“Adlescents’ gal is t figure ut’ Wh am I? Where d I fit in?’ and they begin the separatin frm their parents. Sme f that develpment leads the adlescent t think differently than their parents,” says Slmnsn. “These are natural things that can fuel disagreements.”
In cunseling, Slmnsn ften asks a teen and his r her parents t name a small cnflict they struggle with. She invites the teen t explain his r her perspective (观点) abut the disagreement. Then, she encurages the parents t give their perspective and repeat what their child said. Usually, the parents immediately jump t why the teen’s pinin is wrng. If this happens, Slmnsn will remind them that she wants t hear what they think their child's perspective is, nt whether it’s right r wrng. She als gives the adlescent the same assignment. The aim, she explains, is t develp understanding between them.
Parents ften need t wrk n hw they respnd t their teens when what they see as a mistake ccurs. Instead f respnding in anger, she caches parents t use supprtive statements like “That must have been s stressful. Hw can we prevent that frm happening again?”
Mrever, Slmnsn ften stresses t parents that if they want respect during disagreements frm their child, they’ll need t shw it themselves. Many studies have shwn a rising trend fr greater bdy and weight dissatisfactin amng the yuth wh are heavy r frequent users f scial media. Hwever, these studies are largely crrelatinal (相关性的) rather than causal in nature. Simply put, they did nt determine if frequent use f scial media created prer bdy image amng the users, r whether thse suffering frm bdy image cncerns spent mre time n scial media. This lack f clarity led my students and me t start a study t better understand the causal effects f scial media n bdy image and mental health.

During this same perid, we als assessed their bdy image and ther mental health measures.
Participants were then divided int tw grups. The interventin grup reduced their daily scial media use t ne hur per day. The cntrl grup cntinued t have unlimited use f scial media. After the three-week interventin perid ended, thse wh reduced daily scial media use reprted significantly greater imprvements in appearance satisfactin and weight satisfactin cmpared t thse wh had nt reduced their scial media use.
The results f this study suggest that reducing scial media use t mre mderate levels – abut ne hur per day-is a gd place t start. Replacing scial media use with mre mental health- imprving activities such as physical activity, time in nature, pursuing hbbies, and spending quality time with friends and family can bring even greater mental benefits.
    12. What is the aim f the study cnducted by the authr?
    A. T explre hw ften yuths use scial media.
    B. T determine the verall effects f scial media n mental health.
    C. T measure the level f bdy dissatisfactin amng scial media users.
    D. T study whether frequent scial media use brings bdy image dissatisfactin.
    13. What is the functin f screenshts in the study?
    A. Shwing the time spent n scial media.B. Shwing the scial media platfrms used.
    C. Shwing the emtinal respnses t scial media.D. Shwing the types f scial media cntent viewed.
    14. What is the reprted result frm the interventin grup?
A Mre attentin n physical health.B. Lwer appearance satisfactin.
    C. Mre cncern abut emtinal prblems.D. Higher level f self-satisfactin.
    15. What des the authr think f scial media use accrding t the last paragraph?
    A. It shuld be limited fr mental health.B. It has n impact n mental well-being.
    C. It shuld be frbidden fr physical health.D. It is a cmmn cause f family cnflict.
