In America,14% f children d nt get mre than ne meal a day, and many urban families live in fd deserts, where access t fresh fd is limited. Yn saw the need t address this issue and funded the Sustainable Hunger Initiative, fcusing n prviding healthy fd and educating cmmunities abut nutritin.

Humpback whales are knwn, amng ther things, fr their lengthy migratins. Much t the surprise f a grup f researchers, thugh, ne f these creatures seems t have brken a recrd. After being sptted in the Pacific Ocean ff Clmbia in 2017, a male whale ppped up near Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean in 2022, making it ne f the lngest and mst unusual whale migratins ever recrded fr an individual whale.
The tw sightings were reprted 8,106.4 miles apart. The distance is almst twice the typical migratin fr whales, wh travel in a nrth-suth pattern every year frm their feeding grunds in cler waters t their warmer breeding grunds. Instead, this particular male whale traveled in an east-west pattern frm ne breeding area t anther.
The researchers have tw theries as t what may have caused the whale t g n this lengthy jurney. The first has t d with climate change, as the abundance f the krill they feed n may have been damaged. The ther has t d with mating. Cnservatin effrts in the Indian Ocean have led t new thriving cmmunities f yung whales. There may have been heightening cmpetitin fr mates in the whale’s ld neighbrhd, inspiring it t lk fr a mating partner in anther area.
Ekaterina Kalashnikva, c-authr f the study, said the jurney was “truly impressive and unusual even fr this highly migratry species”. The researcher als shared that humpback whales navigate with remarkable precisin. And since this ne is a full-grwn whale, it’s unlikely he culd have simply gtten lst.
The finding was made pssible by Happy Whale, an bservatin platfrm where researchers and amateur whale watchers submit thusands f phtgraphs f the creatures they spt, helping scientists keep track f them. Using a technlgy similar t facial recgnitin, researchers can identify the whales by the patterns n their tails—an identifier s unique that has lng been cmpared t human fingerprints.
Ultimately, beynd the shck caused by the whale, these resurces will help scientists better understand whale behavir, especially in the face f challenging cnditins due t glbal warming.
8.What des the underlined phrase “ppped up” mean in paragraph 1?
A.Made a return.B.Became hard t ntice.

C.Their migratin distances are becming lnger.D.The fd surces fall shrt f their needs.
11.What des paragraph 5 mainly talk abut?
A.The imprtance f jint cnservatin effrts.
B.The unique tail patterns f humpback whales.
C.Happy Whale’s rle in tracking and studying humpback whales.

A new study uses artificial intelligence(AI) t determine the timing f a pediatric (儿科的) language milestne: Children are able t say smething nvel that they have nt heard befre by using a language rule. “A difficult prblem in describing language acquisitin(习得) is knwing when children g beynd their input t prduce nvel, structured utterances(话语)—that is t say, t achieve linguistic prductivity, the hallmark f human language,” wrte ne f the study’s researchers.
When d children g beynd imitating what they have heard and start prducing their wn riginal structured utterances? In ther wrds, at what mment d children attain linguistic prductivity? This questin is a challenging ne t answer scientifically as it requires knwing every utterance a child has encuntered. T slve this, the researchers used massive real-wrld behaviral data gained ver an extended perid f time and a cmplicated AI mdel t make sense f the data.
The behaviral data used cntains audi scripts f ver a millin autnmus utterances f 90-minute interactins between 64 English-learning children and their parents at hme gained every fur mnths during the ages f 14 mnths t 58 mnths. Frm this massive database f utterances, the team aimed t use AI mdels t determine the nset and develpment pathways f when the children started using determiner-nun cmbinatins in English, such as “a bk”, “the bk” and mre.
“Our behaviral data gave us a rich picture f when children begin t prductively cmbine determiners ‘a’ and ‘the’ with the same nun. On average, children begin t make prductive determiner-nun cmbinatins at 30 mnths ld, which is apprximately nine mnths after saying their first determiner,” wrte the researchers.
The researchers prved that they culd cmputatinally mdel the nset and pathways f linguistic prductivity with AI. As fr next steps, the researchers say that they can use the same mdel t understand the pssible cntributing factrs that lead t the different timing and rate f language prductivity in the future.
12.What’s the main gal f the new study?
A.T track the language acquisitin.
B.T knw when children get linguistic prductivity.
C.T intrduce the language milestne.
D.T analyze hw AI plays a rle in pediatric language.
13.What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A.The styles and quality f audi scripts.
B.The ways and theries f language acquisitin.
C.The surces and functins f behaviral data.
D.The effects and cnsequences f linguistic prductivity.
14.When d children prbably start speaking their first determiner?
A.At abut 30 mnths ld.B.At abut 21 mnths ld.
C.At abut 39 mnths ld.D.At abut 42 mnths ld.
15.What can we infer abut the AI mdel frm the last paragraph?
A.It can meet ptential research needs.B.It can predict language decline.
C.It can frecast ecnmic trends.D.It can imprve linguistic prductivity.
