Petry can mve suls and thrum(敲打)hearts: why wuldn’t we teach ur children abut it?
Accrding t a new survey by the Centre fr Literacy in Primary Educatin, schls are facing significant bstacles in teaching petry in the classrm. As smene wh has wrked with many students and spken at numerus teacher cnferences, I can cnfirm that fitting petry int the schl day can be a challenge.
It’s unfrtunate that petry is ften frgtten until we need it, such as at weddings and funerals. Hwever, we all knw the pwer f petry t speak t smething deep within us. My memries f petry in the classrm are f analyzing Sylvia Plath’s wrk, but analyzing alne can discnnect us frm ur enjyment f reading a gd pem r a pet that speaks t us, which misses the pint.
I used t g int schls t help get yung peple excited abut petry, and I learned that the best way t d this was by sharing the jy I feel thrugh writing it. Engaging in free-write exercises reveals a deeper appreciatin fr pets like Jack Keruac and William Burrughs. By shwing children that their thughts and feelings are wrthy f pems, yu give them a seat at the table.
Publishers are prducing mre petry fr a range f ages, making this an exciting time t renew ur fcus n petry in the classrm. Despite the challenges, there is great wrk being dne by sme brilliant teachers, but mre resurces and supprt are needed.
As Waterstnes Children’s Laureate(桂冠)(2022-2024), I have made it a large part f my tenure(任期)t prmte petry. My Petry Prmpts vides g live n the BkTrust website every Mnday mrning, ffering students a fun way t start a pem. By the time my tenure is ver, there will be at least 80 f these free petry resurces fr teachers t use in the classrm t get children writing and appreciating petry. There are als ther resurces available, such as activities, teacher’s kits; and recrded pems that anyne can find nline.
This is an exciting time fr petry, and I hpe that with better resurces and awareness f hw it can be taught, petry can gain its rightful place as a staple in all ur classrms. It is a way t shw children hw their wrds, their wrlds, their thughts, and their pinins have the pwer t mve suls and thrum hearts.
41. What can we learn abut petry frm the passage?
A. Petry is ften frgtten n varius ccasins, even at weddings and funerals.

Making decisins under uncertainty is a prblem we all face. Imagine yu are lking fr a parking spt at a crwded event. Yu find ne far frm yur destinatin. D yu decide t take it, r invest mre time int hunting fr a better spt which may r may nt exist?
Yu might reslve this decisin by “budgeting”: limiting the resurces (time) yu will spend lking fr a better ptin. This strategy allws us t cut ur lsses when things dn’t turn ut as we hped. In ur research, we shw hw weaver ants (织工蚁) — much like humans — budget their investment int a task with an uncertain payff.
Weaver ants link their bdies tgether t frm bridge-like structures called “hanging chains”, which they use fr crssing gaps they encunter. Building a chain cmes at a cst t the clny (蚁群). Ants in the chain can’t participate in imprtant clny tasks such as defending the nest and searching fr fd. The cst f the chain is prprtinal (成比例) t its length: lnger chains are mre cstly, as they keep mre ants ccupied.
Chains prvide a majr benefit t: they allw ants t explre areas that wuld therwise be inaccessible which may ffer fd surces t the clny. Whether an area cntains a prfitable resurce, hwever, is unknwn t the ants. This means the clny must invest capital (a number f ants) int frming a chain which may r may nt pay ff.
We expected ants wuld stp frming a chain when the gap t be bridged became t tall, as the cst wuld becme t great. We initially challenged ants t bridge vertical gaps f 25mm, 35mm and 50mm in height. Ants culd cmfrtably frm chains within this range, which allwed us t precisely determine the rules they use t build chains. We fund ants decide hw lng t stay in a chain by visually assessing their distance frm the grund belw. The clser t the grund, the lnger an ant remains in the chain.
Can this predict a distance beynd which ants stp frming chains? We answered this questin using a mathematical mdel, which predicted ants shuld stp frming chains when the pap is taller than 89mm. We challenged ants t frm chains ver gaps f 110mm, well beynd the distance predicted by ur mdel. As expected, the ants never frmed chains ver these gaps.
Similar t when we set urselves a time limit fr finding parking, ants set a distance limit by budgeting befre giving up.
45. Accrding t the passage, what des the wrd “investment” refer t in Paragraph 2?
A. Time spent in building chains.
B. Number f ants ccupied in wrk.
C. Curage t explre the unknwn bravely.
D. Resurces fr gathering fd.
46. What d we knw abut hanging chains?
A. Ants prefer shrt chains fr efficiency.
B. Ants can’t build chains ver large gaps.
C. The building f chains requires a sacrifice f its clny wrk.
D. Ants make use f chains nly in the cases f emergency.
47. What message des paragraph 4 cnvey mainly?
A. The benefits f chains fr weaver ants utweigh their csts.
B. Chains are the nly way fr weaver ants t access fd surces.
C. Chains allw ants t access areas where fd is guaranteed t be fund.
D. Ants will still invest in frming chains, thugh uncertainly prfitable.
48. In what way are ants similar t humans?
A. They are very gd at prblem-slving.
B. They budget resurces when making decisins.
C. They seek similar fd surces.
D. They ften wrk alne in tasks.
49. What can be cncluded frm the passage?
A. Ants act randmly when making decisins.
B. Ants fllw strict rules withut flexibility.
C. Ants make decisins based n visual assessment.
D. Ants are less efficient than humans.
50. What culd be the best title fr the passage?

Ecnmists tend t be big fans f educatin. Alfred Marshall, writing in 1873, hped that educatin wuld help erase the “distinctin between wrking men and gentlemen”. Gary Becker f the University f Chicag reimagined educatin as an investment in “human capital” that wuld prduce returns in the market similar t ther assets.
But ecnmics can als be severely critical f schling. In The Scial Limits t Grwth, a bk published in 1976, Fred Hirsch pinted ut that educatin is ften “psitinal” in nature. What matters is nt nly hw much yu have, but whether yu have mre than the next persn. An unhappy cnsequence is that ne family’s expenses f schling raise the bar fr everyne else. Families are drawn, ften uncnsciusly, int educatinal arms races. They spend mney and time n after-schl tutring r extra-curricular activities in the expectatin that it will imprve their child’s psitin in the queue fr advancement. But they quickly discver that everyne else is ding the same, leaving them in the same psitin as befre. “If everyne stands n tipte, n ne sees better,” Hirsch nted.
These arms races are ften particularly intense in East Asia. The gvernment f Suth Krea has tried t ease the races. Fr example, it impsed a 10 p.m. curfew (宵禁) n cramming schls (补习学校). Inspectrs wuld lk fr schls with their lights n. Will these measures wrk? It is almst impssible t stp families hiring private tutrs t teach their children in their wn hmes.
The arms race is ntably less intense in parts f Eurpe. In Nrway and Sweden parents shw little demand fr tutring-the wealthy even less than thers, accrding t Steve Enrich f the University f Ptsdam. And vereducatin is less cmmn in Germany and ther cuntries that srt children early int academic r vcatinal (职业的) schls, with little mbility between the tw. Fr better r wrse, that remves large numbers f students frm the race fr mre academic hnrs.
Germany’s practice f placing children n different tracks at an early age als invites an interesting thught experiment. What if cllege entrance tests were held earlier in a pupil’s career? If these exams truly test the knwledge required fr university, they must be held just befre university starts. But if such tests mstly serve as filters, selecting better students frm wrse, they need nt be held s late. An earlier test wuld save families a year r tw f cstly cramming, shrtening “the bstacle jurney”, as Hirsch put it, withut much changing the results.
51. What viewpint is Gary Becker likely t agree with accrding t Paragraph 1?
A. Educatin generates financial returns in the market.
B. Educatin leads t the widening f class difference.
C. Educatin plays a vital rle in a persn’s grwth.
D. Educatin prmtes prgress tward scial equality.
52. Why d we say that ne family’s expenses f schling raise the bar fr everyne else?
A. Because it imprves standards, making thers fllw suit.
B. Because it sets up barriers, making it harder fr thers t reach the same level.
C. Because it prvides a mdel, frcing thers t spend even mre.
D. Because it limits the range f educatinal resurces, frcing thers t give up.
53. Why des the authr mentin East Asia and parts f Eurpe?
A. T assess educatinal cmpetitiveness acrss regins.
B. T highlight the impact f private tutring n educatin.
C. T cntrast educatinal arms races in different areas.
D. T analyze strategies fr lessening academic pressure.
54. What is the purpse f writing the article?

B. T discuss the ecnmic impact n educatin amng different cuntries.
C. T explre the nature and cnsequences f educatin cmpetitin.
D T cmpare educatinal practices between East Asia and Eurpe.
55. What can be inferred abut the authr’s attitude twards the vereducatin issue?

Almst every driver in the wrld will spend part f their life waiting at traffic lights. In a lifetime, ne might wait at red lights fr cuntless hurs, but few drivers ever wnder wh invented these crucial devices.
The first traffic light was installed in 1868 in Lndn, utside the British Huses f Parliament. It was manually perated and designed by J.P Knight, a railway engineer, t help manage the grwing number f hrse-drawn carriages. Unfrtunately, this first mdel used gas lights, which eventually led t an explsin, injuring the fficer perating it. After that incident, traffic lights were largely frgtten until cars began t crwd the streets f majr cities.
The mdem, electric traffic light was invented in 1923 by Garrett Mrgan, an African American inventr. Mrgan was an innvatr wh saw the need fr safer rads. He nticed that vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians ften cllided because there was n rganized system t manage street intersectins. T slve this prblem, Mrgan develped a device with three psitins: stp, g, and a third that allwed time fr drivers t stp befre the light turned red. This simple innvatin reduced the number f accidents and made intersectins safer fr everyne.
When Mrgan intrduced his inventin, the initial receptin was mixed. Drivers were used t chatic intersectins and many didn’t understand why they shuld bey a light instead f just ging when they felt it was safe. Hwever, Mrgan was persistent. He demnstrated hw his traffic signal culd save lives, and sn, cities acrss the United States began t adpt his system.
Since then, the traffic light has becme an essential part f rad safety wrldwide. Tday’s lights use advanced sensrs and technlgy t help manage traffic flw mre efficiently. They als include pedestrian signals and cuntdwn timers t imprve safety fr thse n ft.

Chains prvide a majr benefit t: they allw ants t explre areas that wuld therwise be inaccessible, which may ffer fd surces t the clny.

根据第三段中的“Building a chain cmes at a cst t the clny(蚁群). Ants in the chain can’t participate in imprtant clny tasks such as defending the nest and searching fr fd. The cst f the chain is prprtinal (成比例) t its length: lnger chains are mre cstly, as they keep mre ants ccupied.(构建链条对蚁群来说是有代价的。链条中的蚂蚁无法参与保卫巢穴或寻找食物等重要的蚁群任务。链条的代价与其长度成比例:链条越长,代价越高,因为需要更多的蚂蚁参与其中。)”及第四段中“Whether an area cntains a prfitable resurce, hwever, is unknwn t the ants. This means the clny must invest capital (a number f ants) int frming a chain which may r may nt pay ff.(然而,一个区域是否存在可获取的有益资源,蚂蚁们对此并不知晓。这就意味着蚁群必须投入资本(一定数量的蚂蚁)来形成一条链条,而这条链条可能会带来回报,也可能不会。)”可知,构建链条对蚁群来说是有代价的,这个代价与参与链条的蚂蚁数量成正比,由此可知,“投资”指的是参与构建链条的蚂蚁数量,也就是被占用在这项工作中的蚂蚁数量,因为它们牺牲了其他任务,比如防御和觅食。故选B项。
【46题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Weaver ants link their bdies tgether t frm bridge-like structures called “hanging chains”, which they use fr crssing gaps they encunter. Building a chain cmes at a cst t the clny (蚁群). Ants in the chain can’t participate in imprtant clny tasks such as defending the nest and searching fr fd. (织工蚁将它们的身体连接在一起,形成被称为“悬挂链”的桥状结构,用于跨越它们遇到的缝隙。构建链条对蚁群来说是有代价的。链条中的蚂蚁无法参与保卫巢穴或寻找食物等重要的蚁群任务。)”可知,参与链条的蚂蚁无法执行其他重要的蚁群任务,比如保卫巢穴或寻找食物,这表明构建链条是以牺牲其他工作为代价的。故选C项。
【47题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中的“Whether an area cntains a prfitable resurce, hwever, is unknwn t the ants. This means the clny must invest capital (a number f ants) int frming a chain which may r may nt pay ff.(然而,一个区域是否存在可获取的有益资源,蚂蚁们对此并不知晓。这就意味着蚁群必须投入资本(一定数量的蚂蚁)来形成一条链条,而这条链条可能会带来回报,也可能不会)”可知,本段主要传达的信息是,即使不确定是否能获得收益,蚂蚁还是会投入资源构建链条。故选D项。
【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Yu might reslve this decisin by “budgeting”: limiting the resurces (time) yu will spend lking fr a better ptin. In ur research, we shw hw weaver ants (织工蚁) — much like humans — budget their investment int a task with an uncertain payff.(你或许可以通过 “预算规划” 来做出这个决定:限制你在寻找更好选择上所花费的资源(时间)。这种策略能让我们在事情的结果并非如我们所愿时减少损失。在我们的研究中,我们展示了织工蚁是如何像人类一样,对投入到一项结果不确定的任务中的资源进行预算规划的。)”以及尾段中的“Similar t when we set urselves a time limit fr finding parking, ants set a distance limit by budgeting befre giving up.(与我们为自己设定寻找停车位的时间限制类似,蚂蚁在放弃之前会通过预算设定一个距离限制。)”
根据尾段中的“Similar t when we set urselves a time limit fr finding parking, ants set a distance limit by budgeting befre giving up. (与我们为自己设定寻找停车位的时间限制类似,蚂蚁在放弃之前会通过预算设定一个距离限制。)”以及倒数第三段中的“We fund ants decide hw lng t stay in a chain by visually assessing their distance frm the grund belw. The clser t the grund, the lnger an ant remains in the chain.(我们发现,蚂蚁通过视觉评估它们与地面的距离来决定在链条中停留多久。距离地面越近,蚂蚁在链条中停留的时间就越长。)”可知,蚂蚁通过视觉评估与地面的距离来决定在链条中停留多久,由此推知,它们的决策基于视觉线索。故选C项。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。根据尾段中的“Similar t when we set urselves a time limit fr finding parking, ants set a distance limit by budgeting befre giving up.

The evlutin f the traffic light shws hw simple ideas can transfrm int vital tls fr daily life. Garrett Mrgan’s inventin has nt nly made rads safer but has als shaped hw we navigate ur cities tday.
