While visiting these favelas, famus fr their crime and drug prblems, the artists saw smething different — ptential. What if they culd paint the ld huses and dirty buildings and turn them int art?
Mst favelas in Brazil were built by the peple wh live in them as they mved t the cities in search f wrk. They were built withut any f the planning that makes cities functinal and attractive. Klhaas and Urhahn wanted t d their paintings in the same way the favelas were built, using lcal peple t paint and letting the paintings be created withut t much planning. First, they started spending a lt f time in Vila Cruzeir, a favela neighbrhd. As lcal residents became excited abut the prject, Klhaas and Urhahn began hiring lcal wrkers t paint the huses they selected. They wrked fr 18 mnths, and the result was clrful neighbrhd paintings that cver dzens f buildings.
Critics f Klhaas and Urhahn’s art prjects say that painting such trubled neighbrhds des nt address the real prblems they face. Klhaas and Urhahn agree. They dn’t expect a painting t slve cmplex scial and ecnmic issues. Hwever, they believe that bringing clrful art int disadvantaged neighbrhds des smething else. It inspires the lcal residents and gives them pride in their cmmunity. It changes attitude.

Snw can be a pwerful reminder f childhd snw days — that jyful surprise when anther expected day f sitting in schl turned int ne that was instead filled with snwball fights r skating. But there are als plenty f reasns why snw can appeal t peple withut that fnd nstalgia (怀旧).
Snw quite literally changes ur physical experience f the wrld. Fr example, freshly fallen snw is prus (多孔的) enugh t absrb sund well, making the wrld quieter. And it plays even mre strngly n ur sense f sight. One aspect f that visual appeal is the way snw reflects light in the darker mnths. “A lt f peple really struggle with winter darkness as much as they struggle with the cld,” says Leibwitz, wh has written a bk abut mental health in winter. “The brightening effect f the snw, I think, is really pwerful.”
Snw changes the very shape f the wrld peple see arund them, Leibwitz says, pinting t the way a fresh blanket f it hides and yet reveals the surrundings. “Things that yu lk at every day suddenly can appear very different,” she says.
In the right cnditins, snw can be fascinating. But fr certain peple, the same weather can becme the very ppsite: annying, exhausting r depressing. Leibwitz recmmends welcming changing seasns, taking inspiratin frm the lng nights and cld days—and argues that snw can be a helpful cue t d s. “It’s such a clear visual reminder that we’re in a different seasn that perhaps it inspires peple t respnd mre adaptively,” she says.
But as climate change cntinues t unfld, sme histrically snwy areas will lse the mst magical precipitatin (降水) and face nthing but cld rain. “There are a lt f places in the wrld that are right n this brderline where the difference f a cuple f degrees f warming is the difference between a white, snwy winter…and a gray, rainy winter,” Leibwitz says. “I think there’s a lt that is lst when we lse the cld and when we lse the snw.”
8. What des the underlined wrd “ne” refer t in paragraph 1?
A. A reminder.B. A surprise.C. A day.D. A snwball.
9. Hw des snw change ur experience f the wrld?
A. By making musical sunds.B. By increasing the cld f winter.
C. By exercising ur sense f sight.D. By ffering a new lk f the wrld.
10. What is Leibwitz’s suggestin t snw haters?
A. Searching fr visual cues.B. Ignring negative emtins.
C. Adjusting t seasnal changes.D. Cleaning unpleasant surrundings.
11. What des the authr intend t d in the last paragraph?
A. Express cncern fr snw lss.B. Make predictins f climate change.
C. Present reasns fr increased rainfall.D. Summarize cnsequences f cld rain.

In 2018, neurscientist Yina Ma was at a ceremny at Beijing Nrmal University when the crwd began t sing the schl sng. Shuting alng, she felt a flash f pride tward the university and a cnnectin t thse in the crwd wh felt the same way. The mment left a lasting impressin, inspiring her interest in brain synchrnizatin (同步). “Smething special must have been happening in ur brains,” Ma says.
Scientists have been thinking abut that "smething special" since the 1960s. In 2000s, they systematically shwed peple’s brains can crdinate(协调)in a phenmenn called “interbrain synchrny.” In 2024, several studies — including ne c-authred by Ma — prvided new insight int the phenmenn. Taken tgether, the studies suggest that synchrny is much mre cmmn amng strangers than nce thught.
Hping t reveal hw scial bnding influences interactins, Ma and her clleagues separated their participants int teams f three and tracked the activity in the participants’ cerebral crtices as sme were bnded with their teams(assigned team clrs and unifrms and asked t talk abut team similarities via cmputer chat)while thers simply cmputer chatted. The teams were asked t select leaders and then divide imaginary resurces. Analyzing the team cnversatins and their brain scans, the researchers fund that, thugh the bnded and nnbnded teams were made f strangers, the bnded teams achieved increased interbrain synchrny, which can be seen frm mre rapid and respnsive discussin between leaders and fllwers. The study als suggests that strangers’ brains can synchrnize after a bit f bnding.
Anther paper published in Scientific Reprts arrived at a similar result. Cmparing synchrnizatin between pairs f strangers and pairs f acquaintances(泛泛之交), the authrs arranged fr participants t crdinate tapping a cmputer muse, anticipating that the acquaintance pairs wuld perfrm better. The stranger pairs, hwever, shwed strnger synchrnizatin, suggesting that synchrny is high amng peple with weak and strng ties and lw amng acquaintances. It indicates that wrking with strangers requires mre crdinatin and cncentratin, thus increasing interbrain synchrnizatin.
While scientists nw appreciate that brains synchrnize, they still want t understand why, whether strange r familiar.
12. What led t the beginning f Ma’s research?
A. The pride twards the university.B. The cperatin f neurscientists.
C. The cnnectin t frmer classmates.D. The scene f singing the schl sng.
13 What can we learn abut Ma and her clleagues’ study?
A. Bnded teams interacted mre efficiently.
B. Bnded teams chse their team clrs vluntarily.
C. Nnbnded teams wrked withut a leader.
D. Nnbnded teams divided imaginary resurces faster.
14. Which f the fllwing may illustrate the finding in paragraph 4?
A. B.
C. D.
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Strangers in Synchrny.
B. Bnding Between Brains.
C. Scial Crdinatin: A Mystery t Be Slved.
D Interbrain Synchrny: A Key t Team Interactins.
