During summer in the early 1980s, a strange underwater nise trubled husebat wners in Sausalit, Califrnia. Peple living n husebats had guessed that there might be army-related actins r underwater ships. But when the mystery was finally slved in 1985, the truth was perhaps even mre surprising, because f the nise that is “almst deafening” and sunds like cming frm machines, it’s the male tadfish (蟾鱼) that are searching fr their mates.
Scientists and fishermen have lng knwn tadfish and a few ther fish species t be rather talkative. But new research shws that the ability t make sund is a far mre widespread feature amng fish.
“What ur study tells is that with fish sund prductin being widespread, it begins t change the way we cnsider the sunds f the cean,” says Aarn Rice. Rice and his cauthrs fund that fish’s ability t make nise had independently develped at least 33 times within the class f fish. This tells us, says Rice, hw “imprtant” sund cmmunicatin might be fr fish, “and that there is a very strng selectin pressure t use sund.” That is, factrs like the availability f fd have meant that, fr many species, fish that culd prduce sund std a better chance f survival.
The new study raises sme cncerning questins. If sund cmmunicatin is s imprtant fr fish, then, says Rice, “the widespread range f human nise pllutin in the ceans may actually have sme serius cnsequences n them.” A 2018 review f studies int human-caused underwater nise pllutin recrds a lng list f harm dne t fish species, including avidance f imprtant habitats, higher death rates, and pr grwth rates. T take a specific example, when expsed t bat nise, tadfish struggle t cmmunicate and find mates, limiting reprductin and ptentially affecting entire ppulatins.
Currently, there is n internatinal rule n cean nise pllutin. “The new evidence f fish sund cmmunicatin being a cmmn feature culd be imprtant fr increasing rule f nise.” says Miyk Sakashita, wh wrks fr better law-making prtectins fr underwater life.
      8. What can be learned abut the sund f male tadfish?
      A. It changed rapidly frm time t time.B. It helped fishermen learn t catch fish.
      C. It sunded like cming frm engines.D. It caused wars amng husebat wners.
      9. What did Rice and his team find frm their study?
      A. Fish sund prductin is quite cmmn.B. Tadfish have develped hundreds f times.
      C. Bilgical diversity allws fish t survive.D. Many fish species share a cmmn language.
10 Why des the authr give the example f tadfish in paragraph 4?
      A. T shw nise pllutin can d harm t sea fish species.
      B. T prve an increasing number f fish species are endangered.
      C. T stress humans are causing mre underwater nise pllutin.
      D. T explain hw fish adapt themselves t plluted envirnments.
      11. What is Sakashita’s attitude t Rice’s new research?
      A. Curius.B. Negative.C. Dubtful.D. Supprtive.
      【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. D

We dn’t expect everyne t sing like Adele. But we all knw peple wh struggle t match and figure ut musical pitch (音高). They’re usually named “tne-deaf”. S is tne deafness a real cnditin? And if s, why are sme peple tne-deaf?
In shrt, yes, tne deafness is a disrder related t the nervus system, which is called amusia. Hwever, nt everyne wh lacks musical skills has this cnditin, which affects abut 4% f the ppulatin. Fr the majrity f sufferers, it’s passed frm their parents. Sme peple can develp amusia later in life, usually as a cnsequence f having serius brain damage.
One f the main cnsequences f having amusia is that yu are likely t struggle with recgnizing music yu have heard befre, withut the help f sng wrds. But amusia differs frm persn t persn, and s d the experiences f amusic peple. The mst cmmn frm f amusia is pitch-based. Many amusics lack pitch understanding, s the difference in pitch—the pitch interval (音程) — needs t be much bigger befre they can feel it.
Despite that, musically challenged peple are able t prcess and recgnize cmmn envirnmental sunds, human vices and the musical quality f speech, pssibly because speech uses larger pitch intervals t express related infrmatin. In cntrast, meldies use mstly smaller nes.
While sme individuals with amusia are fully aware they have it, thers can live fr their whle lives withut knwing abut their cnditin. This is because tne deafness can shw itself in different ways, and its seriusness is different frm ne persn t anther. Sme peple may have accidentally develped techniques t make up fr their cnditin by relying n ther signs, which can hide their inability t ntice pitch accurately.
Brain imaging shws that amusic brains receive and respnd t pitch infrmatin, but it des nt reach cnscius awareness. The nerve cells in them fire in respnse t pitch differences that the persn can’t recgnize. Maybe if scientists culd develp training methds that culd cntrl that uncnscius respnse, we culd find a way t slve it.
      12. What d we knw abut amusic peple?
      A. Mst f them are brn with the cnditin.B. Mst f them hide the cnditin in real life.
      C. They may suffer brain damage in ld age.D. They are peple with rich musical skills.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “nes” in paragraph 4 refer t?
      A. Pitch intervals.B. Musical instruments.C. Human vices.D. Envirnmental sunds.
14 What des paragraph 5 mainly talk abut?
      A. The influences tne deafness has n peple’s daily life.
      B. Different signs that indicate the cnditin f tne deafness.
      C. Reasns why peple are unaware f their tne deafness.
      D. The skills peple use t make up fr their tne deafness.
      15. What des brain imaging shw abut amusic brains?
      A. They aren’t able t ntice any pitch differences.
      B. They have sme abnrmal activities in nerve cells.
      C. They can’t receive r react t pitch infrmatin.
      D. They fail t cnsciusly prcess pitch infrmatin.
