As a child, Mate DeLa Rcha dreamed f wrking as a garbage man. In his hme city, trash piles were everywhere. The lcal sanitatin wrker was the nly persn cleaning up the pllutin.
DeLa Rcha’s family later mved t the United States. Nw as a high schl senir, he has fund a unique way t tackle pllutin: Alng with tw friends, he raised $11,000 t plug an abandned il well in Ohi that was leaking gas clse t a barn n a hrse farm.
As many as 3.9 millin abandned and aging il and gas wells are spread acrss the U.S., accrding t the Envirnmental Prtectin Agency (EPA), and at least 126,000 f these wells are “rphans”. This means there is n wner r cmpany t be held respnsible fr them.
The EPA estimates that abandned wells cllectively released 303,000 tnnes f methane in 2022. That’s rughly equivalent t the annual carbn dixide emissins f 23 gas-burning pwer plants.
After cmpleting his AP Envirnmental Science class, DeLa Rcha realized the issue f abandned wells was
smething fr which individuals culd ptentially make a difference. He then invited tw classmates, Sebastian Ng and Lila Gisndi, t jin him.
“When Mate apprached me abut this, I lked int these methane wells and what we culd d abut them,” Ng said. “It kind f flipped a switch.” Previusly, he had felt helpless abut climate change but wuld simply jke abut the wrld ending.
Fr Gisndi, talking with her friends abut these methane-emitting wells brught climate change frm the back f her mind t the frefrnt. “It was smething that I felt I culd actually help with,” she said.
After mre research, the tri cnnected with The Well Dne Fundatin (WDF), a nnprfit rganizatin specializing in plugging rphaned wells. The rganizatin was funded by Curtis Shuck, a veteran f the il and gas industry. Since 2019, his rganizatin has surveyed mre than 1, 700 abandned wells natinwide and plugged 44 f what they identified as the mst prblematic nes.
On May 23, cntractrs pured the cement t plug the rphaned well in Ohi. With the initial success, DeLa Rcha, Ng and Gisndi are nw mre cnfident abut the future f their cause.
    4. What inspired DeLa Rcha’s interest in envirnmental issues initially?
    A. The Well Dne Fundatin’s wrk.B. His AP Envirnmental Science class.
    C. The pllutin and lack f help t address in hmetwn.D. His family’s mve t America.
    5. Plugging abandned il wells can help t fight climate change because it ____________.
    A. stps methane frm leaking int the atmsphere
    B. prevents pllutin f nearby farms
    C. helps reduce carbn dixide emissins
    D. encurages il cmpanies t manage their wells respnsibly
    6. Del. a Rcha’s prpsal made his friends feel ____________.
    A. disappinted with envirnmental rganizatins
    B. uncertain abut their ability t make a difference
    C. mtivated t cntinue their envirnmental studies
    D. cnfident abut their persnal impact n climate change

Scientists have slved a puzzle abut mdern humans, after research shwed that a famus skull f a human ancestr fund in Suth Africa is a millin years lder than experts thught. This discvery has changed what we knw f human histry.
The skull, which scientists have named “Mrs Ples”, is frm an ape-like human relative frm a species called Australpithecus africanus (南方古猿). It was fund near Jhannesburg in 1947 and, based n evidence frm its surrundings, was thught t be between 2. 1 and 2. 6 millin years ld. This puzzled scientists, because althugh Mrs Ples lks like a pssible early ancestr f early humans, the first true humans had already evlved by the time she apparently lived. Fr this reasn, scientists had decided that Australpithecus afarensis, a similar species frm East Africa that lived abut 3.5 millin years ag, was ur mst likely ancestr instead.
T get a mre accurate age fr Mrs Ples, a team led by Prfessr Darryl Granger f Purdue University in Indiana, US, used a new methd t date the sandy rcks where the skull lay. They measured the amunt f certain chemicals in rcks, which frm at a steady rate when they are expsed t csmic rays (宇宙射线) n Earth’s surface. Once rcks are buried, these chemicals stp frming and slwly disappear;the surviving amunt reveals hw much time has passed since the rck (r bnes) were n the surface.
The new study shws that Mrs Ples and ther australpithecine bnes nearby are between 3.4 and 3.7 millin years ld. This means they lived at the same time as their East African relatives, s that either grup culd have given rise t mdern humans. Hwever, team member Dr Laurent Bruxelles pinted ut that ver millins f years, at nly 2,500 miles away, these grups had plenty f time t travel and t breed with each ther. In ther wrds, the grups culd quite easily have met, had children tgether and bth been part f the histry f mdern humans.
    8. What can we learn abut Mrs Ples frm the first tw paragraphs?
    A. It is a skull fund in East Africa.
    B. It is the mst pssible ancestr f humans.
    C. It is a millin years lder than scientists expected.
    D. It is prved t live between 2.1 and 2.6 millin years ag.
    9. Hw did scientists get the accurate age f “Mrs Ples”?
    A. By studying the effect f csmic rays.
    B. By calculating the frming rate f chemicals.
    C. By lcating the sandy rcks where the skull lay.
    D. By measuring the surviving amunt f chemicals.
    10. What can we infer frm the new study?
    A. Mdern humans came int being in East Africa.
    B. Mrs Ples travelled and had children with East African relatives.
    C. The histry f mdern humans might begin 3.5 millin years ag.
    D. Ape-like species frm Africa culd have interacted with each ther.
    11. Which f the fllwing can be the best title f the passage?
    A. Histrical Puzzle UnslvedB. Ancestr Mystery Slved
    C. Mrs Ples: The Earliest Human BeingD. Mrs Ples: A Famus Skull
    D
In an empty parking lt, a car “thinks” it is n a real rad. Researchers at the Ohi State University have develped new sftware t aid in the develpment, evaluatin and demnstratin f safer driverless vehicles. Called the Vehicle-in-Virtual-Envirnment (VVE) methd, it allws the testing f driverless cars in a perfectly safe envirnment, said Bilin Aksun-Guvene, c-authr f the study and a prfessr f Ohi State.
Althugh autnmus driving technlgies have becme a much mre cmmn sight n the rad in the last few years, due t the increasing number f accidents these systems have caused. the way these technlgies are tested deserves clser bservatin.
Current appraches fr demnstrating autnmus vehicle functins invlve testing sftware and technlgy first in simulatins (模拟) and then n public rads. Yet this methd essentially turns ther rad users int invluntary participants in these driving experiments. Such risks can make the entire develpment prcess cstly, inefficient, and ptentially unsafe fr bth drivers and pedestrians (行人) alike.
T vercme the limitatins f these faulty assessments, researchers in this study equipped a real vehicle with simulated data t cnnect its cntrls t a highly realistic 3D envirnment. much like giving the machine a VR headset r virtual reality glasses. After feeding the data t the driving system’s cmputers and syncing (同步) the car’s real mtins with the simulatins’, researchers were able t shw that it behaves as if the virtual envirnment were its true surrundings in real time.
But what makes their sftware especially pwerful, said Aksun-Guvenc, is the strength f hw flexible their virtual envirnment can be. “When actual senses are replaced by virtual senses, the mdel can be easily changed t fit any kind f scenari,” said Guvenc.
“We culd see this technlgy becming an imprtant prduct in the industry in the next 5 r 10 years. That’s
why we’re fcusing n building mre applicatins fr it.” Guvene added.
    12. What can we say abut autnmus driving?
    A. It is free f dangers.B. It definitely has a lng way t g.
    C. Its safety testing matters.D. Its technlgy is mature.
    13. What are the features f VVE methd?
    A. Safe and real.B. Easy and cheap.
    C. Cstly and inefficient.D. Tugh and cmplicated.
    14. What des the underlined wrd “scenari” in Paragraph 5 mean?
    A. Strategy.B. Experiment.C. Revisin.D. Situatin.
    15. What is the best title fr the text?
    A. Overcming the Limitatins f Autnmus Driving
    B. Testing Real Driverless Cars in a Virtual Envirnment
    C. Making Autnmus Driving Mre Cmmn n the Rad
    D. Fcusing n Building Mre Applicatins fr Driverless Cars

    Embrace English, Shw Ourselves
Last week witnessed huge success f ur schl's English Week themed “Embrace English, Shw Ourselves”.
Amng the many events, the ne that has left a lasting impressin n me is the “English Drama Night”. Students frm different classes gruped tgether t perfrm English plays, ranging frm classic Shakespearean tragedies t cntemprary pieces. I was nt nly impressed by my fellw students’ excellent cmmand f the English language, but als deeply mved by their vivid prtrayal f the characters.
The week serves as a reminder that learning English is nt just abut mastering grammar and vcabulary. It is als abut self-expressin. Nw, I'm mre mtivated than ever t cntinue imprving my English t bring ut the best in myself.

Suddenly, it dawned n me that I culd draw Anita in actin. Quickly turning t a blank page, I bradly utlined the shape f my cusin buncing the sccer ball. My spirits rse with each new line I drew. It was true that I didn’t enjy playing sprts, but I was really enjying the challenge f trying t sketch my cusin in actin! Althugh it was my first attempt at smething like this, I was pleased with the way I’d captured the energy f Anita’s mvements. As I was examining my drawing, I didn’t ntice the sccer ball was n lnger buncing. I glanced up t see Anita curiusly eyeing my drawing. Nervusly, I handed the sketchbk t her.
Anita studied the drawing carefully. I resisted the urge t grab the sketchbk and hide. She must think it was ttally weird. Hwever, Anita said it was awesme and asked if she culd have it. Befre I culd respnd, she had already ripped the drawing ut f the sketchbk. Then Anita rummaged thrugh a drawer fr a tape, saying that she wasn’t really int art, but thught the drawing shuld definitely be n display in “ur rm”. After taping the drawing ver ne f her psters, Anita said a few changes needed t be made arund the rm if I was mving in. With a brad smile, I picked up Anita’s sccer ball and tssed it tward my new rmmate. “Think fast! ”
