      When it cmes t making lunch fr their kids, mms and dads have usual favrites. Fr sme parents in the US, thse favrites are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches — als knwn as PB&Js. Fruit like apples and bananas are als ppular.
      But ne mther has an unusual g-t ingredient fr her children's lunches. Jenny Mllen uses funny-lking candy eyes. She has learned that her children will eat any healthy fd if it has edible eyeballs attached. The "eyeballs" are really pieces f candy.
      Her children laugh while they eat healthy fds like bell peppers, kiwis, r dates. Mllen says candy "eyes" make lunch mre fun.
      "Hnestly, first f all, just buy yurself sme candy ggly eyes. They are tried-and-true," she said. She admits that "yu lse smething nutritinally" by giving children candy. But she thinks that getting children t eat healthy fd by putting candy n it is wrth it.
      Mllen's lunch tricks bring tgether fd and craft. She uses tricks because her tw sns hate t eat different kinds f fds. S, she decrates their fd t resemble animals r even their favrite Pkémn characters. She makes edible "bugs" made frm dates, pretzel sticks fr the legs, and, f curse, candy "eyes”.       I’ve been wrking steadily fr hurs nw, but feel as if I haven’t even started. My attentin is being pulled frm my assigned task — writing this stry — by a myriad f what I believe are necessary wrk interruptins.
      Unfrtunately, all t many f us are having such “squirrel” days, accrding t Dr. Glria Mark, a prfessr f infrmatics at the University f Califrnia, Irvine, wh studies hw digital media impacts ur lives. Mark explained hw decades f research has tracked the decline f the ability t fcus.
      “In 2004, we measured the average attentin n a screen t be 2½ minutes,” Mark said. “Sme years later, we fund attentin spans t be abut 75 secnds. Nw we find peple can nly pay attentin t ne screen fr an average f 47 secnds.”
      Nt nly d peple cncentrate fr less than a minute n any ne screen, Mark said, but when attentin is diverted frm an active wrk prject, it als takes abut 25 minutes t refcus n that task.
      Hw can that be? “If we lk at wrk in terms f switching prjects, as ppsed t the micr view f switching screens, we find peple spend abut 10½ minutes in any wrk prject befre being interrupted and then switch t anther wrk prject,” Mark said.
      Yes, but then we return t the riginal wrk, right? Wrng, Mark said. Instead, when we are interrupted n prject tw, we switch yet again t a different task — call it prject three. Unbelievably, her research has shwn we are als interrupted n prject three, and mve n t prject fur.
      “And then yu g back and pick up the riginal interrupted prject,” Mark explained. “But it’s nt like yu’re interrupted and yu d nthing. Fr ver 25 minutes, yu’re actually wrking n ther things.”
      “Hwever, there’s als a switch cst,” Mark added. “A switch cst is the time it takes yu t rerient back t yur wrk: ‘Where was I? What was I thinking f?’ That additinal effrt can als lead t errrs and stress.”
