A grund-breaking study led by Dr. Mark Wng f The University f Western Australia, has prvided the first glbal picture f insect activity patterns acrss the fundamental day-night cycle.
Thrugh the extensive research, they’ve finally been able t prvide a definitive answer t the age-ld questin f whether there are mre insects ut at night than during the day. Their glbal analysis nt nly shws that insect activity rises by a third (31. 4%) during the night n average, but reveals key factrs driving patterns in insect activity acrss the Earth.
The activity patterns f insects acrss the day-night cycle were a surprisingly deficient area in eclgy, because such patterns cannt be detected by cmmn methds used fr sampling insects. Fr example, sweep netting can catch nly active insects, while light traps d nt wrk as well during the day as they d during the night.
The researchers vercame this challenge by identifying studies that sampled insects during the day and night with traps that specifically caught mving insects. After cmbing thrugh thusands f studies they identified 99 studies spanning frm 1959 t 2022, which had used these methds t dcument insect activity pattern acrss diverse landscapes. The ttal number f insects bserved exceeded 3 millin individuals.
Ncturnal (夜间活动的) activity was mre cmmn in rivers and streams. In this habitat, there culd be twice as many insects active during the night. In cntrast, land-based insects generally had higher day activity, especially in grasslands, where the number f insects ut culd be three times during the day.
These cntrasting patterns in ecsystem may reflect strategies fr predatr (捕食者) avidance. Fish tend t hunt insects during the day, whereas ncturnal animals such as bats make life n land at night. The analysis als highlighted the influence f envirnmental factrs such as temperature n insect activity at the glbal scale. They fund peak levels f ncturnal activity in the warmer regins f the wrld, as mre insects likely sught shelter frm the heat f the day.
8. What des the study fcus n?
A. The species f insects.B. The living habits f insects.
C. The insects’ day-night cycle.D. The decline in insect number.
9. Hw did the researchers cme t the cnclusin?
A. Using creative ways t catch active insects.B. Analyzing sme dcumented data in histry.
C. Travelling t diverse landscapes t btain data.D. Cmparing the data they gt during day and night.
10. What des the underlined wrd “deficient” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Blank.B. Understudied.C. Well-explred.D. Debatable.
11. Which f the fllwing may explain the insect activity patterns?
A. Physical structure.B. Habitat changes.
C. Human’s hunting preference.D. Eclgical influences.

But neither genes nr clinically tested exercises can prtect peple frm the reality that life is hard. During the pandemic, Sants fund herself verwrked, exhausted and nearly clse t burnut. She was frtunate enugh t take a hliday and practice the strategies. The experience has been an imprtant reminder fr Sants that even the mst scientifically supprted exercises can't help if yu dn't d them.
“The strategies I teach wrk, ” she says. “But yu have t make sure yu' re fllwing them and putting them int practice, which takes regular wrk and effrt. ”
