My jb is t train rats (老鼠) t detect landmines (地雷) s the explsives can be cleared t save lives. I wrk fr a Belgian nn-gvernmental rganizatin called App that perates frm Mrgr, in my hme cuntry f Tanzania. The rats I train are used in mine-clearing prgrams arund the wrld, including in Angla, Azerbaijan and Cambdia.
I trained Ranen, the rat I’m hlding in this picture. The animals we use are African giant puched rats (Cricetmys gambianus). They are native t sub-Saharan Africa and are the size f a small cat, which makes them easy t handle. They als live lnger than ther rats, which is helpful fr the prgram, because it takes between nine mnths and a year t train ne fully.
My clleagues and I use a methd called Clicker Training: We teach the rats t assciate a click with a fd reward, and then use clicks t prgressively reward behavir. Rats are naturally curius, s they will explre, and their great sense f smell means they can find buried landmines.
T teach the rats what t lk fr, we place small amunts f high explsive in tea-eggs, the small metal cntainers nrmally used t make lse-leaf tea. We reward the rats fr tuching these, and then mve n t reward them nly when they tuch a tea-egg filled with explsives, rather than nes filled with distractins (干扰物), such as hair, flwers r herbs. The rats need t perfrm perfectly at each stage f training befre they prgress In the final stage, we use real deactivated landmines in a training field.
As trainers, we build a cnnectin with the rats we train. Sme are slw learners; thers understand the cncepts very quickly. Mst f the rats make it thrugh, eventually. I wrk with ur resident scientist t cntinually mnitr and adjust ur training prgram, because the rats are s clever that they can utsmart the trainers!

根据第一段“Think back t the last time when yu wrte dwn a quick nte r made a grcery list. Chances are that it wasn’t with pen and paper. Over the past decade, keybards and screens have quietly replaced handwriting in ur daily rutines, frm classrms t ffice meetings. Sme schls arund the wrld have even stpped teaching handwriting altgether. (回想一下你最近一次快速写下便条或列购物清单的情景。很有可能不是用纸和笔。在过去的十年里,从教室到办公室会议,键盘和屏幕已经悄悄地取代了我们日常生活中的手写。世界各地的一些学校甚至完全停止了手写教学)”可知,本段主要描述手写在日常生活中已经不那么常见的现象。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Adults als benefit frm the labr-intensive nature f handwriting. A study invlving 42 adults learning Arabic fund that participants wh learned letters by writing them dwn by hand were quicker t recgnize them, had an easier time naming them, and were better at sunding the newly learned letters ut cmpared with peple wh were asked t learn the new characters by typing r by just lking at them. (成年人也从手写的劳动密集性中受益。一项涉及42名学习阿拉伯语的成年人的研究发现,与那些通过打字或看字母来学习新字母的人相比,那些通过手写来学习字母的人能更快地认出这些字母,更容易说出它们的名字,而且在发音方面也更好)”可推知,作者通过展示一项研究的结果来证明手写对成年人有益。故选C项。

Trees are having truble in absrbing heat-trapping carbn dixide (CO2) in warmer climates, meaning that they may n lnger serve as a slutin t reducing humans’ carbn ftprint as the planet cntinues t warm, accrding t a new study led by Penn State researchers.
“We have fund that trees in warmer climates are essentially cughing instead f breathing,” said Max Llyd, assistant research prfessr at Penn State. “They are sending CO2 right back int the atmsphere far mre than in cler cnditins.”
Thrugh the prcess f phtsynthesis, trees absrb CO2 frm the atmsphere t prduce new grwth. Yet, under stressful cnditins, trees release CO2 back int the atmsphere, a prcess called phtrespiratin. With an analysis f glbal data f tree tissue, the research team demnstrated that the rate f phtrespiratin is up t tw times higher in warmer climates. They fund this respnse in subtrpical (亚热带的) climates can be strnger as temperatures rise further.
The results cmplicate a widespread belief that trees can draw dwn r use carbn frm the atmsphere at a cnstant rate, prviding new insight int hw trees culd adapt t climate change. Imprtantly, the researchers nted that as the climate warms, their findings demnstrate that trees culd be less able t draw CO2 ut f the atmsphere and take in the carbn t help the planet cl dwn.
Plants currently absrb an estimated 25% f the CO2 prduced by human activities each year, accrding t the U.S. Department f Energy, but this percentage is likely t decrease in the future as the climate warms. Llyd explained.
The team nw wrk t unearth phtrespiratin rates in the ancient past, up t tens f millins f years ag, by studying fssilized (变成化石的) wd. Llyd said the methd culd ffer researchers a tl fr predicting bw well trees might “breathe” in the future s that we culd prperly respnd accrdingly.
32. What d the underlined wrds “this respnse” in paragraph 3 refer t?
A. Trapping mre heat in the daytime.
B. Grwing under stressful cnditins.
C. Remving CO2 prduced by humans.
D. Releasing CO2 back int the atmsphere.
33. Which cmmn belief is challenged by the new study?
A. Trees cnstantly help t reduce CO2.B. The planet is becming warmer.
C. Human activities can prduce CO2.D. CO2 can trap heat in the atmsphere.
34. Why d the team study fssilized wd?
A. T prepare fr the future.B. T restre ancient trees.
C. T reflect n the present.D. T stp trees frm dying.
35. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Trees cntinue t absrb heat-trapping CO2.
B. Reducing humans’ carbn ftprint is challenging.
C. Climate change makes trees less able t absrb CO2.
D. Hw plants adapt t warmer climates remains unknwn.

D“Releasing CO2 back int the atmsphere.(将二氧化碳释放回大气中)”相符。

通读全文,尤其是由第一段“Trees are having truble in absrbing heat-trapping carbn dixide (CO2) in warmer climates, meaning that they may n lnger serve as a slutin t reducing humans’ carbn ftprint as the planet cntinues t warm, accrding t a new study led by Penn State researchers. (一项由宾夕法尼亚州立大学研究人员领导的新研究表明,在气候变暖的情况下,树木在吸收导致温室效应的二氧化碳(CO2)方面遇到了困难,这意味着随着地球持续变暖,树木可能不再成为减少人类碳足迹的解决方案。)”可知,文章主要讲述了气候变化使树木吸收二氧化碳的能力减弱。故选C。
