A study published in Gelgy intrduces a new methd fr understanding earthquake behavir that culd transfrm hw we prepare fr these natural disasters. These marks, called “slickenlines”, wrk smewhat like tire marks at a crash scene, revealing the directin f mvement.
T understand hw these ancient marks culd help save lives, the research team turned t New Zealand’s Alpine Fault. The researchers fcused their investigatin n a fascinating sectin f the Alpine Fault knwn as an “earthquake gate”. This regin can either stp earthquakes in their tracks r allw them t cntinue their jurney, a decisin that has enrmus cnsequences. When earthquakes push thrugh this gate, they transfrm frm magnitude 7.5 events int far mre pwerful magnitude 8.0 earthquakes, dramatically increasing their ptential fr destructin.
The implicatins f this research reach far beynd New Zealand’s shres. “The scratches indicate the directin and rigin f a past earthquake, ptentially giving us clues abut where a future quake might start and where it will g. This is key fr Califrnia, where anticipating the directin f a quake n faults like San Andreas r San Jacint culd mean a mre accurate frecast f its impact,” Barth, UC Riverside gelgist and lead authr, ntes.
Understanding the directin f earthquake mvement isn’t just academic curisity, it culd prvide crucial extra minutes f warning time fr vulnerable ppulatins. Cnsider Ls Angeles: if a majr earthquake begins near the Saltn Sea and mves nrthward alng the San Andreas fault, it wuld direct intense energy tward the city. Hwever, this scenari culd als give residents abut a minute’s warning thrugh cellular alert systems — precius time that culd allw peple t take cver, stp medical prcedures, r shut dwn critical systems.

The tall, stny castlines f the nrtheast Pacific Ocean are much quieter than they were. Fllwing a punishing ceanic heat wave in the regin, the nisy seabirds that nce crwded the sea cliffs are nw greatly thinned, t a quarter f their frmer size in sme places. This sudden lss f millins f birds, and prbably many ther animals, may be the largest wildlife death event recrded in mdern times.
The stry begins in late 2014, when a vilent ceanic heat wave “Blb” parked itself ver the Pacific nrtheast, raising cean temperatures far abve nrmal fr almst tw years. It cked up an eclgical chain reactin, reducing phytplanktn (浮游植物) ppulatins and in turn the frage fish that seabirds like cmmn murres eat. In 2015 and 2016, the birds cllectively starved t death.
“We knew right away that it was a big disaster,” says Renner, a wildlife bilgist with U. S. Fish and Wildlife at the Alaska Maritime Natinal Wildlife Refuge in Hmer. “There were 62,000 carcasses that washed up n the beaches, all ver the Gulf f Alaska, all the way dwn t Califrnia. It was clearly a big deal, but we culdn’t really quantify the size f the death very well.”
The scale and speed f the seabird ppulatin cllapse is shcking, says Simn Tye, an eclgist at the University f Arkansas in Fayetteville wh wasn’t invlved with the research. “It was pretty heartbreaking.”
Tye and Renner bth pint ut that with cntinued climate warming, heat waves like the “Blb” are expected t ccur mre frequently. This culd endanger already vulnerable ppulatins f many animals that have yet t recver in an cean ecsystem affected by the previus heat wave.
While there’s little immediate human cntrl ver ceanic heat waves, Renner says the findings underscre the imprtance f ther cnservatin effrts fr seabirds. This may include remving invasive predatrs r ther species that - alngside climatic swings - create an additive stress n seabird ppulatins.
“The tp f the fd web ging away, I think that’s really imprtant,” Tye says. “It shuld be an minus (不祥的) thing fr everybdy.”
12. What happened abut a decade ag?
A. Millins f seabirds died f hunger.
B. Overfishing caused an eclgical chain reactin.
C. “Blb” came int being and disturbed the whle wrld.
D. Temperatures rse up t the highest recrded in mdern times.
13 What des the underlined wrd “carcasses” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Birds alive.B. Ocean fishes.C. Bdies.D. Objects.
14. What is Tye and Renner’s attitude tward the cean ecsystem?
A. Optimistic.B. Cncerned.C. Prejudiced.D. Indifferent.
15. What can we knw frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. Human activities have directly caused glbal warming.
B. The fd web fr seabird ppulatins has imprved a lt.
C. Other species may pse a threat t the survival f seabirds.
D. Peple shuld stress the imprtance f prtecting ther species.
