Well, apparently, Chinese engineers decided that a suspended highway running alng the middle f the river was nt nly cheaper t build, but mre efficient.
It turns ut that building a highway thrugh a cmplex muntainus landscape like Hubei’ s Xiangxi River Valley is harder than it sunds. It invlves digging miles f tunnels thrugh rck, relcating peple living by the edge f the river, and affecting the lcal plants and animals. Gay Ivey, prfessr f literacy and her research partner Peter Jhnstn have studied students’ mtivatins t read. They als have studied hw students react t reading yung adult literature.
Ivey said reading bks cnsidered “disturbing” by students was beneficial fr their learning and emtinal develpment. And parents als nticed a grwth in their children after they read the disturbing bks.
In ne f Ivey and Jhnstn’s studies, they spent a year in a middle schl. They asked eighth grade students in an English class t chse any bk they wanted t read. The teens were nt under any pressure frm teachers t finish the bk r t prduce any schlwrk abut the bk.
Many f the students chse t read bks that deal with difficult subjects like depressin. Sme f the bks students chse were nes that schls arund the cuntry have banned.
Students are drawn t bks that deal with trubling subjects. Instead f being harmed by such subjects, reading abut fictinal characters made them mre empathetic (感同身受的).
