The pair tk Meme in and raised the animal themselves fr seven mnths befre releasing her back ut int the wild. Neither f them had ever raised a blesbk befre. S it required a huge amunt f patience and cmpassin t keep her fit and healthy but it deserved the effrt. Meme wuld fllw Vera wherever she went and smetimes the cuple wuld have a blesbk, a dg and a cat all walking tgether. In the right areas, the blesbk is a really cmmn antelpe t see and is therefre ften verlked and under-appreciated. It was a privilege t be let int the blesbk’s secret wrld and they learned mre abut the blesbk than they thught was ever pssible.
After releasing Meme back ut int the wild, the cuple were cnvinced they wuld never see her again, until several mnths later when they were driving arund a reserve and happened t cme acrss a herd f blesbks.
Vera called ut Meme’s name in the hpe f finding Meme. Blesbks all lk very similar t ne anther, which makes it very difficult t distinguish individuals. Insurance cmpanies are starting t use smart bx technlgy, s gd drivers can benefit frm cheap insurance rates.
The smartbx, similar t a black bx fr airplanes, recrds details abut hw yur car is driven, which can result in cheap car insurance fr respnsible drivers. The device is cnnected t the electrnics in yur car and cllects a wide criterin f infrmatin such as time, speed, braking, crnering, acceleratin and lcatin. It’s like having an insurance agent sitting beside yu while driving.
The smartbx data is wireless transferred in real time t the insurance cmpany and prvides a prfile f when, where and hw yu drive. This prfile is then used t cmpare insurance rates and t reward lw-risk driving behavir with cheap insurance rates.
Drivers are high-risk when they drive irrespnsibly such as speeding, frequent lane changing, driving in high-risk lcatins r at high-risk times such as in heavy traffic r late at night.
These new electrnic inventins are intended t replace the standard practice f categrizing drivers int grup behavir t determine insurance cverage and premium(保费)payments. Fr example, yung drivers are mre likely t drive fast, drive at night and use a cell phne while driving. Statistically, yung drivers are mre likely t cause an accident, s insurance cmpanies charge them higher rates t cver the csts f accident claims. S even if yu're a yung, respnsible driver, yu will pay high insurance rates because f grup behavir.
This technlgy allws yu t prvide prf that yur driving behavir desn’t fit the pattern f yur demgraphic (统计) grup.
All the infrmatin cllected abut yur driving can be viewed nline — including what yu're ding well and what culd be imprved. Yur insurance premium is then calculated accrding t yur driving prfile.
What will a gd driver benefit frm the smart bx?
A. Fewer traffic accidents. B. Better traffic rder.
C. Lwer insurance payment. D. Less petrl used in driving.
29. Hw des the insurance cmpany mnitr the driving?
A. By checking the device in the car. B. By sitting beside the driver.
C. By watching the traffic n the rads. D. By cllecting the driving data nline.
30. What will the use f smartbxes bring abut?
A. Better service fr cars. B. Lwer prices f petrl.
C. Mre cnvenient transprt. D. Mre reasnable insurance charge.
31. What can we infer abut the smart bx frm the text?
A. It requires better driving habits. B. It saves the drivers a lt f time.
C. It helps the drivers use less energy. D. It takes the place f the traffic plice.
D
The rapid pace f glbal warming and its effects n habitats raise the questin f whether species are able t keep up s that they remain in suitable living cnditins. Sme animals can mve fast t adjust t a quickly changing climate. Plants, being less mbile, rely n means such as seed dispersal (传播) by animals, wind r water t mve t new areas, but this redistributin typically ccurs within ne kilmeter f the riginal plant. Writing in Nature, Juan P. Gnzález-Var sheds light n the ptential capacity f migratry birds t aid seed dispersal.
Gnzález-Var and clleagues reprt hw plants might be able t keep pace with rapid climate change thrugh the help f migrating birds. They analyzed an impressive data set f 949 different seed-dispersal interactins between bird and plant cmmunities, tgether with data n entire fruiting times and migratry patterns f birds acrss Eurpe.
Perhaps the mst striking feature f these inferred seed mvements is the bservatin that 35 percent f plant species acrss Eurpean cmmunities, which are clsely related n the phylgenetic tree (进化树谱), might benefit frm lng-distance dispersal by the nrthward jurney f migratry birds. This particular grup f plants tends t fruit ver a lng perid f time, r has fruits that persist ver the winter. This means that the ability f plants t keep up with climate change culd be shaped by their evlutinary histry – implying that future plant cmmunities in the Nrthern Hemisphere will prbably cme frm plant species that are phylgenetically clsely related and that have migrated frm the suth.
This study prvides a great example f hw migratry birds might assist plant redistributin t new lcatins that wuld nrmally be difficult fr them t reach n their wn, and which might ffer a suitable climate.
32. What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
A. Plants can better adapt t glbal warming than animals.
B. Quickly changing climate desn’t have great effects n animals.
C. Sme animals and plants mve t cntinue their species ’ survival.
D. Wind and water cntribute t plants ’ lng-distance redistributin.
33. Hw did Gnzález-Var and his clleagues carry ut the research?
A. By studying related data. B. By ding cmprehensive surveys.
C. By interviewing plant experts. D. By cnducting field research .
34. What can we infer frm the third paragraph?
A. The majrity f plant species benefit a lt frm lng-distance dispersal.
B. Plants with lnger fruiting times adapt better when they are transprted farther.
C. Plants have a better chance f survival if their seeds are dispersed acrss Eurpe.
D. Plant cmmunities in different hemispheres will be phylgenetically less related.
35. What culd be the best title fr the text?
A. Ways t Redistribute Plants t New Climates
B. Impacts f Climate Change n Migratry Birds
C. Migratry Birds Aid the Redistributin f Plants
D. Plants Struggle t Keep Pace with Climate Change
