Fr Wilsn Bentley, the late-nineteenth-and-early-twentieth-century micrphtgraphic innvatr and genuine snwflake enthusiast, cnsidering the dazzling array f kaleidscpic (万花筒般的) snw-crystal frmatins was a recreatin that never lst its lustre.
Bentley was brn in 1865 and raised n a farm in Jerich, Vermnt. His father and brther spent their days tending t the prperty. Bentley was expected t pitch in, t, but he was mre interested in studying the land than in wrking it. He first tried his hand at drawing the snwflakes, but fund that they were t elabrate fr him t reprduce with adequate precisin. Eventually, he gt the idea t capture them phtgraphically instead, but he ran int a significant hurdle: the camera that he needed wuld cst a princely sum. After tw years f waiting, he persuaded his parents t use part f an inheritance they’d received after the death f Bentley’s grandmther t gift him a view camera fr his seventeenth birthday.
When the standard camera lens culd nt fcus as clsely as Bentley needed, he devised an ingenius slutin, jury-rigging his belved micrscpe t the camera’s accrdin-like bellws. His ther tls, he later nted in a piece he wrte fr the magazine Ppular Mechanics, were humble: “a pair f thick mittens, micrscpe slides, a sharp pinted wd splint, a feather, and a turkey wing r similar duster.”
Recently, the physicist Kenneth Libbrecht has been refining the art f the lab-grwn snwflake, and has managed t expand Nakaya’s typlgy t thirty-five categries. Libbrecht’s snwflake phtgraphs, als inspired by Bentley, were cmpiled in his bk “Field Guide t Snwflakes,” and have been featured n stamps issued by the United States Pstal Service. In the bk, Libbrecht writes that yu dn’t have t be a scientist r a phtgrapher t enjy studying snwflakes. At the very least, “pulling ut yur magnifier (放大镜) is definitely a cnversatin starter.”
      4. Why did Bentley abandn the methd f hand-drawing snwflakes?
      A. He lacked prper drawing materials.
      B. An elabrate camera was unaffrdable.
      C. He failed t persuade his parents tw years ag.
D Snwflakes are t cmplex t reprduce accurately.
      5. Which f the fllwing can best describe Wilsn Bentley?
      A. Curius and persistent.B. Impatient and reckless.
      C. Wealthy and dedicated.D. Humble and creative.
      6. What des Kenneth Libbrecht imply?
      A. Using a magnifier is essential fr prfessinal scientific research.
      B. Studying snwflakes requires histrical knwledge f Bentley’s wrk.
      C. Observing snwflakes is fr anyne as lng as yu take actin.
      D. Magnifiers are utdated tls cmpared t mdern lab equipment.
7 Which can be the best title fr this text?
      A. Wilsn Bentley: Wh Updated the Magnifier
      B. A Snwflake Obsessive: Wh Captured the Unique Beauty f Snwflakes

We knw that being physically and emtinally present fr children is critical. New research frm a team f behaviral scientists in the UK suggests that there is a direct, significant relatinship between the way parents relate t fd and their children’s fd practices.
In the studies, parents were assessed and srted int fur different types f fd relatinships: typical eating, greedy eating, emtinal eating, and avidant eating. The parents then prvided infrmatin abut the eating behavirs f their 3-t-6-year-ld children.
Abut 40% f the parents were typical eaters, withut any severe r intense behavirs related t fd. The greedy eaters—abut 37%—were parents whse decisin t eat was mre heavily guided by cues frm the envirnment and their emtins, rather than their wn hunger cues. They scred lw n satiety respnsiveness(饱腹感反应)and slwness in eating measures. Almst 16% f the parents were emtinal eaters, wh ate in respnse t emtin mre than any ther cues and were mre likely t engage in emtinal vereating. The remaining parents(6%)were avidant eaters wh did nt enjy fd as much as the thers and were picky abut fd selectins.
Children tended t have a similar fd relatinship as their parents. The similarity in fd relatinship style was especially evident in thse wh had greedy r avidant eating behavirs. Parents with an greedy r emtinal style f fd relatinship tended t use fd fr emtinal regulatin mre than parents with typical eating behavirs, which crrelated with their children als having a greedy r emtinal fd relatinship. These parents were als less likely t create a healthy, psitive fd envirnment at hme. When the fd envirnment was nt healthy, children were mre likely t have avidant relatinships with fd. The findings frm these data analyses prvide insight int the tightly bund nature f parent and child fd relatinships, especially in regard t emtinal regulatin.
Thugh behavirs can be changed at any pint in life, it is arguably easier t mve tward adulthd with healthy fd behavirs that were established in childhd, rather than recnfigure thse habits as an adult. Given the majr influence f parental fd relatinships n children suggested by this research, perhaps mre cntinued wrk in this field can functin as a catalyst fr parents t establish healthier fd relatinships—first fr themselves, and then fr their children.
      8. Hw did researchers categrize these parents?
      A. By tracking lng-term dietary changes.B. Thrugh experiments n hunger cues.
      C. Via children’s feedback n family meals.D. By evaluating their eating behavirs.
      9. Which ne f the fllwing is mre likely t be a greedy eating parent?
      A. Jack, whse dietary decisin is ften affected by hunger cues.
      B. Mary, wh tends t vereat emtinally.
      C. Amy, wh is sensitive t the surrundings and mds.
      D. Jhn, wh is very particular abut his fd chices.
      10. What can we learn abut the findings f this research?
      A. Avidant-eating parents raise children wh vereat emtinally.
      B. Children mirrr parents’ eating styles, especially greedy and avidant types.
      C. Typical-eating parents create unhealthy fd envirnments fr children.
      D. Emtinal-eating parents priritize children’s hunger cues.
      11. What suggestin des the research give fr parents?
      A. Imprve their wn fd habits befre guiding children.
      B. Strictly mnitr children’s eating behavirs in their childhd.
      C. Islate children frm emtinal eating triggers.
      D. Help children recnfigure their habits as they grw lder.
      D
Unlike the clsed systems f majr artificial intelligence cmpanies in the United States, the Chinese startup sensatin DeepSeek has embraced an pensurce apprach. That path is seen by sme as fstering cllabratin and experimentatin that culd lead t faster breakthrughs. Its web-based chat interface and mbile app are free t use.
The strategy cntrasts sharply with cmpanies like OpenAI, which keep their mdels prprietary and charge mnthly fees fr access. DeepSeek’s apprach has garnered strng supprt, with pensurce advcates saying that the US culd advance by embracing the cheaper, mre accessible strategy. The cmpany has demnstrated that AI breakthrughs can be achieved thrugh innvatin rather than sheer cmputing pwer, challenging the established paradigms f AI develpment and sending shck waves thrugh Silicn Valley, Wall Street and Washingtn.
DeepSeek, based in Hangzhu, Zhejiang prvince, has captured wrldwide attentin ver the past tw weeks with the release f tw large language mdels that rival the perfrmance f the dminant tls develped by US tech giants — but at a fractin(微量)f the cst and with far less cmputing pwer. The cmpany achieved remarkable results with an investment f less than $6 millin and apprximately 2,000 less sphisticated chips. Fr cmparisn, Meta’s latest Llama 3.1 mdel required 16,000 f Nvidia’s advanced H100 chips fr training — chips that are currently prhibited fr use by Chinese cmpanies under US exprt cntrls. Facing the cnstraint f high-perfrming chips, DeepSeek develped creative methds t train its mdels n less advanced chips thrugh ptimizatins in mdel architecture, training prcedures and hardware management.
Rather than viewing DeepSeek as an adversary, US cmpanies shuld see its breakthrugh as an pprtunity t pursue innvatin in a different directin, experts say. Kat Duffy, senir fellw fr digital and cyberspace plicy at the Cuncil n Freign Relatins, said that these innvative methds highlight a dwnside t the US’ apprach t AI. “The fcus in the American innvatin envirnment n develping artificial general intelligence and building larger and larger mdels is nt cnsistent with the needs f mst cuntries arund the wrld,” she said in an article published by her rganizatin. “The mre the United States pushes Chinese develpers t build within a highly cnstrained envirnment, the mre it risks psitining China as the glbal leader in develping cst-effective, energy-saving appraches t AI,” Duffy said.
      12. What is mentined as DeepSeek’s key advantage ver US AI cmpanies?
      A. Its mdels feature greater cmputing pwer at a lw cst.
      B. It emplys a prprietary strategy t ensure higher prfits.
      C. It adpts an pensurce strategy with significantly lwer csts.
      D. It aims t fster cllabratin and experimentatin.
      13. The underlined wrd “cnstraint” in the passage is clsest in meaning t_________.
      A. availabilityB. restrictin
      C. demandD. emergence
      14. What can be inferred frm Kat Duffy’s wrds abut the US apprach t AI develpment?
      A. The US shuld priritize building even larger AI mdels t maintain dminance.
      B. The US strategy meets the practical demands f mst natins effectively.
      C. Mst cuntries urgently require advanced artificial general intelligence.
      D. US restrictins may unintentinally strengthen China’s leadership in practical AI slutins.
      15. What is the main idea f the text?
A China’s AI innvatin challenges US dminance.
      B. Deepseek’s pen-surce strategy bsts glbal cperatin.
      C. Cmputing pwer determines AI develpment.
      D. US needs t change the fcus f its innvatin envirnment.
