I was brn missing my left hand, yet I learned t adapt. One f my earliest memries is my father trying t
teach me t tie my shes. I gently pushed him aside and figured ut a way t d it with ne hand. My parents tried
t make me feel rdinary, but the reality was inescapable.
When I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-cnscius, I remembered getting n the bus and ne f
the ther kids stared just a little t lng at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge t hide my hand. I had decided that if
peple knew abut my missing hand, they wuld nt want t be arund me anymre.
Making friends was challenging enugh, but finding lve was particularly discuraging. As I started dating,I
made effrts t hide my difference. Eventually we’d reach a pint in the relatinship where I knew I had t tell the
truth. I’d think ver the “big reveal” and build it up in my mind fr days. When I had gathered the curage, I let ut
my secret ver the phne and hung up in a panic. Even when I received a call, I culdn’t face discussing it, relying
n the answering machine.
Everyne I shared this with — friend, c-wrker r byfriend — said kind things like, “Yu shuldn’t hide
it.” r “It’s n big deal.” But their wrds didn’t matter t me. The nly wrds that really mattered were the nes I
was telling myself, that stry f hw I was unwrthy f lve.

At 28, tired f hiding, I met smene special. Fr the first time, I allwed smene t really hld, lk at, take
pictures f, tuch and lve my limb— lve me.
That relatinship ended after ten years, but I kept the self-lve and cmpassin I learned frm it. Frm that
pint n, I saw my difference as smething unique and beautiful abut me, smething that shuld be shwn, nt
hidden.

Thirty years ag, while wrking n a right whale research prject in the Bay f Fundy, Canada, I witnessed a
remarkable sight. A male right whale with mud n its head, indicating it had been feeding at the bttm, came up t
breathe and rest. Just befre diving again, it let ut a huge mass f pp(粪便). The water was filled with pp that
lked like red flating bricks and had a strng, unpleasant smell. If it gt n yur clthes, yu’d have t discard
them as it culdn’t be washed ut.
This initial encunter later inspired me t cnduct glbal search fr whale pp, taking me frm Iceland t
Mexic, Alaska, and Hawaii. Right whale pp has a particularly strng and awful smell, but I’ve cme t
appreciate it. Whale pp prvides valuable insights. It shws what whales eat, their hrmnes, if they’re ready t
reprduce, hw stressed they are, what’s in their gut(内脏), and their family tree. It als helps us assess the level f
mercury and pllutin in the cean.
This experience set the path fr my research career. Tw years after seeing whale pp fr the first time, I
tk an cean eclgy class and learned abut the bilgical pump. Phytplanktn(浮游植物)grws near the cean

surface and thrugh the fd chain, nutrients can sink t the deep sea. Hwever, I realized that right whales, which
feed at depth and pp at the surface, likely bring nutrients like irn and s n back up. This led t the cncept f
the “whale pump”, which des the ppsite f the bilgical pump by pumping nutrients back t the surface. These
nutrients can be absrbed by phytplanktn and flw thrugh the cean fd chain. This is imprtant because sme
peple in Japan, Nrway, and Iceland think whales eat “ur fish” and cause fish numbers t drp. The whale pump
shws that the relatinship is mre cmplex and that whales might actually increase fish ppulatins.
Whale pp nt nly helps us understand the present cean but als gives us a lk int the past when there
were mre whales. Restring whales and their nutrient pathways culd help make the cean mre diverse.
8. What des the underlined wrd “discard” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Abandn. B. Wash. C. Keep. D. Appreciate.
9. Why des the authr appreciate whale pp?
A. It prvides a remarkable sight. B. It makes the authr travel a lt.
C. It lks like red flating bricks. D. It makes precius insights available.
10. What is the effect f the “whale pump”?
A. Nutrients flat t the surface. B. Fisheries experience a decline.
C. The cean fd chain is threatened. D. The envirnment is plluted severely.
11. What is the purpse f the text?
A. T describe the abnrmal behavir f right whales.
B. T explain the eclgical imprtance f whale pp.
C. T argue against the idea that whales harm fisheries.
D. T discuss hw we can understand the present cean.

A Queensland University f Technlgy (QUT) research team has taken inspiratin frm the brains f insects
and animals fr mre energy-efficient rbtic navigatin.
The research, led by Dr Hussaini, alng with Prfessr Milfrd and Dr Fischer frm the QUT Centre fr
Rbtics, was published in IEEE Transactins n Rbtics. They came up with a nvel place recgnitin algrithm
(算法) using Spiking Neural Netwrks (SNNs).
“SNNs are artificial neural netwrks that imitate hw bilgical brains prcess infrmatin using brief,
separate signals, much like hw neurns (神经元) in animal brains cmmunicate,” Dr Hussaini said. “These
netwrks are particularly well-suited fr neurmrphic hardware — specialized cmputer hardware that cpies

bilgical neural system — enabling faster prcessing and significantly reduced energy cnsumptin.”
Mdern rbts still struggle t navigate and perate in cmplex, unknwn envirnments. They als ften rely
n AI-based navigatin systems that need a lt f cmputing pwer and energy fr training.
Dr Fischer said, “Animals are really gd at getting arund in large, dynamic envirnments. They d it
efficiently and reliably.” He thinks this research is a step clser t making navigatin systems inspired by bilgy.
These systems might ne day be better than tday’s cnventinal appraches.
The system develped by the QUT team uses small neural netwrk parts t recgnize specific places frm
images. These parts were put tgether t make a grup f spiking netwrks t create a navigatin system that can
learn t mve arund in large envirnments.
“Using a series f images instead f single pictures enabled an imprvement f 41 percent in place recgnitin
accuracy, allwing the system t adapt t appearance changes ver time and acrss different seasns and weather
cnditins,” Prfessr Milfrd said.
“This research can help make mre efficient and reliable navigatin systems fr autnmus rbts in
energy-limited envirnments. It’s especially gd fr things like space explratin and disaster recvery, where
using energy well and being quick t respnd are critical,” Dr Hussaini said.
12. What des the QUT research fcus n?
A. Testing artificial intelligence systems.
B. Imitating AI-based navigatin systems.
C. Managing existing rbtic navigatin systems.
D. Creating bi-inspired rbtic navigatin systems.
13. What is a key advantage f SNNs?
A. Requiring lw energy. B. Cnducting bject detectin.
C. Prducing suitable hardware. D. Prcessing separate infrmatin.
14. What can be inferred abut neural netwrk parts?
A. They analyze envirnmental sunds. B. They assess cnventinal appraches.
C. They enable accurate place recgnitin. D. They measure different weather cnditins.
15. What’s the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. The significance f the research. B. The advantage f the system.
C. The efficiency f the navigatin. D. The perfrmance f the applicatin.
