A British wman Dr. Mantri, grwing up in India started t ntice his sn, Dhruv, was struggling with simple arithmetic when he was in fifth-grade. After nticing this, she started emplying an abacus (算盘) t help her sn visually cmprehend mathematics.
“I wuld ask him smething like 35 minus 13 and he culdn’t d it.” said Dhruv’s mm Dr. Mantri. “I decided t change the way he lked at numbers,” she said. “An abacus is a tried and tested methd, and the Egyptians used them fr building the pyramid.” In just six days he started t shw prgress with the abacus and wuld g n t becme a whizz kid with numbers, with even his classmates’ parents reaching ut fr help.
She never thught she wuld teach her sn using an abacus, which she used as a child in India and it was always helpful. Within six days she started t ntice a difference and see results. S dramatic was the turnarund, that schl staff asked him t perfrm with the abacus at an assembly, where sme parents even came t ask fr advice n using it fr their kids.
IT specialist Dr. Mantri said the humble abacus can be used fr calculatins int the trillins and kids enjy learning n it because it’s like a game. “It becmes a playing tl fr yunger children, fr it feels like a game. I think the success cmes because children can tuch and feel an abacus and visualize them.” She added.
By the age f 12 Dhruv was giving nline cyber security seminars and is nw pursuing a career in data science and analytics. Dhruv has nw landed an apprenticeship (实习) at an internatinal firm. During the fur-year apprenticeship, he will spend ne day a week studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Glasgw Calednian University. “He is s cnfident nw and I am s prud,” she said, with Dhruv adding “I dn’t think my teachers wuld have guessed that I wuld be fllwing a career in data science at that time.”

Peple trained t detect lies ften rely n multiple signs, such as eye cntact, length f respnses and the details in what peple say, but studies have shwn that assessing a wide range f behaviral infrmatin can make it harder t decide if smene is lying. Brun Verschuere at the University f Amsterdam and his clleagues wndered whether slely fcusing n the detail f statements culd prvide mre cnsistent results.
T test this idea, researchers asked 44 students t g fr a walk r steal frm a mck(模仿的)crime. Students were instructed t lie if they cmmitted the fake theft.
Next, the researchers recruited 171 peple t watch six truthful and six deceptive(欺骗的) interviews frm these recrdings, ranking interviewees’ eye cntact and detail level. The results revealed that bth truth-tellers and liars averted (转移) their gaze a similar amunt, but truthful statements were substantially mre detailed than deceptive nes, suggesting the latter is a mre useful way t tell that smene is lying.
The researchers then asked 405 peple t judge the true nature f six truthful and six deceptive statements randmly chsen frm the interviews. Arund half f the participants used multiple cues t identify liars. The remaining participants slely ranked the level f detail in answers n a scale f 1 t 10, with l a 6 r abve cunting as truthful. Thse using multiple cues distinguished lies frm the truth 59% f the time, while thse relying slely n detail achieved 66%.
“Our take is that using just ne cue can prvide a simpler way t judge lies frm the truth,” says Verschuere. Nevertheless, in the real wrld, yu wuld prbably need t cnfirm the accuracy f statements thrugh extra further investigatins r fllw-up questins, he says.
8. Brun Verschuere and his clleagues cnducted the research t cnfirm that__________.
A. behaviral infrmatin played a vital rle in finding ut the truth
B. it’s relatively easier t identify liars by relying nly n the detail f statements
C. truhtellers and liars shared smething in cmmn when perfrming the task
D. peple shuld be trained t detect lies by referring t multiple cues
9. What can we learn frm paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Truthful statements included cnsiderably mre details than deceptive nes.
B. Liars turned away their eyes mre ften than truth—tellers.
C. It’s difficult fr participants t detect liars by using multiple cues like eye cntact.
D. Participants wh relied n ne cue pan distinguish lies frm the truth faultlessly.
10. What did Verschuere think f the real-life applicatin f his research?
A. It had n ptential marketB. It made n sense.
C. It culd be perfectly applied.D. It had sme limitatins.
11. What’s the purpse f the passage?
A. T intrduce readers t the classificatin f fies.
B. T encurage readers t apply the results in real life.
C T infrm readers f scientific findings n detecting liars.
D. T warn readers f psychlgical harm f telling a lie.

In the animal kingdm, mimics (模仿) are nt rare. Stick insects pretend t be twigs. Hawk mth caterpillars resemble pisnus snakes. The examples, thugh, are visual. Auditry mimicry is rarer. Danil Russ f the University f Naples Federic II thinks he has fund a nvel case f it, as he describes in Current Bilgy. Sme bats, he believes, mimic angry bees in rder t scare away wls that might therwise eat them.
Dr. Russ first nticed bat buzzing a few years ag. The nise struck him is similar t the sund f sme bees. He wndered whether bat buzzing was a frm f mimicry which helped t scare ff wuld-be predatrs.
T test this idea he and his clleagues first recrded the buzzing that captured bats made. Then, with prtective clthing, they began the mre dangerus task f recrding the buzzing made by different bees. Cmputer analysis revealed that bees’ and bats’ buzzing were, indeed, similar.
Then the researchers recruited several wls. They put the wls, ne at a time, in an enclsure with branches fr them t stay n, and tw bxes with hles in them. They placed a ludspeaker alngside ne f the bxes and, after the birds had settled in, bradcast thrugh it five secnds f uninterrupted bat buzzing and a similar amunt f insect buzzing three times in a rw fr each nise. As a cntrl, they bradcast in like manner several nn-buzzing sunds made by bats.
During the bradcasts and fr five minutes thereafter, they videed the wls. After analysis, the results were unequivcal. When they heard bth the bat buzzing and the bee buzzing, the wls mved as far frm the speakers as they culd. In cntrast, when the nn-buzzing bat sunds were played, they crept clser.
Dr. Russ believes this is the first reprted case f a mammal using auditry mimicry t scare away a predatr. They strngly suspect, hwever, that it is nt unique. Anecdtes suggest several birds als make buzzing nises when their nests are disturbed. And with the result f the experiment, he therefre predicts that auditry mimicry is far mre widespread than currently realized.
12. What was Dr. Russ’s assumptin f the study?
A. Only sme bats have the capacity f auditry mimicry.
B. The buzzing f bats is similar t the sund f sme bees.
C. Auditry mimicry is rather cmmn in the animal kingdm.
D. Bats imitate the vice f angry bees t frighten away enemies.
13. Hw did Dr. Russ test his idea?
A. By cllecting cmputer data.
B. By cnsulting experts in this field.
C. By referring t ther schlars’ analysis.
D. By cnducting series f scientific experiments.
14. What des the underlined wrd “unequivcal” in paragraph 5 pssibly mean?
A. Disappinting.B. Cntrversial.C. Definite.D. Uncertain.
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Animal Mimicry: Buzz ff
B. Bats: N Mre Victim t Owls
C. A Self-prtectin Behavir amng Animals
D. A New Trick t Scare Away Owls
