I want t tell yu abut Yuri. Yuri is a yung brwn bear. He was brn in winter. His mther was hibernating in a den (在窝里冬眠), deep inside the Russian frest. Outside it was cld and everything was cvered by snw. Inside the den with his mther, hwever, Yuri felt safe and warm.
One day, sme hunters (猎人) came. Dgs were sent int the den. Yuri’s mther was wken up. She tried t prtect Yuri, but when she came ut f the den, she was sht by the hunters. Nigeria is a ht and dry cuntry in Africa where electricity is nt available t many hmes. Mst peple grw and sell their wn fruit and vegetables. Keeping them fresh in the ht place is a real challenge. Withut a fridge, mst fresh fd ges bad in a cuple f days. Thrwing away the fd means lsing mney fr pr families. Eating the bad fd causes serius health prblems.
Lcal teacher Mhammed Bah Abba was wrried abut this prblem and decided t slve it. As a by brn int a family f clay pt makers, Mhammed knew that these traditinal clay pts culd keep water even when dry. In the 1990s he used this traditinal knwledge and his understanding f science t invent a cling system (冷却系统). It wrked as a“desert fridge”.
Mhammed’s cling system is made up f tw pts —a small pt inside a larger pt. In the space between the tw clay pts, there is wet sand.
