We tested 100 cats frm the center with catnip and several ther plants we had heard might have a similar effect. It turned ut that abut 30% f them did nt care fr catnip, but fr ther plants. Tw f these plants are silver vine and Tatarian hneysuckle. When the tw plants were ffered t the 32 cats wh did nt like catnip, we nticed that 81% f them did lve at least ne f thse plants. Silver vine was the mst ppular plant, even mre ppular than catnip! Abut 80% f all the cats lved silver vine—smelling this plant made them really happy. Silver vine was als the plant mst lved by the cats wh did nt like catnip.
There're hundreds f chemical cmpunds (化合物) in plants. We tested which f them attracted the cats. The result suggests that cats respnd nt nly t nepetalactne, the cat-attracting cmpund in catnip, but als t nine ther chemical cmpunds, and the jyful respnse nly happens when they smell enugh f the cmpunds in plants.
Actually, ne f the cat-attracting cmpunds is als prduced by animals. We believe they may use it t cmmunicate with each ther thrugh smell.

Imagine yu gt a bad grade n a test. What kind f thughts wuld be running thrugh yur head? When smething difficult like this happens, a lt f us will be hard n urselves. Nw imagine it were yur friend wh gt a bad grade—what wuld yu say t him? Mst peple say that they wuld be much kinder t their friend and wuld say smething supprtive. They wuld shw their friend cmpassin, which means they wuld feel what their friend was feeling and wish t help him. When peple shw the same level f cmpassin t themselves, they are practising self-cmpass n.
One way t think f self-cmpassin is by breaking it dwn int three parts. The first part is called mindfulness. Mindfulness just means being hnest abut hw yu are feeling withut pretending (假装) that everything is kay, and withut exaggerating the situatin. Fr example, imagine yu have plans t g t the beach n the weekend. When it is time t g, it starts t rain and yu cannt g. A mindful respnse might be t say, “I am disappinted that I can't g t the beach tday”, rather than “I d nt care, I did nt even want t g t the beach”, r “This is the wrst day ever!”
The secnd part f self-cmpassin is called cmmn humanity Failure, imperfectin and disappintment are part f the shared human experience. Cmmn humanity reminds us that we are nt alne in hw we are feeling, and it can make us feel mre cnnected with thers arund us.
The third part f self- cmpassin is called kindness. It can help t think abut what yu might say t a gd friend r what a gd friend might say t yu. Yu can als take actins t supprt yur bdy and mind, like getting enugh sleep r watching a funny mvie.
Sme peple wrry that if they are kind t themselves, they will nt try t d challenging things. But being self- cmpassinate des nt mean that yu d nt want t make changes. It just means that, while yu are ding smething difficult yu can supprt yurself rather than beat yurself up. Reminding yurself that we all find new tasks challenging, and that we all might fail smetimes, can help us be less discuraged and mre mtivated t imprve urselves.
Being self-cmpassinate can set the stage (舞台) fr better health, relatinships and general well-being. Hwever, it is als imprtant t remember that when yu are kind t yurself, the bad feelings and difficult situatins will nt g away, and they will always be a part f life. The mre yu pen yur heart t this reality instead f cntinually fighting against it, the mre yu will be able t feel cmpassin fr yurself.
30. Peple may need t be self-cmpassinate when _______.
A. helping a friend ut f truble
B. perfrming prly n the stage
C. being verprud f successfulness
D. making great prgress in their wrk
31. The wrd “exaggerating” in Paragraph 2 mst prbably means _______.
A. influencing B. examiningC. verstating D. recnsidering
32. What d we knw abut self-cmpassin frm the passage?
A. Accepting imperfectin helps us practise cmmn humanity
B. Being kind t yurself makes difficult situatins g away
C. Mindfulness may cause us nt t recgnize ur feelings
D. Self-cmpassin means nt challenging urselves.
33. What is the writer's main purpse in writing this passage?
A. T encurage peple t supprt their friends in need.
B. T remind peple that self-cmpassin has tw sides
C. T stress the imprtance f the cnnectin between peple
D. T suggest treating yurself like yu're yur wn best friend
