrt zne. “Nt until I started wrking n them did I realize — I am an artist!” said Jhn. Nw, as ne f the few gurd artists in the U. K., he creates lanterns with clred glass, astnishing visitrs.
As well as selling gurds thrugh his persnal studi, Jhn markets them at art fairs, dnating prfits t fight the climate crisis. “It’s very satisfying. Gurds are an entirely sustainable material fr many types f art, and every gurd is unique,” he says. “I enjy grwing them. It’s amazing what yu can d with gurds.”
      4. What mtivated Jhn t plant gurds?
      A. His wife’s encuragement.B. His desire fr a new interest.

Develping a new drug is a lng, expensive, and high-risk prcess. On average, the prcess takes ver ten years and csts mre than $ 2 billin befre a drug receives apprval. Even then, success is far frm guaranteed — each year, the U. S. Fd and Drug Administratin(FDA)apprves nly abut 53 new drugs. Given these high risks, pharmaceutical (制药) cmpanies are eager fr breakthrughs. Lng regarded as a game-changer, artificial intelligence(AI) is nw beginning t deliver n its prmise in drug discvery.
Befre a drug reaches the market, it must underg three critical phases f clinical (临床的) trials. Phase ne primarily assesses safety, testing a small grup f healthy vlunteers t identify ptential side effects. Phase tw, ften the mst vital stage, evaluates bth safety and effectiveness in a larger grup f patients with the target disease. Only if successful des the drug prceed t phase three, where it is tested n an even brader ppulatin t cnfirm its benefits and mnitr fr rare side effects.
AI is already prving its value in this prcess. Insilic, an AI-driven bitech startup, has demnstrated its ptential by identifying a drug target and designing a mlecule (分子) suitable fr human trials in just 18 mnths — at a cst f nly $ 2.7 millin, a fractin f traditinal csts. Encuragingly, AI-designed drugs are nw advancing thrugh clinical trials. In 2025, key results frm phase-tw trials will be revealed fr several AI-develped treatments. Accrding t Christph Meier f BCG, AI culd ptentially duble research and develpment prductivity. If successful, fur r five AI-designed drugs culd advance t phase-three trials this year — a milestne fr the industry.
Thugh AI has yet t shrten clinical trial timelines, its impact is already visible in cst reductin and smarter decisin-making. Even a mdest 20% decrease in failures at the phase-tw stage culd save nearly $ 450 millin per drug, accrding t research frm Cambridge University’s Andreas Bender. With AI-driven innvatin speeding up, the future f drug develpment lks mre prmising than ever.
      8. Why d pharmaceutical cmpanies turn t AI?
      A. T imprve the efficiency.B. T guarantee the success.
      C. T mnitr the industry.D. T deliver the prmise.
      9. What is the feature f phase tw?
      A. Critical.B. Stable.C. Cstly.D. Effective.
      10. What des the underlined wrd “fractin” in paragraph three mean?
      A. Majrity.B. Set.C. Slice.D. Matter.
      11. What can AI cntribute t drug develpment accrding t the text?
      A. Cut dwn its csts.B. Shrten its timeline.
      C. Duble its prductivity.D. Reduce its failures sharply.

China’s “artificial sun” has made histry again! On January 20, scientists managed t keep an extremely ht gas, called plasma, burning inside a reactr (反应堆) fr 1,066 secnds — mre than twice as lng as their previus recrd f 403 secnds. This achievement brings us clser t a future with nearly endless clean energy.
Like the real sun, nuclear fusin (核聚变) creates energy by cmbining small atms (原子) int larger nes under extreme heat and pressure. Hwever, because the sun’s gravity naturally helps this prcess, scientists n Earth have t burn up gases t temperatures much htter than the sun’s cre t make fusin happen. If fully develped, this technlgy culd prvide limitless energy, prducing n pllutin and almst n harmful waste. Yet, after mre than 70 years f research, fusin pwer is still decades away frm being used in ur daily lives.
The Experimental Advanced Supercnducting Tkamak(EAST), China’s fusin reactr, wrks by trapping plasma inside a ring-shaped machine and hlding it in place with pwerful magnets (磁铁). T create useful energy, reactrs like EAST must keep the plasma burning fr thusands f secnds — smething that n ne has achieved yet. A key gal f fusin energy is t reach “self-sustaining pwer”, where the reactin creates enugh energy t keep itself ging. S far, n reactr in the wrld has reached this stage, but China’s new recrd brings us ne step clser.
Right nw, all fusin experiments use mre energy than they prduce. In 2022, scientists in the U. S. briefly created fusin energy using a different methd, but the machine still cnsumed mre pwer than it generated. T imprve EAST’s perfrmance, Chinese researchers dubled the pwer f its heating system, allwing the reactr t set this impressive new recrd.
China is als part f a glbal fusin prject called ITER, which includes cuntries like the U. S., U. K., Japan, Suth Krea, and Russia. While ITER wn’t prduce electricity, it will help scientists build better fusin pwer plants in the future — a future that culd change hw the wrld gets its energy.
      12. Hw d scientists make fusin a reality?
      A. By frming huge ht gases.B. By relying n the sun’s gravity.
      C. By heating gases t extreme temperatures.D. By creating plasma under mild cnditins.
      13. What is paragraph three mainly abut?
      A. The wrking principle f EAST.B. The advantages f fusin energy.
      C. The challenges f burning plasma.D. The cperatin f fusin researchers.
      14. What can be learnt abut the fusin energy?
      A. It is clse t being achieved.
      B. It requires mre pwer t generate.
      C. Its aim is t be transfrmed int electricity.
      D. Its prductin methd is mre advanced in America.
      15. Which wuld be the best title fr this text?
      A. China Achieves Fusin EnergyB. Nuclear Fusin Meets Challenges
      C. EAST Paves the Way fr Clean PwerD. ITER Wrks Tward the Future f Energy
