Hw we learn accents befre we learn wrds
“N!” That’s the nly wrd we hear in the latest cute baby vide t g viral. But it’s nt the wrds that baby Orla says that has made this vide s ppular. It’s the fact that she clearly imitates (模仿) the distinctive Scuse accent (口音) frm Liverpl.
This nw-famus baby may nly have been brn in 2022, but the different accents f babbling (咿哑声) babies have been studied fr many years. A study frm 2009 fund that French babies tend t cry with a rising intnatin, while German babies’ cries ften have a falling intnatin. Other studies have shwn American and French babies reflecting syllables (音节) frm English and French respectively, and that babies with parents wh speak a tnal (声调的) language, like Mandarin, had a greater range f tnes in their crying.
S why des this happen? As children develp, they practise making the sunds f the language that they hear arund them. It’s natural that they pick up the sunds arund them. In fact, babies start t learn language frm their mther frm three mnths befre birth. Hwever, it’s nt just the language f immediate family and caregivers that has an impact. Prfessr Carline Flccia highlights studies suggesting that children are mre likely t learn the accent f their envirnment than that f a parent wh has an accent that is freign t that lcatin.
Why is this imprtant t knw? Well, what it shws us is that babies are learning language thrugh practice, and that the mre time that parents spend interacting with their children, the greater pprtunity fr this. While babbling babies may nt be able t say many wrds, studies estimate that they can understand many times the number f wrds than thse that they can actually say. Giving babies expsure t a greater number f wrds allws them t better build their vcabulary.
    28. What makes the vide f baby Orla s ppular?
    A. Her cute appearance. B. Her ability t say “N”.
    C. Her clear prnunciatin. D. Her Scuse accent imitatin.
    29. What des the underlined wrd “respectively” mean in paragraph 2?
    A. Individually. B. Apparently. C. Abnrmally. D. Identically.
    30. What des Prfessr Carline Flccia stress?
    A. Babysitters have n effect n children’s accent.
    B. Children will always learn the accent f their parents.
    C. Envirnment has mre impacts n babies’ language learning.
    D. Children are mre likely t learn the accent f the freigners.
    31. What des the passage imply abut babies’ language learning abilities?
    A. Babies can nly understand a limited number f wrds.
    B. Mre interactins can develp babies’ language learning.
    C. Babies’ babbling is nt an indicatin f their language learning.
    D. Babies’ language learning is nt affected by parental interactin.

A new study predicts nearly 75% f us will face extreme weather in 20 years. “In the best case, we predict that rapid changes will affect 1.5 billin peple,” says physicist Bjørn Samset frm Nrway. Otherwise, climate scientist Carley Iles and her clleagues’mdeling finds that if we cntinue n ur current curse, these dangerus changes will hit 70 percent f the Earth’s ppulatin. Their mdeling als suggests that much f what’s t cme is already lcked in. Samset advises preparing fr unexpected extreme events in the next 1-2 decades.
We’ve already lived thrugh examples f these extremes. Data frm Eurpe’s climate service Cpernicus shws Earth just had its httest Nrthern Hemisphere summer n recrd. The Suthern Hemisphere has been experiencing a recrd-breaking warm winter t. This glbal temperature increase has brught with it fatal fires, flds, strms, and drughts that are destrying crps and leading t increasingly widespread hunger, creating favrable cnditins fr the spread f mre diseases as well.“Like peple living in a war zne with the cnstant sunds f bmbs and guns, we are becming deaf t what shuld be alarm bells,”says climate scientist Jennifer Francis.
With extreme emissins cuts we can reduce sme f these impacts, but this will cause sme regins mre immediate issues t.“While cleaning the air is critical fr health reasns, air pllutin has als masked sme f the effects f glbal warming,”explains prfessr Laura Wilcx frm England.“But nt acting means these wrsening weather extremes will likely impact mst f us within the very near future.”
“These cnclusins emphasize the need fr bth cntinued mitigatin ( 缓解) and adaptatin t ptentially unexpected changes ver the next 20 years even under a lw-emissins cnditin,”writes Iles.
    32. What can help t reduce the impact f extreme weather changes?
    A. Building mre disaster preventin prjects.
    B. Reducing greenhuse gas emissins t a great extent.
    C. Increasing the use f renewable energy surces.
    D. Imprving early warning systems fr extreme weather.
    33. Why are peple getting deaf t extreme weather?
    A. As a result f scial and ecnmic pressures.
    B. Because f the media’s ver-reprting f extreme weather.
    C. Because peple have experienced s many weather extremes.
    D. Due t imprved technlgy that can better predict extreme weather.
    34. What des the authr imply in the last paragraph?
    A. The side effects f emissin cuts.
    B. The benefits f glbal cperatin.
    C. The serius situatin f the future climate changes.
    D. Other measures t slw dwn climate change.
    35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title?
    A. What t d with disasters.
    B. Preparing fr extreme weather.
    C. Measures t reduce emissins.
    D. Hw t fight against extreme events.

I was lking at myself in the mirrr when my sister apprached. Her eyes shne with a mixture f cncern and admiratin as she gently tuched my hair. She expressed her wrry that I shuldn’t have t sacrifice anything fr her, but I reassured her that this was abut us standing tgether, n matter what. She smiled thrugh her tears, and at that mment, I knew I was ding the right thing. Taking a deep breath, I picked up the razr. When ur parents returned hme, they were initially shcked by my new lk but sn recgnized the lve and intentin behind it, feeling inspired by ur bnd.
“It’s beautiful. Please als help shave ur heads,”ur parents smiled. Tears welled up in my eyes as I felt their supprt and understanding. They had always taught us t be true t urselves and supprt each ther. With their encuragement, I shaved their heads t. In the fllwing days, when we tk my sister ut, many peple seemed t sense what ur family was ging thrugh and ffered us friendly smiles. Rather than laughing, my classmates supprted me. Tgether, we went thrugh the hardest time in ur lives, and luckily, my sister finally fully recvered. With hair grwing back, we were reminded that tgether we culd vercme life’s tugh challenges.
