New research suggests that dgs might be able t help save diseased citrus trees.
A grup f scientists trained dgs t use their sense f smell t detect a crp disease called citrus-greening. The disease has affected range, lemn and grapefruit trees in the American states f Flrida, Califrnia and Texas.
The dgs can detect the disease weeks t years befre it appears n tree leaves and rts, the researchers reprt. A study n their findings was published recently in the Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences. The reprt says using dgs is als faster, less cstly and mre exact than having peple cllect hundreds f leaves fr lab analysis.
Timthy Gttwald is a researcher with the U. S. Department f Agriculture and a c-writer f the study. He tld The Assciated Press, “This technlgy is thusands f years ld-the dg’s nse. We’ve just trained dgs t hunt new prey.”
Citrus-greening is caused by a bacteria (细菌) that is spread by a tiny insect that feeds n the leaves and stems f citrus trees. Once a tree is infected (感染), there is n cure. The disease has als hurt citrus crps in Central and Suth America and Asia. In ne experiment invlving grapefruit trees in Texas, trained dgs were crrect 95 percent f the time in telling the difference between newly infected trees and healthy nes. “The earlier yu detect a disease, the better chance yu have at stpping an epidemic (流行病) by remving infected trees,” Gttwald said.
Matte Garbeltt studies plants at the University f Califrnia, Berkeley. He says the new research shws that dgs can detect an infectin well befre current methds. Garbeltt has been invlved in similar research but had n part in the new study.
Laura Sims is a plant scientist with Luisiana Tech University. She praised the steps taken t find ut if the dgs were detecting the bacteria itself r a plant’s reactin t an infectin. T d that, the researchers infected different kinds f unrelated plants with the bacteria in a labratry. The dgs were still able t pick ut the infected plants.
Gttwald said, “Yu’ve seen dgs wrking in airprts, detecting drugs and explsives. Maybe sn yu will see them wrking n mre farms. ”
8. Accrding t the research, trained dgs can ________.
A. help infected trees recver frm diseasesB. recgnize a crp disease in its early stage

根据第三段中“The dgs can detect the disease weeks t years befre it appears n tree leaves and rts, the researchers reprt. (研究人员报告称,在这种病害出现在树叶和树根部数周甚至数年之前,狗狗就可以探测到它。)”可知,受过训练的狗狗可以在农作物疾病的早期就将其识别出来。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“A grup f scientists trained dgs t use their sense f smell t detect a crp disease called citrus-greening. (一群科学家训练狗狗利用它们的嗅觉来检测一种叫做柑橘绿病的农作物疾病。)”和第五段中“Citrus-greening is caused by a bacteria (细菌) that is spread by a tiny insect that feeds n the leaves and stems f citrus trees. Once a tree is infected (感染), there is n cure. (柑橘变绿是由一种微小昆虫传播的细菌引起的,这种昆虫以柑橘树的叶子和茎为食。一旦树被感染,就没有治愈的方法。)”由用受过训练的狗狗可以找出患病的农作物,可知,划线词new prey指的是“受感染的植物”。故选A项。

The idea that richer cuntries are happier may seem intuitively (直觉地) bvius. Hwever, in1974, research by ecnmist Richard Easterlin fund therwise. He discvered that while individuals with higher incmes were mre likely t be happy, this did nt hld at a natinal level. In the United States, fr example, average incme per persn rse steadily between 1946 and 1970, but reprted happiness levels shwed n psitive lng-term trend.; in fact, they declined (下降) between 1060 and 1970. These differences between natin-level and individual results gave rise t the term “Easterlin paradx”: the idea that a higher rate f ecnmic grwth des nt result in higher lng-term happiness.
Having access t additinal incme seems t nly prvide a temprary surge (激增) in happiness. Since a certain minimum (最小的) incme is needed fr basic necessities, it’s pssible that the happiness bst frm extra cash isn’t that great nce yu rise abve the pverty line. This wuld explain Easterlin’s findings in the United States and ther develped cuntries. He argued that life satisfactin des rise with average incmes but nly in the shrt term.
Recent research has challenged the Easternlin paradx, hwever. In 2013, scilgists Ruut Veenhven and Flris Vergunst cnducted a study using statistics (统计数据) frm the Wrld Database f Happiness. Their analysis revealed a psitive crrelatin between ecnmic grwth and happiness. Anther study by the University f Michigan fund that there is n maximum wealth threshld (门槛) at which mre mney stps cntributing t yur happiness: “If there is a satiatin pint, we are yet t reach it.” The study’s findings suggested that every extra dllar yu earn makes yu happier. With a much debate abut the relatinship between mney and happiness, it’s clear that happiness itself is a cmplex cncept and depends n many factrs.
Accrding t psychlgists (心理学家) Selin Kesebir and Shigehir Oishi, happiness als depends n hw yur incme cmpares t the peple arund yu. They argue that a cuntry’s ecnmic grwth nly makes its citizens happier if wealth is evenly distributed (分配). In develping cuntries with high incme inequality — where the rich get richer and the pr get prer — average happiness tends t drp because nly relatively few peple benefit frm the ecnmic grwth. This suggests that gvernments shuld cnsider cnducting plicies t ensure mre equal distributin f wealth. The happier peple are, the mre prductive they are likely t becme, thus leading t imprved ecnmic utcmes at the individual and natinal levels.
There is cntinuing debate abut the link between wealth and happiness, with arguments bth fr and against the belief that richer cuntries are happier. Hwever, it is clear that wealth alne isn’t enugh t make us happy. The effect f incme inequality n happiness shws that happiness is a scial respnsibility. We need t remember the psitive effects f genersity, selflessness, and building scial cnnectins. Perhaps ur fcus shuld be less n hw much mney we have, and mre n hw we use it.
12. Accrding t the passage, Easterlin Paradx refers t ______.
A. the fact that the mre mney, the happier peple will feel
B. the suggestin that mney shuld be given the tp pririty(优先)
C. the questin hw ecnmic utcmes are distributed natinwide
D. the pinin that higher incme desn’t necessarily generate happiness
13. The wrd “satiatin” in paragraph 3 is clsest in meaning t “________”.
A. satisfactinB. anxietyC. survivalD. cnfidence
14. What is the majr reasn fr peple’s unhappiness related t mney?
A. Mney nt enugh.B. Mney nt fairly distributed.
C. Rich peple richerD. Unequal mney paid fr equal wrk.
15. Which f the fllwing might be best title f this passage?
A. It’s all relativeB. Easternlin paradx
C. The ecnmics f happinessD. Rising incme, rising happiness
D 13. A 14. B 15. C
第一段最后一句“These differences between natin-level and individual results gave rise t the term “ Easterlin paradx”: the idea that a higher rate f ecnmic grwth des nt result in higher lng-term happiness.(国家水平和个人结果之间的这些差异导致了“伊斯特林悖论”一词的出现:即较高的经济增长率并不会带来较高的长期幸福感。)”
根据划线词上文“Anther study by the University f Michigan fund that there is n maximum wealth threshld (门槛) at which mre mney stps cntributing t yur happiness: “If there is a satiatin pint, we are yet t reach it.”
根据第四段中“They argue that a cuntry’s ecnmic grwth nly makes its citizens happier if wealth is evenly distributed (分配). In develping cuntries with high incme inequality — where the rich get richer and the pr get prer — average happiness tends t drp because nly relatively few peple benefit frm the ecnmic grwth. (他们认为,一个国家的经济增长只有在财富平均分配的情况下才会让国民更幸福。在收入高度不平等的发展中国家——富人越来越富,穷人越来越穷——平均幸福感往往会下降,因为只有相对较少的人从经济增长中受益。)”可知,只有财富平均分配了人才会开心,即金钱分配不均是造成人们对金钱不快乐的主要原因。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“There is cntinuing debate abut the link between wealth and happiness, with arguments bth fr and against the ntin that richer cuntries are happier. Hwever, it is clear that wealth alne isn’t enugh t make us happy. (关于财富与幸福之间的联系,人们仍在争论不休,有人支持,有人反对富裕国家更幸福的观点。然而,很明显,财富本身并不足以使我们幸福。)”以及全文可知,文章主要围绕着经济与幸福相关的话题,所以短文的最佳标题是“幸福的经济学”。故选C。
