I will never frget the tenth summer f childhd with my grandfather in western Nrway at the muntain farm, where my mther was brn. As a by, I always thught peple simply bught whatever they need. Whether Grandfather knw this, I dn’t knw. One day he said, “Cme, I have smething fr yu.”

A recent study f middle schl children shwed that verbal(言语的) abuse by ther children can harm develpment in the brain. The study was a prject f researchers at Harvard Medical Schl in Massachusetts. Researcher Martin Teicher and his team studied yung adults, aged 18 t 25. These yung men and wmen had nt ever been treated in a cruel r vilent way by their parents. The researchers asked the yung peple t rate their childhd expsure t verbal abuse frm bth parents and ther children. Then the researchers perfrmed imaging tests n the brains f the subjects.
The images shwed that the peple wh reprted suffering verbal abuse frm peers in middle schl had underdevelped cnnectins between the left and right side f the brain. The tw sides f the brain are cnnected by a large bundle f cnnecting fibers called the crpus callsum. This was the area that was underdevelped.
The middle schl years are a time when these brain cnnectins are develping. S, unkind, hurtful cmments frm children r adults during this perid have the greatest effect. The researchers tested the mental and emtinal cnditin f all the yung peple in the study. The tests shwed that this same grup f peple had higher levels f fear, depressin, anger and drug abuse than thers in the study.
The researchers published their findings nline n the American Jurnal f Psychiatry’s website.
