When I was fur, my grandfather suddenly gt lst in a park ne day. It was the first instance that infrmed us that he had Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病). Over the past 12 years, his wrsening cnditin and his wandering have been wrrying us. My aunt struggled t stay awake at night t watch ver him, but ften failed. Cncerned abut my aunt’s well-being and my grandfather’s safety, I searched widely fr a slutin, but in vain.
Then tw years ag, while lking after my grandfather, I was impressed by the mment when his ft landed n the flr. Why dn’t I put a pressure sensr n the bttm f his ft? Once he stepped nt the flr and ut f the bed, the pressure sensr wuld detect an increase in pressure caused by bdy weight and then wirelessly send an alarm t the caregiver’s smartphne. My desire t create a sensr-based technlgy was brn.
When laying ut my plan, I faced three main challenges. First, I had t create a wearable sensr. After testing different materials like rubber, which was t thick, I decided t print a film sensr with pressure-sensitive ink particles (颗粒). Next, I had t design a wearable wireless circuit. Thankfully, I was able t find ut abut the Bluetth lw energy technlgy, which prduces little pwer and can be driven by a cin-sized battery. Lastly, I learnt t cde (编码) a smartphne app t turn the caregiver’s smartphne int a remte mnitr.
Integrating these cmpnents, I successfully created tw mdels: a built-in sck sensr and a re-attachable ne. Having tested it n my grandfather with 100% success in detecting his wandering, I beta-tested it at Califrnia care facilities last summer. Nw, I’m using respnse frm tests t imprve it int a marketable prduct.
One thing I’ll never frget is when my device first caught my grandfather’s wandering at night. At that mment, I was really struck by the pwer f technlgy t change lives fr the better.
      4. What drve the authr t seek a slutin?
      A. His knwledge abut Alzheimer’s.B. The encuragement frm his aunt.
      C. His wrries abut treating patients.D. The struggle f tending his grandfather.
      5. What is the purpse f detecting the pressure under a patient’s feet?

Researchers explring the lightless landscape f the Pacific Ocean flr think they’ve bserved hw xygen is prduced n Earth.
Until nw, it was thught that xygen was created nly thrugh phtsynthesis, a prcess that requires sunlight. But the discvery casts dubt n that idea and raises new questins abut the rigins f life itself.
The research team in Sctland, believe xygen is being prduced by electrically charged material called plymetallic ndules (多金属结核), which range in size frm a small particle t abut the dimensins f a ptat.
These ndules — “effectively batteries in a rck,” Sweetman said — may use their electric charge t split seawater int hydrgen and xygen in a prcess called seawater electrlysis (电解).
Researchers cnducted tests n the seaflr and als cllected samples t test abvegrund, and they came up with the same result: that xygen levels increased near the plymetallic ndules.
Seawater can be split int hydrgen and xygen with 1.5 vlts (伏特) f electricity, which is the amunt in an AA battery. Researchers fund that sme f the ndules pssessed as much as 0.95 vlts f electricity, and multiple ndules tgether prduced enugh vltages.
Plymetallic ndules cntain metals such as manganese, nickel and cbalt, which can be used t make the lithium-in batteries used in cnsumer electrnics, appliances and electric vehicles.
Franz Geiger, a Nrthwestern University chemistry prfessr, said that there may be enugh plymetallic ndules in an area f the Pacific Ocean called the Clarin-Clippertn Zne t meet glbal energy demands fr decades after. But mining wuld have t be cnducted in a way that did nt remve xygen fr life frms in that zne.
“A few years ag, a team f marine (海洋) bilgists went back t thse areas mined 40 years ag and fund essentially n life,” Geiger said. “And then a few hundred meters ver t the left and right, where the ndules were untuched, plenty f life.”
      8. Why is the discvery significant?
      A. It casts dubt n the existence f “dark xygen.”
      B. It shakes the view n the surce f xygen.
      C. It shws the prcess f phtsynthesis.
      D. It displays the rigin f life itself.
      9. What enables seawater electrlysis in the deep sea?
      A. Phtsynthesis.B. Sunlight reaching the seaflr.
      C. Plymetallic ndules.D. Chemical reactins in seawater.
      10. Why are the ndules in sptlights?
      A. T describe the mechanism in splitting seawater.
      B. T demnstrate hw pwerful AA batteries are.
      C. T stress the practicality f electricity generatin.
      D. T explain why mre xygen exists near the ndules.
      11. What can we infer frm Geiger’s wrds?
      A. Marine eclgy must be respected while mining ndules.
      B. The Clarin-Clippertn Zne has n life due t mining.
      C. Marine bilgists ppse mining in the cean.
      D. Mining ndules is beneficial fr marine life.
      【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A

We tend t think f large cities as melting pts — places where peple frm all srts f backgrunds can assciate and interact. But accrding t a new research, peple in big cities tend t primarily interact with ther individuals in the same sciecnmic level, while peple in small cities and rural areas are much mre likely t have diverse interactins.
A team f researchers led by Stanfrd University used GPS data cllected frm 9.6 millin cellphnes in the United States t determine hw ften peple f different sciecnmic statuses crssed paths during the day.
After inferring each persn’s sciecnmic status frm estimated rental prices n a husing marketing website, the researchers cunted ptential interactins between users ver the curse f the day — times where tw cellphnes had GPS pings (定位仪) within 50 meters f each ther within a five-minute windw. They cllected data n almst 1.6 billin path-crssings. The researchers fund a clear pattern that has been missed by similar studies in the past: large cities cntributed t sciecnmic segregatin.
“That seems like an unexpected bservatin,” said Jure Leskvec, a prfessr f the team. “But there is a large variety f chices in big cities. In New Yrk, yu can spend $10 r $1,000 n a dinner, while if yu live in a place with nly ne restaurant, everyne ges there, rich r pr. That seems t be the main mechanism fr segregatin.”
The gd news is, there are ways t build cities t have mre sciecnmic mixing. Lking at large cities, the researchers fund that thse that placed frequently-visited activity centres between different neighbrhds — instead f in the centre f each neighbrhd — were less likely t cntribute t sciecnmic segregatin.
“We’ve lng emphasised residential integratin, but we nw have a new way,” said Grusky, a member f the research team. “When new shpping centres and ther activity centres are up fr apprval, we need t make sure they’re lcated in places that will prmte diversity.”
      12. What is the main finding f the study?
      A. Peple in small cities have mre diverse interactins.
      B. Peple in large cities are mre likely t segregate.
      C. Peple in rural areas are mre likely t mix with thers.
      D. Peple in different sciecnmic statuses are equal in cities.
      13. What des Leskvec think f the main mechanism fr segregatin?
      A. It is unexpected but reasnable.B. It is reasnable but unacceptable.
      C. It is acceptable but hard t change.D. It is hard t change but necessary.
      14. What can be inferred frm the passage?
      A. There are mre chices in big cities.B. There are fewer chices in small cities.
      C. There are mre activity centres in big cities.D. There are fewer activity centres in small cities.
      15. What is the passage mainly abut?
      A. The impact f technlgy n cities.B. The impact f cities n sciecnmic segregatin.
      C. The impact f sciecnmic segregatin n cities.D. The impact f activity centres n sciecnmic segregatin.
      【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. B
