It’s a classic stry: A kid is frced t learn an instrument frm a yung age, they play it thrughut their childhd, and they develp a bittersweet relatinship with it. Is the cnstant battle between the lve fr the music and the hate fr the cnstant challenge wrth the fight? Fr me, it was.
I started playing the pian when I was fur-that was 15 years ag! This was huge cmmitment, s there must have been smething wrth hlding n t, right?
The easy guess is that I was purely in lve with music and pian. Althugh that’s the sweeter tale, it’s a bit mre cmplicated. I struggled a lt with pian. Family and peers were, at least in my wn head, cnstantly placed beside me in cmpetitin. I felt pressure t be the best in rder t prve smething t thers-and mre devastatingly (破坏性地) t prve smething t myself. The seed f my musical interest was grwn in the sunlight f cmpetitin and dubt. Hate spruted (滋生) when my self-criticism hit t hard.
It’s difficult t learn t lve smething that didn’t riginate frm lve. Fr a while, pian was mre f an annyance than a hbby. But smehw, lve grew. It was deeply buried. But it was there, and by high schl,it was strng enugh that when I was truly n the verge f quitting any kind f frmal training. I fund the strength t hld n tighter, and dig further. I switched teachers, and gt incredibly lucky with ne wh helped me tunnel int what I lved. I learned pieces fr myself, I cmpsed fr myself, and I fund cnfidence nt because I gt “gd enugh,” but because I learned that anything I had was gd enugh.
The lve and hate I’ve had fr the pian were bth planted and grwn. If yu t have learned t hate smething, remember that with cmmitment, it can be uprted, and lve can make a hme in its place. There is always time. There is always rm.
24. What des the authr want t shw by telling a classic stry?
A. The benefits f music.
B Kids’ struggle in learning instruments.
C. Kids’ bittersweet childhd.

B. She never treated it as her hbby.
C. She was in pure lve with music and pian.
D. She nce experienced great pressure frm herself.
26. What helped the authr find cnfidence?
A. Her attitude.B. Her training.
C. Her cmprmise.D. Her achievement.
27. What message is mainly delivered in the passage?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Lve is a thing that grws.
C. Cntent is better than riches.
D. Chance favrs the prepared mind.

Sme peple say they “never frget a face.” But what des that saying mean? Is there really n limit t the number f faces a persn can remember? A new study frm a grup f researchers at the University f Yrk in England has fund that, n average, peple can remember as many as 5,000 faces. They published their findings n facial recgnitin this mnth in the Prceedings f The Ryal Sciety B, Bilgical Sciences.
Rb Jenkins wrks in the psychlgy department at the University f Yrk. He said the researchers’ study centered n “the number f faces peple actually knw”. The study suggests ur facial recgnitin abilities help us t deal with the many different faces we see n the screens, as well as thse we knw, like family and friends.
Fr the human study, peple spent ne hur writing dwn as many faces frm their persnal lives as pssible. Sme examples may include peple they went t schl with, peple they wrk with and family members. Then, they wrte dwn famus faces they knw, such as actrs, pliticians and ther public peple.
The results shwed that the participants(参与者) knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces. Jenkins said ne explanatin may be that sme peple have a natural ability fr remembering faces. “There are differences in hw much attentin peple pay t faces and hw well they prcess the infrmatin,” he said. Jenkins als said it culd be because f different scial envirnments. Sme peple may have grwn up in mre ppulated places. S, they may have had mre scial cntact thrughut their lives.
The peple in the study included 25 men and wmen students frm tw universities. They were between 18 and 61 years ld. Researchers think age may be an interesting area fr further research. Jenkins said it is pssible that we gather mre faces thrughut ur lifetime. But, he added, there als may be an age at which we start t find it harder t remember all f thse faces.

When yu have t cancel yur Thanksgiving plans due t the spread f the COVID-19, yu may find yurself craving cmpaninship as much as that pumpkin pie. That’s because parts f the brain respnd t lneliness much like they react t hunger, accrding t a study in Nature Neurscience.
Researchers frm the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy scanned the brains f 40 healthy, scial yung adults after 10 hurs f either fasting (禁食) r scial islatin (隔离). They fund that after being alne, participants’ neurlgical respnses t scial signals were similar t hungry peple reacting t fd — that is, certain areas f the brain linked t desire were turned n t start wrking.
Fr an islated persn, a picture f peple laughing tgether caused the same areas f the brain t light up as when a hungry persn lked at a big plate f pasta.
“Just like hunger is an unpleasant sensatin that mtivates us t seek ut fd and thirst mtivates us t seek ut water, lneliness is a bilgical need that mtivates us t recnnect t thers,” Hlt-Lunstad tld Insider.
Researchers were surprised t find that peple wh were prevented frm scializing became much mre fcused n that need, and less reactive t hunger. As their lneliness increased, they became less respnsive t images f fd.
These latest findings suggest that the relatinship between fd and lneliness might be mre cmplicated than we thught, despite the ppular pinin f stress-eating t cpe with scial islatin. Mre research is needed t understand the cmplex ways peple deal with lneliness.
Studies like this can help scientists understand hw the brain prcesses lneliness, and pssibly reduce the negative cnsequences. Hwever, althugh lneliness may be similar t hunger, fixing it isn’t as easy as serving smene a hearty dinner because peple are unique and they need varying levels f scial interactins t meet their needs.
32. The underlined wrd “craving” in the first paragraph can be replaced by .
A. avidingB. desiringC. preferringD. ignring
33. Researchers scanned the brains f the yung adults .
A. t find their brain respnses t bth lneliness and hunger
B. t prvide explanatins fr their feeling lnely and hungry
C. t find hw lneliness can have a negative impact n health
D. after they have been hungry and scially islated fr 10 hurs
34. What cnclusin can be drawn frm what Hlt-Lunstad said in Paragraph 4?
A. Hunger is an unpleasant sensatin.
B. Hunger and thirst mtivate us t feed urselves.
C. Scializing is suppsed t be basic human need as it is.
D. The effects f lneliness n health are cmparable t ther factrs.
35. What des the last paragraph imply?
A. Lneliness may be fixed just as hunger is satisfied.
B. Situatins f lneliness are cmplicated and hard t cpe with.
C. Scientists have understd hw the brain prcesses lneliness.
D. Lneliness is such a cmmn and serius prblem that we all have t suffer.
