Scientists with the Brain Gate research center have develped a breakthrugh brain-cmputer interface (BCI). The system aims t restre cmmunicatin fr individuals with speech disabilities caused by cnditins like amytrphic lateral sclersis(ALS). which lead t the gradual lss f mbility and speech. It uses implanted sensrs t interpret brain signals when a user attempts t speak, transfrming them int text that is read alud by a cmputer. The study, published in the New England Jurnal f Medicine n August 14, was led by David Brandman and Sergey Stavisky, faculty members at UC Davis Health.
ALS, als knwn as Lu Gehrig's disease, affects nerve cells cntrlling muscle mvement. BCI technlgy can restre cmmunicatin fr thse affected. In this study, Casey Harrell, a 45-year-ld man with ALS, regained the ability t cmmunicate effectively within minutes f using the system.Harrell described the experience as life-changing, saying, “My past cnditin was s demralizing. Nt being able t cmmunicate seems as if yu were trapped. Smething like this technlgy will help peple get back int life and sciety”
The BrainGate clinical trial, led by Dr. Leigh Hchberg frm Brwn University, has made majr prgress in interpreting brain signals t help peple with paralysis(瘫痪) cmmunicate. In July 2023,the UC Davis team implanted a BCI device int Harrell's brain, fcusing n the left precentral gyrus,a part f the brain that cntrls speech. The system translates brain activity int phnemes (音素)and wrds, enabling real-time cmmunicatin. Harrell's BCI generated speech with a vice similar t his wn, using sftware trained with existing vice samples f his vice befre he develped ALS.This allwed him t cnnect with his lved nes in a deeply persnal way.
Over 32 weeks and 248 hurs f use, the system achieved remarkable results, with 99.6%accuracy fr a 50-wrd vcabulary in 30 minutes f training and 90.2% accuracy fr a 125,000-wrd vcabulary after 1.4 additinal training hurs.
"This is transfrmative technlgy," Brandman said. "It prvides hpe fr peple wh want t speak but can't." Dr. Jhn Ngai, directr f the NIH's BRAIN Initiative, highlighted the milestne as a majr step in restring cmmunicatin fr individuals lcked in by paralysis.

C.It helps peple with ALS mve and speak.
D.It cnnects brains t make cmputers smarter.

    A.Discuraging.
    B.Demanding.
    C.Cmfrting.
    D.Eye-pening.
    10. Why was the speech cmpsed in Harrell's pre-ALS vice?
A.T enable his cmmunicatin in real time.
B.T make his speech emtinally meaningful.
C.T imprve the accuracy f speech translatin.
D.T help interpret his brain signals mre easily.
    11. What is Dr. Jhn Ngai's attitude twards the Brain Gate BCI?

It might surprise yu t learn that dgs are playing an increasingly imprtant rle as cnservatinists. Fr centuries, they have been knwn as man's best friends. Nw, their unique. abilities are being made use f t help prtect sme f the wrld's mst threatened species.
Quick and lyal, dgs pssess many qualities that make them ideal fr fieldwrk, but it's their extrardinary sense f smell that makes them invaluable fr cnservatin wrk. With arund 220millin lfactry receptrs(嗅觉受体) cmpared t just 5 millin in humans, dgs can detect scents (气味) and analyze them with astnishing accuracy, devting 40 times mre f their brain t scent analysis than we d.
Thanks t this incredible ability, sme dgs are nw being trained t save at-risk animals by sniffing (嗅) ut their drppings. At the University f Washingtn's Cnservatin Canines facility,20specially trained dgs have successfully tracked killer whale drppings, which nly flat briefly n the cean's surface. Analyzing these samples enables scientists t mnitr the health f killer whale ppulatins, which are under significant stress frm fd shrtages, pllutin, and bat traffic.
Beynd tracking animal drppings, cnservatin dgs are als trained fr live animal detectin, further shwcasing their abilities. They can lcate rare species in their natural habitats. Additinally, they are nw used t tackle the nn-native species that threaten the survival f the lcal wildlife. Dgs als take n ther imprtant rles. Fr example, at Kenya’ s Mmbasa prt, dgs sniff ut illegal wildlife prducts such as rhin hrns and ivry. Acrss Africa, they wrk n the frntlines against illegal hunting, serving as a pwerful security frce enhancer.
While dgs may nt be the ultimate slutin t every cnservatin challenge, their incmparable abilities make them invaluable cmpanins in the fight t prtect ur planet's bidiversity.

    B.By detecting their drppings.
    C.By mnitring their ppulatins.
    D.By analyzing the cllected samples.
    14. What can we learn frm the example given in paragraph 4?
A.Wildlife prducts are ppular in African cuntries.
B.Nn-native species affect the survival f lcal wildlife.
C.Dgs are used t detect and prevent illegal wildlife trade.
D.Dgs can accurately lcate the natural habitats f rare species.
