Nw 14-year-ld Sirish Subash frm Gergia has wn the 2024 3M Yung Scientist Challenge fr develping an AI-based handheld tl that is very accurate in finding pesticide residues (残留物).
The ninth grader at the Gwinnett Schl f Mathematics, Science, and Technlgy in Snellville has received the title “America’s Tp Yung Scientist”, accrding t a press release frm the 3M Cmpany.
Nw in its 17th year, the challenge supprts middle schl students t think creatively and apply STEM principles t discver real-wrld slutins. When the finalists were chsen, they were paired with a 3M scientist wh guided them ver the summer t help transfrm their ideas frm just cncepts int mdels. Sirish spent fur mnths cmpeting against nine ther finalists and secured his win at the final challenge events at 3M’s glbal headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesta.
Sirish’s jurney t winning the award came frm watching his mther wash vegetables and fruits every day and cautin him t always d s. He wndered whether washing actually made a difference.
Since 70 percent f prduce in the US has pestiide residues that are linked t illnesses like cancer and Alzheimer’s, it’s very imprtant t knw if the fruits and vegetables are safe t eat. That’s what PestiSCAND is designed t d. The device wrks by shining light n the surface f the prduce and measuring the wavelengths that bunce back. Sirish has tested the device n mre than 12,000 fd samples including strawberries, apples, and tmates.
PestiSCAND uses a sensr and an AI-based prcessr t achieve an accuracy f ver 85 percent. Sirish aims at making this technlgy widely accessible s that cnsumers will be able t make safe fd chices. But he still believes peple shuld wash their prduce anyway. He plans t use the $25,000 prize frm the cmpetitin t help fund his educatinal gal f attending MIT.

Other researchers have been sitting n the fence. In 2019, Jeff Hanceck, funding directr f the Scial Media Lab at Stanfrd University, and his clleagues cmpleted an analysis f 226 scientific papers dating back t 2006. They cncluded that scial media was assciated with nt nly a slight increase in depressin and anxiety but als imprvements in feelings f belnging and cnnectedness.
Sme recent studies have attempted t figure ut the link between scial media and mental health, asking, fr instance, whether scial media use is causing depressin r whether peple are being mre active n scial media because they’re depressed. In an attempt t present evidence, Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy ecnmist Alexey Makarin and tw f his clleagues cnducted mental health surveys taken by cllege students acrss the cuntry. Their study, published in 2022, fund that rcketing rates f depressin and anxiety fllwed Facebk’s arrival. The Aurra Brealis, als knwn as the Nrthern Lights, is a natural phenmenn that has fascinated humans fr centuries. These clrful displays in the night sky are primarily visible in the plar regins, particularly in cuntries like Nrway, Canada, and Iceland. The lights are caused by slar particles (粒子) interacting with the Earth’s magnetic (磁的) field and atmsphere. When charged particles frm the sun crash with gases in the Earth’s atmsphere, they release energy in the frm f light. This prcess is knwn as inizatin.
The clrs f the Aurra Brealis can vary greatly. Green is the mst cmmn clr, prduced when slar particles interact with O₂ at lwer altitudes (海拔). Red aurras are rarer and ccur when particles interact with O₂ at much higher altitudes. Blue and purple aurras are even rarer and are caused by interactins with N2.
Scientists have been studying the Aurra Brealis fr many years t understand its causes and effects. One interesting finding is that the aurras can affect radi cmmunicatins and pwer supply. During strng slar strms, the increased activity f slar particles can cause disruptins in these systems. This is because the electrmagnetic fields created by the aurras can disturb the signals used by these technlgies.
Despite the ptential fr disturbance, the beauty f the Aurra Brealis cntinues t attract turists frm arund the wrld. Many peple travel t remte lcatins in the plar regins t witness this natural wnder. Sme cmpanies even ffer special turs and packages fr aurra viewing. These turs ften include activities like dg sledding and snwmbiling. The experience f seeing the Nrthern Lights is ften described as magical and unfrgettable.
Hwever predicting the exact timing and lcatin f the Aurra Brealis remains a challenge. Scientists use data frm satellites and grund-based bservatries t mnitr slar activity and make predictins. But the aurras are still smewhat unpredictable, which adds t their mystery and allure.
12. What causes the different clrs f the Aurra Brealis?
A. The strength f slar strms.
B. The different speeds f slar particles.
C. The substances that react and their lcatins.
D. The changes in the Earth’s magnetic field strength.
13. What can be inferred abut the Aurra Brealis?
A. It prmtes the develpment f mdern technlgy.
B. It brings challenges t the technlgical systems.
C. It has a significant impact n climate change.
D. It imprves the accuracy f satellite signals.
14. What des the underlined wrd “allure” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
A. Threat.B. Frequency.C. Cmplexity.D. Attractin.
