Jyner ran a yuth camp, s that summer, he shwed the campers hw t grw their wn fd n the small land. The kids, 4 t 16 years ld, ate up the vegetables they had grwn, and the fllwing year, they gave free bxes f vegetables t the ld peple in the twn.
Nt everyne welcmed the idea. Sme church elders questined whether it was wise t let kids take part in agrarian pursuit(农业工作). But Jyner saw it differently. “The kids are bringing fd t peple wh need it. They enjy what they’re ding,” he said. At the same time, it imprved the health f the cmmunity by prviding healthy fds.
Tday, because f Jyner, that small land has changed int the 21-acre Cnete Family Life Center. The lcal hspital, schls and restaurants help the center by buying its salad greens, peppers, strawberries, and ther fd fr peple. Research frm East Carlina University fund that peple in Cnete have lst weight, lwered their bld pressure, and visited the hspital less frequently because f the fresh fd and health advice available at the center.

      C
In my scial netwrk, there are several members wh generate cmplicated feelings in me, including delight and fear. Interactins with them feel like a cnversatinal game f Russian rulette (轮盘赌). In the right md, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but if I catch them at the wrng mment, they can wipe ut all my psitive energy. There is simply n knwing what is t cme. If this sunds familiar, then yu t have frenemies.
Julianne Hlt-Lunstad and her clleagues at Brigham Yung University have designed a scale(量表) that identifies fur categries f relatinships. Yu can try it fr yurself. Pick cuple f peple within yur scial netwrk and answer the fllwing tw questins n a scale f ne (nt at all) t six (very much). When yu are feeling in need f advice, understanding r a favr, hw helpful is yur cnnectin? Likewise, hw upsetting is yur cnnectin?
Peple wh scre ne n bth questins are yur indifferent relatinships —a neighbr, perhaps, with neither gd nr bad qualities. Thse wh scre highly n the first questin, while getting the lwest pssible rating n the secnd, are yur supprtive and lyal scial ties. Thse with the lwest scre n the first questin and high marks n the secnd are aversive relatinships. Finally, anyne with a scre f tw r mre n bth scales is cnsidered an ambivalent cnnectin—yur frenemies. They may be incredibly generus when yu have a prblem yet can als fight back with a cruel cmment when they feel envius r threatened.
Research suggests that ambivalent, lve-hate relatinships are ften mre stressful than cnsistently negative nes, damaging mental and physical health. Cutting ff cntact may nt always be pssible, especially if the persn is a bss r family member. S, what can be dne?
Simply being aware f the ambivalent nature f a relatinship might ffer sme prtectin. Persnally, I use this insight t prepare myself emtinally, fcus n the psitive, and limit interactins when needed. It als leads me t reflect n my wn actins --am I ever the frenemy? I am determined t be a little mindful f my interactins with all my ties.
      28. Why des the authr cmpare interactins with certain peple t Russian rulette?
      A. T suggest ways t handle these interactins.
      B. T shw hw these peple cmpete fr attentin.
      C. T stress hw unpredictable these interactins can be.
      D. T intrduce a scial game these peple like t play.
      29. Which figure best illustrates the different types f relatinships in ur scial netwrk?
      A. B.
      C. D.
      30. Accrding t the last paragraph, what may the authr agree with?
      A. Cautin against acting like a frenemy.
      B. Avid interacting with frenemies cmpletely.
      C. Encurage frenemies t act mre emtinally.
      D. Balance frenemies with supprtive friendship
      31. What is the central message the authr intends t cnvey thrugh this text?
      A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
      B. Only true friends are wrth keeping.
      C. A healthy friendship needs give-and-take.
      D. Lve-hate relatinships are quite harmful.
      D
The numerus bacteria that naturally inhabit the human bdy seem t help us in many ways. One grup is emerging as particularly beneficial: a type f gut (肠道) bacteria knwn as Blautia, which has made headlines recently because it seems t prduce sme really remarkable effects. Nw, a Chinese team is glimpsing anther ptential benefit f Blautia: helping peple adapt t high altitudes. Their findings suggest that prviding Blautia culd help muntaineers and thers perfrm better in these challenging envirnments.
Qing-Peng Kng, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy f Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men t mve frm their hmes at 250 meters abve sea level t a twn at abut 3,700 meters. Despite the thin air, the men ate similar fd as they had at hme, minimizing the effects f diet changes n their gut bacteria. After 2 days, Blautia went frm being rare t very abundant in their guts.
In the secnd experiment, the team expsed mice t cntrlled lw-xygen cnditins in the lab first and then simulated(模拟) an altitude f 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia t half f them every ther day. The Blautia-treated mice shwed milder respnse f altitude sickness. This pens the dr int whether altitude sickness might be amenable t treatment thrugh the gut.
The bacteria’s effect may als extend t the brain. “Its superpwer cmes frm the cnnectin between the gut and the brain,” says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley Cllege. The fatty acids it makes are knwn t activate receptrs(神经末梢) n nerves that cnnect the digestive system, heart and brain. This culd help explain a surprising relatinship that Klepac-Cerak reprted last year: Kids are mre likely t talk and laugh when they have mre Blautia in their guts. “There’s lts f cmmunicatin happening between ur brain; we are just beginning t uncver what services bacteria d fr us.” Klepac-Cerak ntes.
Blautia’s apparent superpwers suggest t Kng it culd serve as a supplement (补充) that benefits peple regardless f whether they are planning a trip t Tibet. But first, Kng says, he wants t find ut whether Blautia is a “sl” player r has these prtective effects nly as part f a larger grup f bacteria.
      32. What’s the newly-fund benefit f the study led by a Chinese team?
      A. It gets public attentin.B. It helps peple d better at high altitudes.
      C. It makes scial media angry.D. It intrduces an advanced new technlgy.
      33. What d we knw abut the subjects (实验对象) in bth experiments?
      A. They experienced lw-xygen cnditins.
      B. They received Blautia in their diet.
      C. They mved t high-altitude regins.
      D. They suffered severe altitude sickness.
      34. What des the underlined wrd “amenable” in Paragraph 3 mean?”.
      A. CarelessB. Untreatable.C. UnchangeableD. Reactive.
      35. Hw wuld bth Kng and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautia’s rle in human health?
      A duble-edged swrd.B. A sl player.
      C. An extremely effective slutin.D. A partially-understd influence

This destrys the habitats f cuntless species and cntributes t sil lss.
38 Gvernments arund the wrld have been passing stricter envirnmental laws and regulatins. These laws are effective in cntrlling industrial pllutin. Fr example, they set limits n the amunt f pllutants that factries can release and require heavy fines as punishment.
Renewable energy surces are als being increasingly used. Slar and wind energy, in particular, are catching n. 39 Renewable energy s surces can reduce ur dependence n fssil(化石)f fuels and lwer carbn emissins.
Besides, individuals can als play a vital rle in prtecting the eclgical envirnment. We can start with simple things in ur daily lives, such as saving water and electricity. 40 We can als chse t use public transprtatin r bicycles instead f private cars.

The mment my feet left the grund, time seemed t slw. I felt the spring f the track beneath me, the air rushing past my face. My eyes stayed lcked n the bar, but instead f fear, I felt a strange calm. There was nly Dad's vice-clear, steady and alive. “Bend at the hips, Lena. Let the wrld fall away.” My right leg swung up, then my left fllwed in a smth arc. Fr a heartbeat, I hung in the air-and then I was rlling nt the mat. The bar trembled but stayed in place. The crwd explded int cheers. I lay there, staring at the sky, tears mixing with sweat. I had dne it.
At the award ceremny the next day, Cach handed me a small, aged ntebk. As I flipped thrugh the pages, my breath caught -Inside were my father’s handwritten training ntes, filled with tips and sketches f jumping techniques. On the last page, he had written: “T my Lena-smeday, yu’ll fly higher than I ever did.” Tears spilled nt the paper as I clutched the ntebk t my chest, feeling his presence strnger than ever. “He’d be prud,” Cach said sftly. I ndded, knwing this was just the beginning.

Hi, everyne. I was s happy t tell yu abut my remarkable year, which I’d describe as a grand adventure. It’s tricky t knw where t start, s I think I’ll just begin at the very beginning. That was when my dad decided t take ur family n a trip arund the wrld. He started planning it last January. but we didn’t leave until July, after my exams in June. During my gap year, I wanted t keep my mind engaged. s Miss Barnes, my ld gegraphy teacher, and Mr. Green frm my amazing maths classes, kept in tuch with me and prvided plenty f assignments. My dad wanted t give us experience f things yu can’t get frm bks r TV prgrammes. Yu knw, things like the amazing smells cming frm the Indian street fd markets r the breathtaking light yu encunter in deserts. He was right. In the Sahara it was amazing! And the real experience f meeting and making friends with peple frm diverse cultures was invaluable.
Sme peple might argue that it wasn’t a gd idea fr my parents t take us ut f schl fr a year. But I think it was a wnderful pprtunity. Having cnnectins in all thse cuntries has been incredibly enriching. Travelling is a great thing, and I hpe yu all have the chance t d a lt t.
