How can a creature so tiny cause such remarkable pain? Justin Schmidt wondered too, and spent his life trying to find out. Therefore, he was called “The King of Sting”. To further human knowledge, Schmidt put his bare arms into beehives and dug up bullet ants in Brazil. Over 35 years,150 different species of insects stung him. If the insects would not give him stings, he placed them on his arm and encouraged them, in the name of science. Then, he took out his notebook and wrote it up. Most famously, in 1983, he created the Schmidt Index, ranking the stings of 78 insects from one to four according to their pain. The honey bee was his anchoring value (锚定值), since most people knew what a bee sting felt like, and was rated a two. His list was a tool to explore why causing pain was more necessary for some insects than others. Solitary (独居的) insects, he found, tended to have a much milder sting than those organized into complex groups. From this, he believed that stings allowed insects to get more food, hence build social structures, hence need to defend the nest, and the whole group. Most stings were highly effective. Predators (捕食者) thousands of times larger remembered stings well, and kept their distance. Only bears and a few other species thought the pain worth the reward. Schmidt had never forgotten his first encounter with a bee, which stung him on the neck when he was five and running wild in the woods of Appalachian Pennsylvania. That did not put him off, though. Insects enchanted him. He fell in a river once, wet and dirty, trying to catch a butterfly. As a teenager, he had his own beehives. In his early 20s, he was on the road in a car filled with tools to dig up and study harvester ants in Georgia whose stings were curiously lasting. That curiosity shaped his life.24. How did Justin Schmidt do his research on the stings of insects?A. By raising insects in the lab. B. By getting stings willingly.C. By collecting species of insects. D. By observing insects in their habitats.25. Which of the following is one of Justin Schmidt’s findings?A. Solitary insects bear no threat.B. Bees sting the most among insects.C. There are four kinds of insect stings.D. Social insects usually have more painful stings.26 What does “enchanted” underlined in the last paragraph probably mean?A. Changed. B. Attracted. C. Astonished. D. Attacked.27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. Schmidt’s natural talent for insectology.B. Schmidt’s career as an insect researcher.C. Schmidt’s early experiences with stings.D. Schmidt’s lifelong passion with insects.CMany of us wonder what lies in outer space. When we look up at the night sky, we see stars, the shinning of a moving satellite and occasionally a distant planet. But one thing we don’t see is the millions of pieces of junk filling up space. It’s this debris (残骸) that’s causing problems for the existing technology that’s up there and which we rely on. The amount of space junk is increasing. Over the last few decades, satellites and rockets have been launched into space, littering the universe as they go. It’s estimated there are now millions of pieces of metal and other materials in orbit — everything from old rocket to accidentally dropped astronaut tools, and even bits of paint. The fear is that if we don’t start taking this litter out of the sky soon, it will become a significant threat to active satellites. Nobu Okada, Chief Executive of Astroscale — a company working on ways to clean up space junk — says hitting “even a small piece of paint… has enough power to blow up other satellites.”Several ideas are being looked at to collect the debris floating around in space. In2018, the Remove Debris spacecraft carried out various experiments, including testing a net that could follow a satellite and firing a harpoon (叉) at a target in orbit to try to catch it. This year the UK Space Agency is helping to fund new approaches to tracking satellites and debris in space. Jacob Geer from UKSA told the BBC: “Space surveillance (监控) and tracking is one of the key things we can do to keep safe those satellites we rely on now, and to make sure certain orbits don’t become inaccessible for future generations because there’s too much debris in them.”It’s clear that a solution is needed so a deep clean can take place. But looking to the future, like any litter problem, we need to look at ways of creating less — and that shouldn’t be the stuff of science fiction.28. What does the first paragraph say about space junk?A. It is something dangerous. B. Its influence has been undervalued.C. It was left by astronauts on purpose. D. Its amount is becoming small recently.29. Why did Nobu Okada mention a small piece of paint?A. To stress the significance of active satellites.B. To introduce the plan of cleaning the debris.C. To explain the difficulty in cleaning space junk.D. To describe the damage space junk could bring.30. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 4?A. The effort to remove space junk. B. The approach of space surveillance.C. The importance of sending up satellites. D. The experiment of tracking spacecraft.31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?A. Space junk: satellites threatB. Scientists’ exploration of outer spaceC. Space surveillance: a way to keep space cleanD. New proof of space junk’s harm to the universeDWith the world’s forests under threat, reforestation is essential in the fight against climate change and to protect biodiversity, but planting young trees by hand can be labor-intensive. So drones (无人机) have begun to be used to drop seeds onto land deforested by wildfires. A company called Mast Reforestation has applied this method in the western United States and beyond. But for a forest to grow, dropped seeds have to get into the soil and germinate (发芽), and that can be a challenge. Researchers from Morphing Matter Lab at Carnegie Mellon University might have an answer. Lab director Lining Yao and her colleagues looked at erodium seeds, which have a “drill” that changes shape when wet, using a “tail” to support itself up and push more effectively into the ground. The team created an “E-seed” carrier based on the same principle, which is made from white oak wood that naturally responds to changes in humidity (湿度). They chemically treated the wood to make it softer when wet so it expands more effectively. Moreover, the seed carrier has three tails, making it easier to drill into soil. According to the research Yao published in the journal Nature, the carrier has an “80% drilling success rate on flat land”, making it more effective than erodium seeds in the same conditions. After the carrier burrows, the seed is protected from animals and the natural elements, improving its chances of germination. Yao says the lab has received interest from companies and government agencies worldwide wanting to use the seed carriers in reforestation projects. But she notes specific types of seed carriers must be developed for different locations to accommodate different soils and humidity levels. Providing the technology for projects around the world would be urgent. “Most people who reach out want thousands of seeds, and they want to grow millions of trees in a year,” says Yao. “I started a small team in the lab to think about mass production strategy, but we definitely want to get more support to make this a larger effort.”32. Why did the researchers develop the “E-seed” carrier?A. Because of various natural threats to biodiversity.B. Because of the wildfires caused by climate change.C. Because of difficulties with efficient reforestation.D. Because of the trouble in collecting seeds effectively.33. What do we know about the “E-seed” carrier?A. It is community-based. B. It is nature-inspired.C. It is energy-powered. D. It is profit-driven.34. What does the underlined word “burrows” mean in paragraph 3?A. Flies away. B. Falls into line. C. Floats around. D. Gets into soil.35. What is possible about the “E-seed” carrier according to the last paragraph?A. Its wide applications. B. Its fast development.C. Its being regularly tested. D. Its being hugely profitable.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。Finding the right career path is not an easy task. We were camping near a wood in Owenton for three days for my friend’s birthday. My four friends, our dads, and I were sitting around a campfire. We were all tired from kayaking (划独木舟) five miles in the day. As we sat there sharing our favorite moments from the day, one of my friends said, “Hey. do you guys remember the garden on the trail (小路) that our dads showed us earlier?” There was a note of excitement in his voice. We all nodded. The garden deep in the wood burst with life and color. A handwritten sign placed outside the gate said: Free Tomato Tasting—Help Yourself! How could we forget those perfect, big, red, round tomatoes that were perfectly ripe? The mention of those ripe tomatoes brought a strong desire for their juicy sweetness. We decided that our late-night snack adventure was going to be a tomato hunt despite the long walk down to the garden. My friends and I got up and started walking down the rocky trail. Then, my friend’s dad interrupted, “Wait a minute.” We all turned to him. “The trail can be a bit tricky at night. And some animals might make strange sounds, filling the woods with a little horror.” Despite the genuine concern in his voice, the excitement in our hearts outweighed any sense of caution. We gave him a guarantee that we would be careful. Little did we know that, as we set out on our late-night adventure, our dads had quietly decided to follow us at a distance. In the darkness, they kept a watchful eye on our progress. Slowly but surely, we made our way down with flashlights. But the slightest noise like a sneeze would set us back a little bit. We each took turns leading the way. I felt very nervous and tried my best to keep calm. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式作答。After a while, my legs got tired. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Finally, guided by the memory of the day, we arrived at the garden. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
