Fish Ears Tell Fish Tales
Fish have ears. Really. They’re quite small and have n pening t the utside wrld carrying sund thrugh the bdy. Fr the past seven years, Simn Thrrld, a university prfessr, has been examining fish ears, small rund ear bnes called tliths (耳石).
As fish grw, s d their tliths. Each day, their tliths gain a ring f calcium carbnate (碳酸钙). By lking thrugh a micrscpe and cunting these rings, Thrrld can determine the exact age f a yung fish. Ring cunting is nthing new t fish scientists. But Thrrld has turned t a new directin. They’re examining the chemical elements (元素) f each tlith ring.

It als says smething abut water temperature, which determines hw much f these elements will gather within each tlith ring.

In the case f the Atlantic craker, a ppular saltwater fd fish, Thrrld and his assistant have successfully fllwed the travelling f yung fish frm mid-cean t the cast, a jurney f many hundreds f miles.
This is imprtant t managers in the fish industry, wh knw nearly nthing abut the whereabuts f the yung fish fr mst fd fish in the cean. Eager t learn abut his technlgy, fish scientists are nw lending Thrrld their ears.
77. What can we learn abut fish ears frm the text?
A. They are small sft rings.
B. They are nt seen frm the utside.
C. They are penings nly n fd fish.
D. They are nt used t receive sund.

B. Trees als have tliths.
C. Their grwth rings are very small.
D. They bth have grwth rings.

C. We can knw mre abut fish and their living envirnment.
D. Scientists can knw exactly hw ld a fish is.
