It’s really nt ging t be easy fr humans t set up a habitat n the Mn, but a new discvery culd alleviate sme prblems. An analysis f satellite data that was cllected in 2010 suggests a gaping hle in the lunar crust (地壳) culd lead t a netwrk f caves which future Lunar explrers might use fr shelter.

Lava tubes (熔岩管) are created when lava slidifies at the surface while cntinuing t flw underneath. Eventually, the undergrund current f lava drains away, leaving an empty hle under a nw-slid vlcanic rck layer — a natural cave. They can happen anywhere there has been vlcanic activity and they’ve been sptted n Mars. S whle netwrks are thught t exist n the Mn.
These lunar lava tubes are f keen interest t scientists designing lunar explratin missins, since they wuld prvide a human Mn base prtectin frm the severe surface envirnment. But psitively identifying a cave system just frm hles in the lunar surface has been a bit f a challenge.
The next step was t mdel the shape f the tunnel beneath the skylight. The best explanatin fr the structure, the researchers fund, was a lava tube extending frm the skylight, int the interir f the Mn.
Having fund ne lava tube n the Mn means that there are likely t be mre up there that are waiting t be discvered. And identifying where they are culd help narrw dwn the best sites fr a lng-term lunar base.
