The library system started in the 1920s and int the 1980s.
Rbert Andersn, wh has wrked as a librarian at the LAPL since 1980, says the staff review cards were a handy tl that library staff used t answer specific questins the public had abut different bks. The reviews, alng with being a helpful public tl, als helped staff pick which bks the LAPL wuld rder fr their shelves. If a staff member reviewed a bk favrably, they were mre likely t carry the title and rder multiple cpies.
The review prcess was simple: On an index card, library staff wuld handwrite r type up an abstract f a bk they read and give their persnal review f it. The cards ffered adjectives that the reviewer culd underline t indicate hw the stry might affect readers emtinally. Fr example, fr the library’s review f Virginia Wlf’s 1925 bk Mrs. Dallway, the reviewer underlined “whlesme,” “pleasant,” and “interesting.” Of the staff member’s characterizatin f the bk, Andersn said he wasn’t sure why the reviewer cnsidered Wlf’s writing—which deals with lneliness and ther, ften dark human experiences—t be healthy, “but they did.”
The Ls Angeles Public Library’s index f staff review cards isn’t used regularly anymre. But the system nw serves as a histrical recrd f bth the bks, sme almst 100 years ld, as well as the cultural views held by the bk-lving library staff f the time.

Lts f peple snre. In the U. S., abut 10% f the adult ppulatin have it, and wrldwide, the figure is a billin.
The prblem isn’t the snring, but the reasn behind it. The mst cmmn type f sleep apnea (呼吸暂停) is caused by weakened thrat muscles relaxing t much during sleep, causing the airway t narrw r clse. That leads t snring plus lng pauses between breaths. And when breathing is affected this way, the brain isn’t getting the xygen it needs. Obesity and age are cnsidered the biggest risk factrs fr sleep apnea. Other risk factrs include smking, having a thick neck r narrw thrat, family histry and certain medical cnditins.
Treating sleep apnea is far mre imprtant than just stpping snring. The diagnsis requires several steps. Besides a medical histry and physical exam, dctrs try t rule ut ther cnditins, such as asthma (哮喘) r thyrid (甲状腺) disrders, that can cause similar symptms. And they recmmend a sleep study t check n breathing, heart rate and ther functins during sleep.
Once the cnditin has been diagnsed, there are many ptins fr treatment. Fr mild cases in peple wh are verweight, lifestyle changes can be enugh t reverse sleep apnea. Stpping smking and drinking may help. Even switching frm sleeping n yur back t n yur side may ffer relief.
When treatment is required, the mst cmmn is a machine called CPAP. “It’s a mask that prevents cllapse in the back f the thrat,” explains Atul Malhtra, a prfessr and sleep medicine specialist at the University f Califrnia. “It has an unnecessarily bad reputatin, since it’s well tlerated by mst patients. But yu need t find the right mask and the right pressure settings.” There’re als certain surgeries that can be dne t keep the airways pen r t remve excess tissue, but these are a last-line treatment after less-invasive methds have failed. There’re many trials underway t evaluate drug treatments.
28.What des Paragraph 2 mainly explain abut sleep apnea?
A.Its risk factrs.B.Its underlying cause.
C.Its diagnstic prcess.D.Its cmmn symptms.
29.Why d dctrs check fr ther diseases during diagnsis?
A.T make diagnsis faster.B.T exclude ther pssible causes.
C.T prve nly sleep apnea exists.D.T treat snring instead f apnea.
30.What des the underlined wrd “reverse” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A.Cntrl.B.Cure.C.Prevent.D.Change.
31.What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A.There is n special medicine fr sleep apnea.

C.The bitterness cntributes t CAPA’s bad reputatin.
D.CAPA is nw the mst effective treatment fr sleep apnea.
Researchers led by Jsie Hughes in the CREATE Lab in EPFL’s Schl f Engineering wanted t develp a rbt that culd g acrss diverse envirnments as skillfully as animals by changing frm n the fly. With GOAT (Gd Over All Terrains) they have achieved just that—and created a new mdel fr rbtic mvement and cntrl in the prcess.
“While mst rbts cmpute the shrtest path frm A t B, GOAT cnsiders the travel pattern as well as the path t be taken,” Hughes explains. “Fr example, instead f ging arund an bstacle like a stream, GOAT can swim straight thrugh. If its path is hilly, it can passively rll dwnhill like a ball t save bth time and energy, and then actively drive as a rver (漫游者) when rlling is n lnger beneficial.”
T design their rbt, the CREATE team tk inspiratin frm acrss the animal kingdm, including spiders and kangars. The team’s biinspired apprach led t a design that is highly cmpliant (顺应的), meaning it adapts in respnse t interactin with its envirnment, rather than remaining unchangeable. This allws GOAT t actively alter its shape t change its passive prperties, which range frm mre flexible in its ‘rver’ mdel t strnger as a ball.
CREATE Lab PhD student Max Plzin explains that cmpliance als allws GOAT t navigate with minimal sensing equipment. With nly a satellite navigatin system and a device fr measuring the rbt’s wn directin, GOAT carries n cameras nbard. “It desn’t need cmplex sensing. It can use the envirnment, even with very limited knwledge f it, t find the best path,” Plzin says.
Future research includes imprved algrithms (算法) t help with GOAT’s design. Lking ahead, the researchers see many ptential applicatins fr their device, frm envirnmental mnitring t disaster respnse.
32.What key feature distinguishes GOAT?
A.Rlling dwnhill like a ball.
B.Calculating the shrtest A-t-B path.
C.Navigating bstacles such as streams.
D.Efficient adaptatin t varied terrains.
33.Where did GOAT’s designers find their slutin?
A.Frm previus rbts.B.Frm ther researches.
C.Frm ther species.D.Frm edging infrmatin.
34.In which field will GOAT prbably be applied?
A.Educatin.B.Climate.C.Finance.D.Medicine.
35.What wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A.The Future Applicatins f GOAT
B.The Develpment f a New Rbt: GOAT
C.GOAT:A Rbt fr Diverse Envirnments
D.Hw GOAT Saves Time and Energy in Travel
Yu may recall a time when yur child was a baby, cntent in the nursery withut crying. Hwever, the transitin t kindergarten r schl can nw be a stressful situatin fr bth the child and parent. 36 Rather, it indicates that the child nw cmprehends that their parents, upn leaving, d nt disappear but will return at an unknwn time, causing significant uncertainty and distress.

This fear is n lnger f an evlutinary type, and the affective bnd cmes int play, alng with the type f attachment that the parents have established with the child.
39 As adults, it’s imprtant that we understand why ur child feels this way and be patient with them. At these mments, saying “Stp crying, it’s nly ging t be a little while that we will be away”, will nt help the child. It’s imprtant t cnfirm their emtins and hw they feel.
Understanding and managing separatin anxiety is a crucial part f yur child’s develpment. It’s imprtant t remember that this is a nrmal stage in their grwth. 40
