In a psychlgically safe envirnment, there’s a sense f shared respnsibility when things g wrng and mistakes are generally seen as a learning pprtunity. Team members grw t trust ne anther; there’s a spirit f penness and peple are cmfrtable asking fr help when they need it. Research shws that this has benefits fr peple’s jb satisfactin and cmmitment.
Yur ability t prmte a psychlgically safe culture will depend partly n yur rle in the grup. If yu’re in a leadership psitin, then yu have a great pprtunity t demnstrate the kind f behaviurs and attitudes that create a trusting and pen envirnment. Yu culd als invite thers t share their past experiences in a similar way r bring this same apprach t prject reviews, asking what went well and what culd have gne better. Cmpared t eager-t-please dgs, cats are ften seen as unemtinal, inexpressive animals. Hwever, cat-lving scientists have been wrking t verturn this bad name. Accrding t a new study, cats might be mre expressive than yu think and are able t pull almst 300 distinct faces.
This discvery was made by Lauren Sctt and Brittany Flrkiewicz at the University f Califrnia in Ls Angeles, US. Frm June t August 2021, Sctt spent time filming 54 cats at a cat café, where custmers can interact with friendly cats. In ttal, Sctt gathered 194 minutes f vide material, fcusing in particular n the faces that cats made t each ther. She then studied her films with Flrkiewicz, an expert in hw animals think and feel.
Tgether, the researchers fund that cats have 276 unique expressins. Each f these is made by cmbining fur f 26 different facial mvements, such as shifts in ear psitin, nse licks, whisker (胡须) and muth mvements. By cmparisn, humans have 44 distinct facial mvements, while dgs have 27. Of these 276 lks, 45 percent were cnsidered kind, while 37 percent were seen as aggressive (挑衅的). In general, Sctt and Flrkiewicz fund that cats wuld mve their ears and whiskers in anther cat's directin when they were being friendly, and away frm them when they were being unfriendly. An angry cat will flatten its ears and narrw its pupils.
“Interestingly, sme f the cats’ friendly expressins resemble thse made by peple, dgs, mnkeys and ther animals,” Sctt says, suggesting that these species may share “a cmmn play face”. In fact, it is because f pet wners that Sctt and Flrkiewicz think cats have picked up such a wide range f facial expressins. Wild cats are ften islated (孤独的) animals, but pet cats have had lts f interactins with humans.
Hwever, exactly what cats are trying t say with mst f their expressins is still a mystery. Sctt and Flrkiewicz hpe t slve this puzzle with mre research, which they believe has valuable real-wrld applicatins.
      12. What des the new study fcus n?
      A. Reasns fr cats’ bad name.B. The facial expressins f cats.
      C. The cat-human relatinship.D. Cats’ habits in diverse envirnments.
      13. Hw did the researchers cnduct their study?
      A. By analyzing recrdings.B. By cmbining data.
      C. By cmparing different animals.D. By interviewing pet wners.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “resemble” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Cme frm.B. Belng t.C. Lk like.D. G against.
      15. What might the authr cntinue t discuss?
      A. Hw cats learn expressins.B. Where the study limitatins lie.
      C. Hw cats interact with humans.D. Where the study can be put int use.
