Early in my teaching career (事业) , I heard cuntless excuses fr why students didn’t have their hmewrk - mst f these excuses are invented, and many f them are amusing. And, yes, “the dg ate it” was ne f them. As time passed, I grew tired f hearing “I dn’t have my hmewrk because…” And s, I quit accepting any excuse.
When I mved t an inner-city middle schl, I tk my “n-excuse” attitude with me. “N excuses!” I warned my eighth graders n the first day f schl. I cllected hmewrk at the beginning f each class. When a student didn’t have it, I never asked why. Instead, I sighed ludly, shk my head and - with the student lking n - recrded a zer in the grade bk. Sn I became famus in the schl fr being extremely strict.
Then, ne afternn, shrtly after the bell rang, I stepped int the classrm and began t cllect all the students’ hmewrk. When I walked t Anthny, he drpped his head with his lwer lip quivering (颤抖) . “I dn’t have my hmewrk because……”
“N excuse.” I lked at him angrily, thinking there was anther ugly excuse fr being lazy.
My warning stpped Anthny in mid-sentence. His face turned red with embarrassment and he was almst in tears. In that classrm f 25 students, there was dead silence.
As usual, I sighed heavily, shk my head and recrded a zer in the grade bk. After that, I mved t anther student. One by ne, they handed in their hmewrk silently. After the class, still in anger, I strmed ut f the classrm and int my ffice. I never believed Anthny had a really gd reasn fr failing t finish his hmewrk. Hw culd a student wh lst interest in their study and made up excuses fr their laziness be frgiven? Never. And I wuld never give up my “N excuse” attitude. I wuld never listen t their stupid excuses.
