These days, I have been gathering cntributins fr Class Ntes frm my classmates at the Brearley Schl. Seven cntributins have cme in. They are lng r shrt, emtinal r matter-f-fact, and nw my jb will be t cut and select, rephrase and qute, and cunt wrds frm each cntributr- ur entire cllectin will have t add up t n mre than six hundred and fifty wrds.
The tugh part is trying t give mre r less equal space t each f these life accunts, since sme f us tend t relate incidents in great detail while thers are tight-lipped. If nine f us altgether, including me, cntribute ntes, then each nte is allwed a little ver seventy wrds. If anther cntributin cmes in at the last minute, we all g dwn t abut sixty-five. D I cut ut the trip t Csta Rica, r the visit t the nephew in New Jersey? The recent grandchild, brken leg, r Scrabble (拼字游戏) cmpetitin?
Why did I decide I wuld nt mind being a class-ntes agent? I suppse I pursue any piece f writing fr tw main reasns. First, I like the challenge f trying a new frm. In this case, my task is t rearrange the writings f a range f persnalities t create ne fairly smth whle. The secnd reasn is always emtinal. Here, ne surce f my emtin was the years-lng experience f the schl itself. I was als tuched that my classmates suggested me fr the jb, their sensible reasn being: “Yu’re a writer. “
As a 65-year-ld lady, I feel tired smetimes, but I’ve never stpped valuing every mment in this jb. Fr me, my classmates are still full f yuthful energy, passin, r disgust r tearful hurt. I’m nt sure I’m naturally gifted at turning all these clrful details int a brief and entertaining accunt. That’s hw I d it — qute their wn wrds as ften as I can.
      24. What des the authr need t d with the cntributins?
      A. Edit and adjust them. B. Cllect and grade them.
      C. Ensure the variety f them. D. Add persnal cmments t them.
      25. Hw des the authr explain the difficulty f the jb?
      A. By citing qutes. B. By listing examples.
      C. By making cmparisns. D. By giving definitins.
      26. What can we infer abut the authr frm paragraph 3?
      A. She priritizes new frms. B. She prefers emtinal writing.
      C. She is hesitant abut the rle. D. She is acknwledged by her classmates.
      27. What des the authr think f the jb?
      A. It’s stressful. B. It’s wrthwhile. C. It’s straightfrward. D. It’s trublesme.
      C
Heidi Tait, c-funder f Tangara Blue, an rganizatin cmmitted t beach cleaning, was puzzled when she and her teammates started finding strange tire-shaped capsules washed ashre alng the Cape Yrk cast, near Australia’s nrtheastern tip. But Tait eventually cnnected with Satlink — a Spanish satellite cmmunicatins cmpany. Satlink’s GPS-enabled buys (浮标) , the nes the beach cleaners kept finding, help cmmercial fishers track their nets, lines etc. Tait had a brainwave that wuld see the buys nt just recycled but reused.
Fr mre than a decade, bat crews wrking farther west, in Australia’s Gulf f Carpentaria, had been telling Tait abut hw abandned fishing nets were circling the gulf, hurting sea creatures. These s-called ghst ( 幽灵) nets had either brken free frm cmmercial fishing bats and gtten lst, r were cut lse by fishers after getting caught n rcks. Weighing a few tnnes each, the nets that bat crews had chanced upn in the gulf were ften t big fr them t pull ut f the water. They’d typically reprt the finds t the authrities, but by the time anyne with an apprpriately equipped bat culd head ut t get ne, the mass f messy rpe had ften gne frm sight.
Hwever, nce ne f the GPS-enabled buys is attached, it sends its lcatin every few hurs t a website, which lets Tangara Blue mnitr the nets’ mvements’ and warns the rganizatin f danger. S far, the reused GPS trackers have helped Tangara Blue recver three ghst nets frm Australian waters.
Tangara Blue’s idea t track ghst nets isn’t entirely new; researchers with the Cmmnwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisatin (CSIRO), Australia’s natinal science agency, suggested it a decade ag. Taking the idea n bard, the authrities tried using battery-pwered trackers t mnitr a few ghst nets. Tangara Blue’s apprach differs in that its recycled buys are slar pwered and require less upkeep.
      28. What were the tire-shaped capsules riginally used fr?
      A. Remving beach waste. B. Recycling vehicle tires.
      C. Lcating fishing equipment. D. Strengthening satellite signals.
      29. What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 2?
      A. Illustrate a future pssibility. B. Describe a technical prcess.
      C. Present a practical slutin. D. Frame a prblem cntext.
      30. Hw d Tangara Blue’s buys utperfrm earlier trackers?
      A. They need less maintenance. B. They mnitr brader regins.
      C. They receive gvernment funding. D. They prvide precise tracking data.
      31. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Turning Waste int Treasure: A Fix t Ghst Nets
      B. Fighting Threats: The Hidden Harm f Ghst Nets
      C. Financing Change: Innvative Ocean Cleanup Plans
      D. Prtecting Seas frm Waste: An Activist f Cnservatin

In health research, determining true causes — like whether drinking wine affects health — is vital fr infrmed decisins. But “crrelatin des nt equal causatin (因果关系)” is widely recgnized. Then hw d researchers mve beynd crrelatins t find answers?
Crrelatins ften exist withut implying causatin. Fr instance, chclate cnsumptin crrelates with the number f Nbel Prize winners in sme cuntries. Des eating chclate bst Nbel wins? N. This crrelatin likely exists because chclate cnsumptin serves as a prxy fr wealth. In turn, wealth relates t educatin and research funding — key factrs behind Nbel achievements. S, just finding a link isn’t enugh. Scientists need mre strng evidence t establish causatin.
Unlike highly cntrlled chemistry r physics experiments, which can easily shw hw X affects Y, human bilgy ften relies n indirect evidence. It requires “inductive reasning” —drawing general cnclusins frm available evidence. It’s like hw a prsecutr (检察官) builds a criminal case using circumstantial evidence. While individual pieces might nt be persuasive, their build-up strengthens the case. There’s ne interesting cntrast, hwever. . In criminal cases, the standard f prf is “beynd reasnable dubt”, but science demands prf based” n the balance f prbabilities”. This reflects scientists’ willingness t revise their beliefs when better evidence emerges.
Indirect evidence is crucial fr inferring causatin, but it is nt always cnclusive. The gld standard fr direct evidence f causatin is the randmised cntrlled trial (RCT), where participants are randmly assigned t either receive an interventin r t be a “cntrl”. This ensures if yu see a difference between the tw grups, this can nly be due t the effect f the interventin, which effectively prves causatin. Unfrtunately, ethical (道德的) cnsideratins ften prevent us cnducting RCTs. Fr instance, we lack RCT evidence that smking causes lung cancer because the indirect evidence is s strng that such studies wuld be unethical.
Causatin in health desn’t wrk in a simple way. Factrs like lifestyle, genes, and envirnment interact t determine disease risk. Achieving perfect health requires a variety f actins, as n single habit, superfd, r magic pill is the answer.
      32. What des the underlined wrd “prxy” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Replacement. B. Cnditin. C. Indicatr. D. Preference.
      33. Hw d scientists’ inferences differ frm prsecutrs’ cnclusins?
      A. They remain pen t update. B. They guarantee abslute certainty.
      C. They rely largely n indirect evidence. D. They require higher standard f prf.
      34. Why is RTC cnsidered the gld standard fr establishing causatin?
      A. It ffers wide applicatin. B. It ensures fair assignment.
      C. It avids ethical cnsideratins. D. It identifies interventin effects.
      35. What is the authr’s suggestin fr health imprvement?
      A. Cunting n gd habits. B. Integrating multiple strategies.
      C. Taking a cure-all pill. D. Leading an active lifestyle.

I hurried int Lehman’s grcery stre. I was there t buy my grandmther’s hearing aid batteries. Mre imprtantly, this was my chance t visit the lve f my life — Artie.
I ran t the shelf he was n, and there he was, right where I last saw him: a grey little guy with a large muth that fit perfectly ver my shulder as I hugged him tightly. I adred that stuffed dlphin. As I held Artie, Mrs. Lehman, wh had always been kind t me, passed by and smiled knwingly, “Hugging that dlphin again, huh?”
But my brther, Rick, nticed I tk a lng time in Lehman’s, saying, “Yu are a thirteen-year-ld girl nw. Yu are suppsed t be quicker. Next time, I will g with yu.” Oh, great! My brther, Rick. He always laughed at me.
But I wuldn’t give up. S, as we walked int the stre, I suggested t Rick that he get the batteries, since he was lder. Then I headed twards Artie. There he was, awaiting me. I grabbed him and hugged him tightly. Just then, I heard Rick saying, “What in the wrld are yu ding?”
“This is Artie,” I said. “I hug him every single time I cme here.
