Nearly every natinal park, and many state and cunty parks and private facilities, ffer drive-up campgrunds with restrms, ptable water, fire rings r pits, and maybe even ht shwers. S there are lts f chices.
The dwnside f car camping is the fact that these campgrunds are ften packed with ther campers. Nt a lt f privacy, they can be nisy, and pssibly hinder yur quest f cmmuning with nature.
      Backpacking
N vehicle required; just yur feet and a gd pair f hiking bts r shes t get yu t the next vernight spt. A multi-day hiking trip is withut dubt the mst immersive way t experience the great utdrs.

      B
If yu ask 100 peple what subjects they wish they had been taught in schl, there is a chance that the vast majrity f them will cmplain abut the lack f persnal finance educatin. In my case, I did learn a bit abut financing while in schl — just nt in the classrm. One f my earliest lessns n the basics f budgeting came frm an unlikely surce: the cafeteria.
My lunch budget was a set amunt each week. Withut a plan, it wuld be all t easy t blw thrugh the budget lng befre meeting all expenses. Therefre, my very first budgeting lessn was t make a budget well. A bit f simple arithmetic (算术) helped me determine exactly hw much mney I culd spend each day if I wanted t actually have lunch all week.
Besides, my schl had relatively diverse lunch fferings. Yu culd nt nly get the cmmn ht schl lunch but als find many ther fds f varying attractins. As far as I was cncerned, what attracted me mst was the ice cream. Unfrtunately, I culdn’t blw my daily lunch budget n ice cream. And I’d already figured ut that splurging early in the week made fr a rugh time fr the rest f the week. Hence, I learned my secnd imprtant budgeting lessn: save fr a gal. Because f this lessn, when Friday rlled arund, I wuld have just enugh left ver fr a wnderful lunch and the highly desirable ice cream.
Nwadays, my budget is a bit mre cmplicated than the lunch budget in the past. Althugh I n lnger have t save my pennies fr a frzen treat, budgeting my mney tday uses the exact same skills I learned all thse years ag. Actually, whether yu’re budgeting fr schl lunches r credit card bills, the basics remain the same. And it’s never t early — r t late — t learn hw t make a prper budget.
      24. What can we learn abut the authr while she was in schl?
      A. She shwed n interest in financial affairs.
      B. She ften cmplained abut her schl subjects.
      C. She learned abut financing frm her wn experience.
      D. She eagerly expected t get persnal finance educatin.
      25. What did the authr prbably realize after eating at the cafeteria?
      A. She shuld plan her lunch budget carefully.
      B. Her health mattered mre than anything else.
      C. Her budget fr lunch was far frm reasnable.
      D. She shuld imprve her arithmetic as much as pssible.
      26. What des the underlined wrd “splurging” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Trying t save mney.B. Making a plan fr mney.
      C. Spending much mney freely.D. Being cncerned abut mney.
      27. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
      A. T intrduce sme lessns abut making a budget.
      B. T encurage peple t learn sme budgeting skills.
      C. T stress the significance f saving mney in ur life.
      D. T remind peple t pay attentin t their lunch budget.
      C
Earthquakes cannt be frecast, but engineers can prepare fr them. Seismic-islatin (地震隔离) systems built int the bases f certain buildings in high-risk areas, use cmplex structures f cncrete, rubber and metal t reduce quake damage by absrbing the grund’s hrizntal shaking.
But such adaptatins are expensive. Engineer Jian Zhang f the University f Califrnia, says building seismic islatin-system can increase cnstructin csts by up t 20 percent. Althugh these systems might save mre than they cst ver time, builders in sme regins may nt have the budget fr them at present.
A new seismic-islatin methd uses the physics f rlling t create a lwer-cst alternative with readily available materials: recycled tennis balls. “Everyne plays tennis, and they dn’t knw what t d with the tennis balls after each game,” says ETH Zürich seismic engineer Michalis Vassiliu.
Vassiliu’s team based its methd n an early frm f seismic-islatin that rlls a shaking building t a stp the way a skater in a half-pipe eventually cmes t rest. By separating a building frm the grund with a layer f spheres (球体), rlling islatin changes unstable hrizntal shaking int a gentle rcking mtin. This methd was used in 5,000-year-ld Peruvian pyramids, but tday builders favr expensive, standardized islatin systems.
Fr their mdern take n rlling seismic-islatin, the researchers injected cncrete-like mixes int hundreds f balls that had lst their bunce. They built an inexpensive mdel cnsisting f fur filled tennis balls sandwiched between tw cncrete slabs (厚板), and they fund that it withstd earthquake shaking while supprting eight kil newtns f frce per ball — abut twice what islatin systems might experience under ne-stry huses.
Zhang says that the wrk is wrthwhile and that such technlgy might serve an unmet need. But she ntes that the results are primary. Vassiliu agrees; next steps will mean creating and testing a larger mdel with hundreds f tennis balls at a research center in earthquake-prne Cuba — an example f a place where such systems culd make islatin practicable in rdinary cnstructin.
      28. Why d the engineers adpt recycled tennis balls?
      A. T imprve the perfrmance f tennis balls.
      B. T help deal with the tennis balls after matches.
      C. T simplify the cmplex structures f buildings.
      D. T cut the expense f seismic-islatin building.
      29. What effect culd the new methd achieve?
      A. Recycling useless tennis balls.B. Transfrming the shaking int a gentle ne.
      C. Withstanding earthquake shaking.D. Enabling a huse t supprt much mre frce.
      30. Which f the fllwing best describes Zhang’s attitude twards the new technlgy?
      A. Objective.B. Unclear.C. Dubtful.D. Apprving.
      31. What is the main idea f the text?
      A. Researchers are creating and testing mdels in Cuba.
      B. Engineers are explring ways f earthquake frecasts.
      C. A lw-cst design helps shaking buildings rll t a stp.
      D. Recycled tennis balls culd prtect buildings frm disasters.
      D
What’s the ldest meal yu’ve eaten? Maybe yu’ve had leftvers frm a few days ag. They prbably still tasted gd. But what if it wasn’t a few days ag, what if yu ate a 60-day ld stew (炖菜)? Or a 49-year-ld beef ndle sup?
Perpetual stew is a dish that is never taken ff the heat; it’s never finished. As prtins are served, new ingredients are put in the pt t replace them. One day’s stew becmes the basis f the fllwing days’ meals. This year, Annie Rauwerda’s 60-day stew became a scial media hit. One Bangkk restaurant claims t have been cking its beef ndle sup since the 1970s. It has been suggested that perpetual stew was a traditin in Medieval Eurpe when the effrt required t start a fire meant that they were left t burn all day, and a pt f stew was always simmering (煨) away n tp f it. One New Yrk Times article tells us abut a stew in Nrmandy that was kept cking fr 300 years.
This traditin may date back t the Middle Ages, but thankfully, ur understanding f fd hygiene (卫生) has develped since then. In a wrld where fd is ften thrwn away nce it reaches its use-by date, many peple have asked hw safe perpetual stew can actually be. Experts are divided, sme maintain that as lng as the stew is kept bubbling away at a temperature t high fr bacteria t survive, it shuld be safe. Others suggest that meat can becme dangerus if it’s left in the stew fr t lng. Cncerns have als been raised that sme vegetables, such as ptates, r thse cntaining nitrates (硝酸盐), culd becme mre harmful the mre they are reheated. Advcates f slw cking believe that the best fd takes time, but even they may be surprised by a mnths r years-ld perpetual stew.
      32. What is the key feature f perpetual stew?
      A. Ingredient.B. Taste.C. Time.D. Safety.
      33. Hw is paragraph 2 develped?
      A. By describing prcess.B. By making cmparisn.
      C. By fllwing time rder.D. By ffering sme examples.
      34. What is the authr’s attitude twards perpetual stew?
      A. Indifferent.B. Neutral.C. Negative.D. Favrable.
      35. What is the best title f the text?
      A. The Rise f Perpetual Stew.B. The Histry f Perpetual Stew.
      C. Perpetual Stew: Never Catching n.D. Perpetual Stew: Decades in the Making.

That day, I was ging t skate a clean freestyle prgram fr the first time in a year. I determined t land the axel (前外一周半跳) in cmpetitin.
“I can make it!” I thught as I skated t the center ice. When my music sunded, I started my prgram with a circular step and a bright smile, fllwed by a beautiful cmbinatin spin. Flying camel, sit spin, layback spin. Perfectin. The jump! The axel!
I culd d it when I practiced ff-ice, but I’d nly landed it n-ice apprximately furteen times in my entire life. S I was a little nervus. I’d leave it ut if I culd, but my Olympic dreams depended n it. My cach, Geena, put it early in my prgram s I culd d it while my legs were nt tired. Taking a deep breath, “I can succeed!” I thught.
I was n the right back utside edge f my skate blade (冰刀), ready t turn frward and launch int the axel. My nerves were back, wrking against me. “I can d this!” I thught. I stepped int takeff and I did ... a waltz jump (半周跳). It is a jump I’d been ding since I was pretty yung. It is nly ne-half a rtatin (旋转) instead f the ne and ne-half that I need fr the axel.
I glimpsed Cach Geena’s questining eyebrw as I glided past the dr and imagined the disappinted lks n my parents’ faces. “It’s nt ver,” I reasned t myself, glancing int the bleachers (露天座位). “I’d just replace the next jump with the axel.”
Hwever, it didn’t wrk ut the way I’d hped. I fell, and I kept falling. Never ne t give up, I replaced every jump in my prgram with the axel, but I didn’t land ne. I spent s much time n the ice that it’s like I was making sure the ice was clean fr the next skater. The tw minutes, fifteen secnds f my prgram felt like an age. By the time I was dne, my dress was saked thrugh and I was seven secnds behind my music, s I finished skating t silence.
