Like almst every set f new parents, Bryan and Elizabeth Shaw started snapping pictures f their sn, Nah, practically frm the mment he was brn. When he was abut three mnths ld, Elizabeth nticed smething dd.

Scientists tested the effects f new PVC pellets (聚氯乙烯颗粒) n the develpment f seven species, nning all majr grups f marine animals. They fund expsure t high cncentratins f PVC pellets prevented healthy develpment in all seven species.
The study, by an internatinal team led by the Stazine Zlgica Antn Dhrn di Napli (SZN) and the University f Exeter, highlights the “ptentially catastrphic effects” f rising levels f plastic in the cean.
“When expsed t high levels f new PVC pellets, the species we examined went wrng in different ways,” said the first authr Dr. Jimenez-Guri. “Sme failed t make a shell; sme failed t frm prper bilateral (两侧的) features; sme just stpped develping after a few runds f cell divisin. They all failed t make a viable embry (胚胎).”
The study als examined the bad effects f plastic samples recvered frm beaches. While the effects were nt as widespread as thse f new PVC pellets, high cncentratins were fund t affect the develpment f mllusks (软体动物), including sea urchins, sea stars and sea squirts.
Casts and rivers are knwn ht spts fr plastic pllutin. As the species in the study all live in castal areas, severe pllutin culd have a majr impact.
“If yu have extreme pllutin at a time when these species are reprducing, then yu dn’t have the next generatin f thse species,” said Dr. Jimenez-Guri.
Explaining hw plastics cause develpmental abnrmalities, Dr. Jimenez-Guri said plastics cntain a cmplex variety f ptentially harmful cmpnents including zinc, which are slwly released nce plastic is in the water.
She added, “If we reach these extreme levels f plastic pllutin at ur casts, which happens in islated cases but is thankfully uncmmn at present, many species may becme unable t reprduce, with massive impacts n marine life, the wider envirnment and peple. We need urgent actin t reduce the amunt f plastic entering the cean.”
