and small. I’d ften tie his shes r prepare anther glass f water fr him. My mm
saw my larger size and strng bdy as a sign that I was t be a kind f guardian angel
fr Brian. Hwever, that was nt the case.
One day ur schl spnsred a pumpkin-carving cntest. First prize was $100,
and I knew just hw I wuld spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying t
wn. S I decided the first-place bnus definitely had t land in my pcket.
When I had t carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked ut, it dawned n me that
with my big clumsy fingers I’d surely screw it up. I thught f Brian’s smaller, delicate
hands and knew he was the man fr the jb. I immediately begged Brian.
Unexpectedly, he asked fr a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly ding the math in my
head, I figured ut even if I split the first prize, I’d still have enugh cash fr the
game. S I gave in t Brian’s demands. With skillful hands, Brian carved the perfect
face, and nw we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in secnd. Unfrtunately, secnd
prize was nly $50, and I needed every penny f that t buy the game. The day f
the awards ceremny, the principal handed ver the mney t me because Brian
was hme, sick with a cld.
If he really wanted t win, he wuld have been here tday, I thught t myself,
justifying stealing the cash frm under pr Brian’s runny nse. With hardly a
thught, I ran t the stre and bught my dream game. That night when Brian asked
if we had wn, I denied, afraid t lk int his eyes.
The whle thing was never mentined again until the day when Brian was
packing fr cllege. I played my usual rle in helping him pack when I came acrss an
ld album filled with phts he had taken as the schl phtgrapher.

文中 “I was enjying the
phts when ne caught my eye.”
“But what made my heart skip a beat was the small
nte Brian had written n the back.”
      3. a lump in ne's thrat:
“I stared at the wrds, feeling a lump frm in my
      thrat.”
“Memries f all the times
I had been less than kind t him flded my mind...”
      5. hit sb. like a tn f bricks:使某人深受打击。“His wrds hit me
      like a tn f bricks.”
“I put dwn the album and walked ver t
      him...”
      7. wrap sb. in a hug:紧紧拥抱某人。“wrapping him in a tight hug”
I was enjying the phts when ne
caught my eye.”
Yu actually knew and didn’t say anything?’ I was
      shcked.” Brian
