When it cmes t an art gallery, a cave seems a strange chice. Many ancient cave paintings, which mark the first knwn examples f artwrk by prehistrical humans, are s deep under the grund that it wuld have taken extrardinary effrt t view them. S, if yu’re an ancient artist, what might inspire yu t paint scenes f life? As it turns ut, Israeli archaelgists may have figured ut the answer. The artists were tripping —literally.
Accrding t a new paper in “Time and Mind: The Jurnal f Archaelgy, Cnsciusness and Culture”, the humans wh ventured int these undergrund places during the Upper Palelithic (50,000 t 12,000 years ag) wuld have needed t light trches in rder t see what they were ding. In the prcess, they wuld have reduced the amunt f xygen in the caves, inducing hypxia (缺氧) in their brains. That, in turn, wuld have put them in a state f changed cnsciusness, experiencing excitement, ut-f-bdy experiences and even hallucinatins (幻觉). These different states f cnsciusness culd have been a cause fr creating cave art seen as a way t cmmunicate with things n the ther side f the wall.
“We discuss the significance f caves in lcal wrld views and claim that entering these deep, dark envirnments was a cnscius chice, mtivated by an understanding f the transfrmative nature f an undergrund, xygen-lack space,” the authrs write. The researchers suggest that caves and rck shelters are likely t have been viewed as drs t an undergrund wrld assciated with prsperity and grwth. They indicate that the rck face was seen as a “tissue” cnnecting the here and nw and the wrld beynd, “allwing early humans t maintain their cnnectedness with the universe”. The humans wh used them wuld have viewed the caves as sacred (神圣的) spaces, lcatins that deserved awe and respect.
“It was nt the decratin that demnstrated the significance f caves,” the authrs write. “Rather, the significance f the chsen caves was the reasn fr their decratin.”
    24. What des the authr think “The artists were tripping.”?

    B. The caves themselves mattered cmpared t the art creatin.

In a mve aimed at reducing greenhuse gas emissins t help fight the glbal climate crisis; the Dutch city f Haarlem is set t becme the first in the wrld t ban advertisements fr meat. Beginning in 2024, advertisements fr meat will be frbidden n buses, shelters, r screens, in Haarlem’s public spaces.
Accrding t The Guardian, a third f all emissins cntributing t glbal heating cme frm fd prductin, with meat prducing duble the pllutin f plant-based fds. Frests are cleared t make way fr animal pastures (牧草地), and nitrgen-rich fertilizers that help grw plants t feed animals can damage the zne layer (臭氧层), as well as create water pllutin. Animals als prduce large quantities f greenhuse gases.
“Meat is just as harmful t the envirnment as fssil fuels, and we can’t tell citizens there’s a climate crisis and at the same time encurage them t buy prducts that are part f the cause,” said Ziggy Klazes, a cuncillr fr the GrenLinks party. “It is a signal, if the ban is picked up natinally, that wuld nly be very nice,” she added. Hwever, the meat sectr and sme rganisatins weren’t pleased with the ban. A spkespersn fr the Central Organisatin fr the Meat Sectr argued the ban was an issue f free speech.
Despite the disagreements abut the ban frm critics, the mve may d the trick. Fr example, taxes n sugary drinks t help cntrl besity rates in Califrnia cities, including Berkeley and San Francisc, als received pushback when they first launched. In practice, hwever, Berkeley reprted a 21% decrease in cnsumptin just a year fllwing the tax. After three years, the cnsumptin f sugary drinks drpped t 50% and mineral water increased by 29%.
A plant-based diet is prbably the biggest way t reduce yur impact n Earth, nt just greenhuse gases, but glbal acidificatin, land use, water use, etc.
    28. Why was the meat advertisement banned in Haarlem?
    A. T advcate a plant-based diet.B. T help deal with climate issues.
    C. T imprve the quality f meat.D. T beautify the image f the city.
    29. What des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
    A. The causes f water pllutin.B. The prcess f meat prductin.
    C. The majr reasn fr glbal heating.D. The negative impact f meat prductin.
    30. What is Ziggy Klazes’attitude twards the ban?
    A. Dubtful.B. Unclear.C. Hesitant.D. Favrable.
    31. Why des the authr mentin the example in paragraph 4?
    A. T prmte zer-sugar drinks. B. T prve the effectiveness f the ban.
    C. T cnfirm the impact f the human diet. D. T call fr higher taxes n meat prductin.
    D

It fund the mss survived in this Mars-like envirnment, and was able t regenerate under nrmal grwth cnditins, even after seven days f expsure.
“These experiments represent an imprtant first step, but they d nt shw that the mss culd be a significant surce f xygen under Martian cnditins, nr d they shw that the desert mss culd reprduce in the Martian cntext,” McDaniel said. “Implying that mss, r any ther pineering species, is ready t terrafrm (行星地球化) Mars, r any ther uter planet, is an verstatement.” Zupanska added.
Dr. Wiger f Wageningen University, als raised cncerns, including that temperatures n the red planet rarely gt abve freezing, making utdr plant grwth impssible, while the new study did nt use Mars-like sil. “The msses were treated under Mars circumstances fr a maximum f several days and then regrwn under Earth cnditins n sand,” he said. “This, f curse, desn’t shw at all they can grw under Mars cnditins.”
Hwever, Prf. Edward Guinan f Villanva University in the US described the study as impressive. “This extremtlerant mss culd prmise t be a pineer plant fr Mars clnizatin,” he said, althugh he nted the mss wuld need water t grw.
“We have a lt f things t d,” he said. “But this lwly desert mss ffers hpe fr making small prtins f Mars habitable fr humankind in the future.
    32. What des the authr want t illustrate by mentining the ptates?
    A. The ptates played a crucial rle in the film.
    B. The mss led t survival f the ptates n Mars.
    C. The mss may survive n Mars like these ptates.
    D. The success f the film resulted frm the plt abut ptates.
    33. What can be implied frm what McDaniel and Zupanska said?
    A. The mss has a lng way t be a Martian plant.
    B. It is unlikely that the earth species can grw n Mars.
    C. The experiments abut the mss were a cmplete success.
    D. They will research int reprducing the mss in the Martian cntext.
    34. Which ne is right abut the characteristic f the mss in the text?
    A. Resistant t water.B. Adaptable t Martian sil.
    C. Capable f prducing xygen n Mars.D. Regenerative under Earth cnditin.
    35. What is the main idea f the text?
    A. Can Mars actually becme a secnd Earth?
    B. Can scientists create a set-up similar t Mars?
    C. Can a mss becme a pineer living n Mars?
    D. Can researchers make it t Mars clnizatin?

    My favrite class
Amng all the classes I have attended, including math, science, and histry, my favrite class is the English lessn n Shakespeare.
During this class, we read excerpts frm Rme and Juliet. Our teacher, Ms. Wang, passinately explained the themes f lve and fate, making the stry cme alive. She als encuraged us t act ut scenes, which added an exciting element t ur learning. I lve this lessn in that the rich language and deep emtins in Shakespeare’s wrk inspire me t think creatively. Besides, acting ut the scenes allws me t engage with the characters and understand their mtivatins better.
Overall, this engaging English lessn deepens my understanding f literature and enhances my appreciatin fr strytelling, making it my favrite class.
