I was brn with perfect hearing. When I was five, I started getting ear infectins but my parents culdn’t affrd the treatment. Over time, my hearing drpped t 20 percent, where it is tday.
There was always music n in my huse in my childhd. I lved listening t Metallica, and Michael Jacksn. My dad was a DJ, s he played all music. Fr my 18th birthday, my dad asked me t deejay at the restaurant he wned. I was hked. I desired t learn mre. I e-mailed DJ Shiftee, a distinguished New Yrk City DJ, when I was 25: “I knw yu like a challenge. Hw abut teaching a deaf persn t deejay?” He wrte back the next day: “Challenge accepted.” He tutred me twice a week fr tw years, helping me develp crrect technique. I practiced fur hurs a day.
Nw when I’m perfrming muscle memry takes ver. When I started, I wuldn’t tell the club managers that I was deaf. I wuld just shw up, intrduce myself, and start playing music. At the end f the night, smene wuld say, “Oh, here’s the check.” And I’d say, “What? Oh, I can’t hear.” They were always s astnished. Smetimes I wuld bring dctr’s ntes because they wuldn’t believe me. It was reassurance that they were giving me pprtunities t perfrm because I was brilliant, nt ut f sympathy. Eventually peple started calling me “that deaf DJ,” and the name stuck.
What fascinates me abut deejaying is the creativity. I use sftware that turns the music int lines f clr n a cmputer screen. I’m visually hearing the music. The next time yu g dancing, cver yur ears, and yu’ll “see” the music. Music is nt all abut hearing. I g t elementary schls fr the deaf and talk t them abut mtivatin and believing in themselves. I tell them, “Just chase yur dreams. I’m a deaf DJ, s why nt?”
      24. What inspired “my” passin fr being a DJ?

Patricia Cwell, a prfessr at the University f Sheffield in the United Kingdm, stresses that thugh left-handedness is referred t as “atypical” frm time t time, there’s n need fr cncern.
“It’s nt anything negative as such. It’s just different frm the majrity,” Cwell said. “I think the thing that’s really imprtant is that it is a very cnstant bilgical variatin within nrmal develpment.”
Cwel studies handednes and brain lateralizatin (偏侧性): hw different abilities like language r visual prcessing are rganized within the brain. “If smene is left-handed, their brain rganizatin is ging t be different than smene wh is right-handed,” Cwell said.
Befre the age f the laptp-filed lecture hall, Cwell wuld sit at the frnt f the rm and cunt the number f lefties in her classes while students cmpleted five-minute thught experiments. Althugh the small sample size caused sme variatin frm class t class, arund 1 in 10 students were left-handed. This distributin is present in the general ppulatin as well — it is thught that arund 10% f peple arund the wrld are left-handed. “It is pretty fixed,” Cwell said. “Yu can always find a few in a big grup.”
And there’s sme evidence that the distributin f handedness has lasted fr thusands f years, with right-handers in the strng majrity and left-handers cmprising a mere part. T study examples f handedness in histry, French researchers examined Western Eurpean cave artwrk dating back 10,000 t 30,000 years. Ancient artists wuld hld their nn-dminant hands against a rck wall and use their dminant hand t blw clred dust nt it using a blwing tube, creating a negative image f their hand n the rck. The distributin f handedness fund in cave art is cnsistent with what we see tday.
Rel Willems is a senir researcher at the Dnders Institute fr Brain Cgnitin and Behaviur in the Netherlands. “Other animals als tend t have a handedness preference,” Willems said. “But there is n ther species (ther than humans) that seems at the ppulatin level t be s strngly biased (偏见的) .”
      28. What’s Patricia Cwell’s view n left-handedness?
      A. It is physically unacceptable.B. It is nly natural and nrmal.
      C. It is an issue f great imprtance.D. It may bring negative cnsequences.
      29. Hw did Cwell get data fr her research n handedness?
      A. By cunting the lefties in class.B. By cnducting experiments in the lab.
      C. By interviewing students nline.D. By ding the sampling with a laptp.
      30. What des the underlined wrd “It” in paragraph 4 refer t?
      A. The number f right-handers.B. The increasing ppulatin.
      C. The percentage f left-handers.D. The sample size in a grup.
      31. Why did French researchers study Western Eurpean cave artwrk?
      A. T shw the advantages f right-handers.
      B. T prve the existence f left-handedness.
      C. T find ther animals’ handedness preferences.
      D. T learn abut the distributin f handedness in histry.
      D
Casting blame is natural: it is tempting t fault smene else fr a mistake rather than taking respnsibility yurself. But blame is als harmful. It makes it less likely that peple will wn up t mistakes, and thus less likely that rganizatins can learn frm them. Research published in 2015 suggests that firms whse managers pinted t external factrs t explain their failings underperfrmed cmpanies that blamed themselves.
Blame culture can spread like a virus. Just as children fear mm and dad’s punishment if they admit t wrngding, in a blaming envirnment, emplyees are afraid f criticism and punishment if they acknwledge making a mistake at wrk. Blame culture asks, “Wh drpped the ball?” instead f “Where did ur systems and prcesses fail?” The fcus is n the individuals, nt the prcesses. It’s much easier t pint fingers at a persn r department instead f ding the harder, but the mre beneficial, exercise f fixing the rt cause, s the prblem des nt happen again.
The N Blame Culture was intrduced t make sure errrs and deficiencies (缺陷) were highlighted by emplyees as early as pssible. It riginated in rganizatins where tiny errrs can have catastrphic cnsequences: These are knwn as high reliability rganizatins (HROs) and include hspitals, submarines and airlines. Because errrs can be s disastrus in these rganizatins, it’s dangerus t perate in an envirnment where emplyees dn’t feel able t reprt errrs that have been made r raise cncerns abut that deficiencies may turn int future errrs. The N Blame Culture maximizes accuntability because all cntributins t the event ccurring are identified and reviewed fr pssible change and imprvement.
The Natinal Transprtatin Safety Bard (NTSB), which supervises air traffic acrss the United States, makes it clear that its rle is nt t assign blame r liability but t find ut what went wrng and t issue recmmendatins t avid a repeat. The prud recrd f the airline industry in reducing accidents partly reflects n-blame prcesses fr investigating crashes and clse calls. The mtive t learn frm errrs als exists when the risks are lwer. That is why sftware engineers and develpers rutinely investigate what went wrng if a website crashes r ‘a server ges dwn.
There is an bvius wrry abut embracing blamelessness. What if the website keeps crashing and the same persn is at fault? Smetimes, after all, blame is deserved. The idea f the “just culture”, a framewrk develped in the 1990s by James Reasn, a psychlgist, addresses the cncern that the incmpetent and the malevlent (恶意的) will be let ff the hk. The line that Britain’s aviatin regulatr draws between hnest errrs and the ther srt is a gd starting-pint It prmises a culture in which peple “are nt punished fr actins r decisins taken by them that are cmmensurate with their experience and training”. That narrws rm fr blame but des nt remve it entirely.
      32. Accrding t the research published in 2015, cmpanies that ________ had better perfrmance.
      A. blamed external factrsB. wned up t mistakes
      C. cnducted investigatinsD. admitted failures
      33. Accrding t the passage, the N Blame Culture ________.
      A. encurages the early disclsure f errrs
      B. nly exists in high reliability rganizatins
      C. enables peple t shift the blame nt thers
      D. prevents rganizatins t learn frm errrs
      34. What is the majr cncern abut embracing blamelessness accrding t the passage?
      A. Inncent peple might take the blame by admitting their failure.
      B. Being blamed fr mistakes can destry trust in emplyees.
      C. The line between hnest errrs and the ther srt is nt clear.
      D. Peple wn’t learn their lessns if they aren’t blamed fr failures.
      35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
      A. Why We Fail t Learn frm Our Own Mistakes
      B. Hw t Avid Disastrus Errrs in Organizatins
      C. Why We Shuld Stp the Blame Game at Wrk
      D. Hw t Deal with Wrkplace Blame Culture

      D. prevents rganizatins t learn frm errrs
