We’re all renters. Renters cme and g and tend nt t see the buildings they live in as their hme. But it can be dne. We started with a mnthly tw-hur scial in the building lbby (前厅) n the secnd Fridays f each mnth. Sme peple came, between 15-30 each time. The events lasted tw hurs, but there wasn’t much t d besides talking, eating snacks and drinking juice. The scials were nice, but mst residents gave them a miss.
Then ne day I was n the nearby campus f San Francisc State University. A yung man frm a scial club fr students had a big sign abut “Building Cmmunity”. I asked him, “Hw d yu d that?” He said they tried t get peple t share smething abut themselves with at least ne ther persn. That made a lt f sense t me.
I bught a large wrld map. At the scial, I taped it n the lbby walls with signs that said “Where We’re Frm. Put a green sticker where yu were brn and yellw stickers where yur grandparents were brn.” Peple put up their stickers and lked where ther peple came frm. We left the map up vernight, and the next day, Saturday, mre peple played. I planned t leave the map and stickers up fr a mnth r mre. There’s s much carbn dixide (CO2) in the air that just planting trees and prtecting frests wn’t slve the prblem. When plants and trees die, the carbn they’ve stred gets released again. Mrever, the CO2 in the atmsphere is much mre dilute than in, fr example, waste gas frm a pwer statin r a steel plant. Capturing CO2 frm the air is the mst expensive applicatin f carbn capture.
Direct Air Capture (DAC) is ne type f technlgical carbn remval, which btains CO2 directly frm the atmsphere at any lcatin, unlike carbn capture which is generally carried ut at the pint f emissins. The CO2 can be permanently stred in deep gelgical frmatins r used fr a variety f applicatins.
Graphyte is a US cmpany wrking n DAC.The cmpany claims its carbn capture methd is cheap, mainly because it lets plants d the wrk. The cmpany cllects unwanted wd prducts frm farmers and furniture cmpanies. It dries this “bimass” cmpletely s that it can’t break dwn. Graphyte then smashes (打碎) the dried plants int small bricks which it seals in a special wrapper and buries deep undergrund.
Graphyte says its prcess desn’t use much energy and can wrk anywhere. The plant and tree material the prcess uses wuld release carbn if it wasn’t treated. And the cst is less than$ 100 t capture a tn f CO2. The cmpany is building a factry, but it’s nt running yet.
Nt everyne is excited abut this carbn remval. Sme peple wrry that it will take t lng fr DAC technlgy t becme pwerful enugh t make a difference. Others wrry that fcusing n remving carbn culd take attentin away frm mre imprtant climate actins, like switching frm fssil fuels t renewable energy. But experts say the decisin isn’t t d ne r the ther. The wrld needs t end fssil fuel use and pull carbn ut f the air.
28.What des the authr intend t tell us in the first paragraph?
A.Trees can purify the air in the sky.B.Plants release mre carbn dixide.
C.Remving carbn frm air is challenging.D.CO2 emissin reductin is urgently needed.
29.What des the underlined wrd “dilute” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Beneficial. B.Thin.C.Harmful. D.Cncentrated.
30.What can we knw abut Graphyte’s DAC prject?
A.Its cst is relatively lw.B.It is in gd peratin nw.
C.Its wrking cnditin is demanding.D.It turns carbn int building materials.
31.What is the experts’ pinin abut DAC technlgy?
A.It will make a difference sn.
B.It can replace renewable energy in time.
C.It will result in mre envirnmental cncerns.
D.It can wrk tgether with ther climate measures.

Each f us individually is the accumulated (积累) prduct f thusands f generatins that have cme befre us in an unbrken line. Our culture and technlgy tday are als the result f thusands f years f accumulated and remixed cultural knwledge. Cumulative culture allwed humans t adapt t a diversity f envirnments and challenges. But, it is unclear when cumulative culture first develped during ancient human evlutin.
“Our earliest ancestrs have been successful at adapting t eclgical cnditins that require different kinds f prblems t be slved,” said Perreault, an assciate prfessr with the Schl f Human Evlutin and Scial Change. “Cumulative culture is key because it allws human ppulatins t build n and recmbine the slutins f prir generatins and t develp new cmplex slutins t prblems very quickly.”
As a baseline fr the cmplexity f stne tl technlgies achievable withut cumulative culture, Perreault analyzed technlgies used by chimpanzees (黑猩猩). He then analyzed changes in the cmplexity f stne tl-making techniques acrss the past 3.3 millin years f the archaelgical recrd t explre the rigin f cumulative culture. He brke dwn the cmplexity f the stne tl technlgies by the number f steps that each tl-making sequence (序列) invlved.
The results suggested that frm arund 3.3 t 1.8 millin years ag, stne tl-making sequences remained within the range f the baselines. Frm arund 1.8 millin t 600,000 years ag, making sequences began t slightly tp the cmplexity baseline. But, after arund 600,000 years ag, the cmplexity f making sequences rapidly increased. “By 600,000 years ag r s, ancient human ppulatins started relying n unusually cmplex technlgies, and we nly see rapid increases in cmplexity after that time as well,” said Perreault.
Tl-assisted fd-hunting may have been the mtive fr the earliest beginning f the evlutin f cumulative culture. Early ancient humans, 3.4 t 2 millin years ag, likely relied n strategies that require tls—like accessing meat and rgans—leading t changes in brain size, lifetime and bilgy that set the stage fr cumulative culture.
32.What des cumulative culture refer t accrding t the text?
A.Emphasizing individual develpment.
B.Paying attentin t refrming scial structure.
C.Adapting t a changing living cnditin step by step.
D.Building up technlgical imprvements ver generatins.
33.What’s Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A.Hw Perreault cnducted the research.B.Hw imprtant stne tl technlgies were.
C.What the baseline f cumulative culture was.D.Why Perreault chse chimpanzees fr the study.
34.What happened by 600,000 years ag?
A.Tl-making sequences remained unchanged.
B.The ppulatin f the earth increased sharply.
C.The ancestrs began t make stne tls.
D.The technlgy reached a turning pint.
35.Why are strategies that require tls mentined in the last paragraph?
A.T shw the result f human brains’ changes.
B.T illustrate the mtive f cumulative culture.
C.T indicate the significance f cmmn culture.
D.T stress the eating habits f human ancestrs.
