Such a multicultural backgrund has certainly helped her stand ut in her present jb. Priscilla Ouchida’s “energy efficient” huse turned ut t be a hrrible dream. When she and her engineer husband married a few years ag, they built a $100,000 three-bedrm hme in Califrnia. Tightly sealed t prevent air leaks, the huse was equipped with small duble-paned windws and several ther energy-saving features. Prblems began as sn as the cuple mved in, hwever. The prblem itself isn’t new. “The indr envirnment was dirty lng befre energy cnservatin came alng,” says Mschandreas, a pllutin scientist at Gemet Technlgies in Maryland. “Energy cnservatin has tended t accentuate the situatin in sme cases.”
The prblem appears t be mre trublesme in newly cnstructed hmes rather than ld nes. Back in the days when energy was cheap, hme builders didn’t wrry much abut unsealed cracks. Because f such leaks, the air in an average hme was replaced by fresh utdr air abut nce an hur. As a result, the pllutants generated in mst husehlds seldm built up t dangerus levels.
