Prfessr Brwne was a well-regarded schlar f Canadian cnstitutinal histry. But he liked discussing grammar and language even mre than the natin’s past. He referred t Henry Fwler’s A Dictinary f Mdern English Usage ften as the final authrity n all written English. He returned ur assignments full f red markings. Every grammar failure was crrected, many sentences were imprved and ur thinking was challenged.
A few weeks int the term, I wrked harder n every assignment. As stressed as I was abut the wrk the curse required, I came t lk frward t the class. I was awestruck that anyne culd be s passinate abut language and wrds.
When I received my grade at the end f the curse, I was excited t receive my first A. I had measured up t Prfessr Brwne’s expectatins. Students f Hagerstwn Jr-Sr High Schl walk dwn grassy land t reach their newest classrm: a fenced-in field f cattle. Starting in the next academic year, the cattle, which arrived last mnth and have names like Grund Rund and Hney Bear, will be fed by students taking an agricultural science class. Then, when the animals are fat enugh, they will be fed back t their caretakers — as beef in their lunch.
Hagerstwn, ppulatin 1,769, is like many rural cmmunities facing the cst f ppulatin decline and cncerns that lcal agricultural ties are disappearing. Farming jbs are disappearing. Residents mve away every year and few return.
Schls in Hagerstwn have lst enugh students since 2020 t cause a significant drp in per-pupil funding frm the state. Schl fficials say the Hagerstwn cattle prgram is expected t save at least $2,000 in annual cafeteria csts and expand career training. “We’ll have mre meat than we’ll be able t cnsume,” said Mark Childs, the principal(校长)at the schl, which will sell its extra beef.
Accrding t a United States Department f Agriculture reprt released this mnth, the number f farmers declined by nearly 20 percent frm 2017 t 2022. The ttal number f farms als fell as large fd prducers expanded and land prices rse.
Hagerstwn has perhaps as gd a chance as any place t buck the brader trend. Dairy(乳品的)farmers have arrived frm Pennsylvania in recent years, with mre n the way. Teachers at the schl tend crps and livestck(家畜)n the side fr extra incme. Sme students speak with pride abut the lcal sil-judging team, which last year fell just shy f qualifying fr natinals.
But even supprters admit the plan culd backfire. What if the cws get lse r die? What if the price f beef drps? What if pupils grw attached t their assignment and cannt stmach the sight f Hney Bear between tw hamburger buns(圆面包)? Mr. Williamsn, wh wrks.400 acres(英亩)f crps at hme when he is nt teaching, said n lessn plan abut farming wuld be cmplete withut a little risk.
    28. What is a prblem facing Hagerstwn?

    C. Peple leaving the twn.
    D. Students drpping ut f schl.

    B. As a slutin t its budget prblems.
    C. T answer students’ requests fr hands-n learning.
    D. T prepare students fr the natinal sil judging cntest.

What’s the difference between Mzart and Pavartti? Well, ne was a child genius and cmpser wh systematically learned the rules f music at an early age — the ther, a singer expert at mimicry (模仿).
Singers have a talent fr freign languages, mst ntably when it cmes t prnunciatin and accent because, they mimic what they hear. It’s smething that Pavartti, wh culdn’t read sheet music, did with his peratic singing. “Singers are the best with the accent,” says Susanne Reiterer, a neurlinguistics(神经语言学)researcher at the University f Vienna in Austria. “A freign accent is a piece f cake fr them.”

Fr multilingual musicians, language helps them see the wrld as they tur, prduce new wrk, and meet ther sngbirds. It seems that in a wrld full f rule-fllwers, it pays t be a Pavartti.
    32. What was Pavartti gd at?
    A. Cmpsing music. B. Reading sheet music.
    C. Picking up new prnunciatins. D. Cnducting peras and cncerts.
    33. What des Reiterer say abut language ability in paragraph3?
    A. It is half bilgically determined.
    B. It relies n cntinuus practice.
    C. It determines ne’s singing ability.
    D. It cntributes t sund discriminatin.
    34. What thery des Reiterer’s 2015 study cnfirm?
    A. Sme peple are brn t be musicians.
    B. Multilinguists are able t play instruments well.
    C. Singers are better language learners than instrumentalists.
    D. Nn-musicians can learn music faster after vcal mtr training.
    35. What might Emmet cntinue ding?
    A. Turing the wrld. B. Learning frm Pavartti.
    C. Befriending ther musicians. D. Imprving his freign tngues.

T demnstrate, Mr Smith drew a grup f small, quick prtraits. He began each ne with a circle, sme straight lines, and a triangle(三角形 )t determine where the eyes, nse, and muth shuld g. Alia watched in amazement as varius faces emerged frm the simple shapes. She had never thught abut it befre, but there was a hidden rder t the human face, a structure that culd be created with lines and angles. Each line required fcus and precisin, just like a scientific experiment.
After the demnstratin, Mr Smith passed a pencil t Alia, inviting her t put int practice what he had just explained. “Everyne can d it,” he encuraged the girl. “I am lking frward t yur wrk.” Mr Smith turned away t give ther students instructins.
