    Dgs Helping Stressed Out Students
Sme peple say that dgs are man’s best friend -- gd 31 , lyal and lveable. Of curse, they can be mre than just a pet as certain 32 are excellent wrking dgs t. We knw abut the amazing help that guide dgs give t blind peple and, mre recently, a new 33 has been fund fr the animals -- wrking as therapy dgs in universities.
Research by Washingtn State University in the US, has fund spending time with a dg can help stressed ut students. Patricia Pendry frm the university tld the BBC that a study f 300undergraduates had fund weekly hur-lng sessins with dgs brught t the university by prfessinal dg trainers had made stressed students at high risk f 34 failure r drpping ut feel relaxed and accepted. The dgs helped them t 35 , learn and remember infrmatin.
I knw that tuching a dg gently helps me t relax; ther research has shwn that petting animals can reduce stress hrmne levels and 36 , s it makes sense t intrduce them int an envirnment where peple are stressed. Sean Cughlan frm BBC writes that arund 1,000 campuses in the US already use therapy pets and it’s becming mre 37 in the UK. Fr example, The University f Middlesex has emplyed “canine (犬的) teaching assistants” t help stp lnely students drpping ut. Fina Slithers, head f clinical skills at the university, says that five Labradrs (拉布拉多) had a “strict assessment” t 38 they had the right temperament (牌气). But she adds “it’s hard t describe the 39 f just having a dg lying dwn in the crner f a class.”
Using dgs fr therapy can als help the dgs themselves. In Wales, Swansea University Students’ Unin has used rescued greyhunds (灵缇犬) t help students between exams. Sessins allw mistreated and abandned dgs t 40 with humans and begin t trust them again.
    II. Reading Cmprehensin (45%)

Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext.
Gegraphy is the study f the relatinship between peple and the land. Gegraphers cmpare and cntrast 41 places n the earth. But they als g beynd the individual places and cnsider the earth as a 42 . The wrd gegraphy cmes frm tw Greek 43 , ge, the Greek wrd fr “earth” and graphein, which means “t write”. The English wrd gegraphy 44 “t describe the earth.” Sme gegraphy bks fcus n a small area like a twn r city. Others deal with a state, a regin, a natin, r an 45 cntinent. Many gegraphy bks deal with the whle 46 . Anther way t 47 the study f gegraphy is t distinguish between physical gegraphy and cultural gegraphy. The frmer 48 n the natural wrld; the latter starts with human beings and 49 hw human beings and their envirnment act upn each ther. But when gegraphy is cnsidered as a single subject, 50 branch can neglect the ther. A gegrapher might be 51 as ne wh bserves, recrds, and explains the 52 between places. If all places were 53 there wuld be little need fr gegraphers. We knw, 54 that n tw places are exactly the same. Gegraphy, then, is a pint f view, a 55 way f lking at places.

My sn, Tby,17 mnths ld, has just tested psitive fr COVID-19. He is the first in ur husehld t test psitive, and all the infrmatin prvided fr peple in this situatin is designed fr adults wh are (r shuld be) cncerned abut prtecting their families. Tby, bviusly, cannt cmprehend such advice. He cannt keep a distance frm everybdy else, r eat and wash in a separate rm. We called 911, and the medic we spke t agreed that the fficial guidance didn’t really apply t ur situatin.
Indeed. Nt much we can d. S, here we are, trapped within ur fur walls with a little baby infected with COVED-19, wh cntinues t climb n us, spit in ur faces, lve us and hug us. It seems inevitable that we, and ur elder sn, are ging t get COVID nw. Nt much we can d.
My first reactin, after absrbing his diagnsis (诊断) , was t ck sausages. I didn’t even knw that was my cmfrt fd f chice. Perhaps an afternn crisis wuld have caused a different cking desire? Anyway, a full stmach helped me take stck. Yes, it may nw be inevitable that we’re ging t cntract the very virus we’ve spent a year aviding, but as lng as we dn’t cntract it at the same time, then, hpefully, ne r ther f us will be available t lk after ur kids (thus answering my five-year-ld’s mst pressing cncern: “ wh will make the pudding?”).
S, t minimise asymptmatic transmissin, we’ve pened all the windws. And we’ve decided t wear face cverings whenever we are with Tby. This decisin has been insignificant t him -- I imagine he literally cannt remember life befre masks—but fr me, it’s distressing. I’ve becme accustmed t wearing masks in supermarkets and cffee shps, f curse, but t actually walk arund with half my face cvered in my wn huse is quite anther matter—it is telling me that my hme has been infected. That it’s n lnger a safe space.
And s it was, when I sat dwn t write this clumn, that I ended up writing abut COVID, which is prbably the last thing yu wanted t read. Srry abut that. COVID has clured my thughts tday, even thugh I knw that my wife and children will be fine, and that really we shuld just be grateful we haven’t passed it n t my grandmther.
I predict there will be mre sausages in the mrning.
    56. By repeating the sentence “Nt much we can d” in paragraph 2, the writer implies that ________.
    A. he feels annyedB. he is really helpless
    C. he wants prfessinal supprtD. he needs t keep a distance frm Tby
    57. Accrding t the writer, what did sausages bring t him?
    A. Sadness.B. Appetite.C. Cncern.D. Relief.
    58. Why did wearing masks at hme cause distress t the writer?
    A. It discurages him frm writing abut COVID.
    B. It lets him remember the days befre COVID-19.
    C. It is a reminder f what is happening t his family.
    D. It makes him feel at a lss fr hw t help his sn.
    59. What can be cncluded frm the passage?
    A. The diagnsis leaves the writer’s family in a tugh spt.
    B. The writer is sure that his ther kids wn’t cntract the virus.
    C. Being infected with COVID-19 makes Tby in a bad md.
    D. Sausages have lng been cnsidered by many t be cmfrt fd
    Experiment with Our Fd
Want t ck up a delicius meal? It’s nt just abut the fd. We chat t psychlgist Prf. Charles Spence abut the strange science f gastrphysics.
    What exactly is gastrphystcs?
It’s a cmbinatin f ‘gastrnmy (美食学)’ and ‘psychphysics’, which invlves the scientific study f hw ur experience f fd and drink is affected by ur senses and ur surrundings, nt just the fd itself. It’s a small but grwing area f research which brings tgether psychlgists, neurscientists, marketeers, chefs, prduct designers, and even musicians. S what kinds f things can affect ur sense f taste?
Pretty much everything! Frm the clur and shape f the plates t the weight and material f the cutlery (餐具), thrugh t the shape f the table and the feel f the chair yu’re sitting n. Then there’s the number f peple yu’re with, the md yu’re in, the lighting and backgrund music in the restaurant, and memries assciated with the fd. When yu put all these factrs tgether, it adds up a lt.
What’s the mst surprising way in which ur taste can be influenced?
It’s the idea f snic seasning’, which uses sunds t change the taste f fd. Yu can add as much as 15 per cent extra sweetness, surness, r bitterness t a fd simply by playing the right srt f music. We’ve created music t enhance sweetness and bitterness, and we als have music fr sur, and spicy fds. Wrking with the Michelin-starred chclatier Dminique Persne in Belgium, we even shwed that if we played ‘creamy’ music in his stres w e culd add extra creaminess t his chclate.
Neurscientists have fund direct cnnectins in the muse brain between the senses f smell and sund, s it might be that this ccurs in humans t. Snic seasning is already being used t enhance meals in fancy restaurants, but we culd als see it being used t benefit health by, fr example, playing ’sweet’ music s that we’re happy with less sugar in ur fd.
What’s the mst innvative use f gastrphysics yu’ve seen?
There’s a lt happening in the wrld f cutlery design. Hestn Blumenthal’s restaurant The Fat Duck is currently serving a dish called Cunting Sheep, which cmes with a fluffy (毛茸茸的), weighted spn that smells f baby pwder, designed t enhance the eating experience. We’ve fund that fd tends t taste better with heavier cutlery -- pssibly because we assciate weight with quality.
    60. Which f the fllwing statements is true f gastrphysics?
    A. It cvers different subjects.B. It neglects fd t sme extent.
    C. It has been in existence fr lng.D. It is created by a psychphysicist.
    61. Accrding t Charles Spence, hw can snic seasning be used t d gd t ur health?
    A. Helping us t be mre resistant t the temptatin t eat unhealthy fd.
    B. Playing sme music t make us feel ur fd is sweeter than It really is.
    C. Making experiments with mice t find ut what fd benefits ur health.
    D. Training human brains t assciate certain sunds with a particular flavur.
    62. Which f the fllwing examples best illustrates the use f gastrphysics?
    A. A restaurant hires a psychlgist t design its layut.
    B. A restaurant varies the sweetness f its fd.
    C. A restaurant uses heavier plates t serve fd.
    D. A restaurant asks its custmers fr suggestins.
    (C)
If yu watch wlves, it’s hard t escape the cnclusin that perhaps n tw species are mre alike behavirally than wlves and humans. We can easily recgnize the scial structures in wlf packs. N wnder human males ften face pressure t measure up as “alpha” males—t “wlf up,” as it were. The term alpha male implies a man wh at every mment demnstrates that he’s in cntrl in the hme and wh away frm hme can becme aggressive.
This alpha male steretype (固定印象) cmes frm a misunderstanding f the real thing.
“The main characteristic f an alpha male wlf,” the wlf researcher Rick McIntyre tld me as we were watching gray wlves in Yellwstne Natinal Park, “is a quiet cnfidence, quiet self-assurance.”
The pint is, alpha males are nt aggressive. There is an evlutinary lgic t it.
“Imagine tw wlf packs, r tw human tribes,” McIntyre said. “Which is mre likely t survive and reprduce: the ne whse members are mre cperative, mre sharing, less vilent with ne anther, r the grup whse members are beating each ther up and cmpeting with ne anther?”
McIntyre has spent 20 years watching and studying wlves in Yellwstne fr the Natinal Park Service. He rises early, uses radi telemetry t lcate a pack thrugh a radi-cllared pack member, then heads ut with his sptting scpe t bserve the animals, keeping careful ntes f their activities. In all that time, he has rarely seen an alpha male act aggressively tward the pack’s ther members.
This des nt mean that alpha males are nt tugh when they need t be. One famus wlf in Yellwstne whse radi cllar number, 21, became his name, was cnsidered a “super wlf” by the peple wh clsely bserved the arc f his life. He was fierce in defense f family and apparently never lst a fight with a rival pack. Yet within his wn pack, ne f his favrite things was t wrestle with little wlves and t pretend t lse.
One year, a pup was a bit sickly. The ther pups seemed t be afraid f him and wuldn’t play with him. Once, after delivering fd fr the small pups, 21 std lking arund fr smething. Sn he started wagging his tail. He’d been lking fr the sickly little pup, and he went ver just-t hang ut with him fr a while.
Of all McIntyre’s stries abut the super wlf, that’s his favrite. Strength impresses us. But kindness is what we remember best.
    63. What d peple usually think f “alpha males”?
    A. They are the grup f wlves that resemble humans mst.
    B. They are dminant nt nly at hme but als away frm hme.
    C. They are fnd f fighting against pressure frm ppnents.
    D. They are a necessary part f humans’ scial structures.
    64. McIntyre is quted in paragraph 5 in rder t ________.
    A. shw alpha male wlves’ characteristic helps their packs survive
    B. prve cperative wlves are mre likely t be alpha male wlves
    C. stress that being willing t share is what wlves have in cmmn
    D. illustrate that an alpha male wlf is brn t be tugh and aggressive
    65. After a wlf pack gets a prey (猎物), what will an alpha male wlf mst likely d?
    A. Cmpete with ther pack members. B. Keep it in a place unknwn t his pack.
    C. Wait until his pack has eaten and is full. D. Make sure that n pack member eats it alne.
    66. It is 21 ’s ________ that will leave McIntyre and the writer a lasting impressin.
    A. attackB. defenseC. strengthD. kindness

Hw t Keep Yur Digital Memries Safe?
D yu value yur digital stuff? Nearly everyne is creating things with cmputers, and sme d it withut any cncern fr its value. Others recgnise its current value, but think little abut what it culd mean t them in the future, and either isn’t aware r desn’t think that all f it culd be destryed tmrrw. But hard drives die all the time, and the nline services int which peple sink their time clse with alarming regularity, taking the wrk f millins f peple with it.
    67
    Here are the steps:
    1. Prepare t make a quick backup.
If nthing else, get a cheap USB stick and drag-and-drp yur dcuments flder nt it. Wrry abut the ther things later. Yu shuld d mre than this, but it’s mst imprtant t take the mst valuable, irreplaceable infrmatin frm yur hard drive and put it n a secnd medium t guard against hard drive failure, theft r lss.
    2. Decide what yu value.
Sme questins t ask yurself are: Hw replaceable is this data? Hw gd are yu at assessing the value f items? 68 Fr things like business accunts and dcuments, the answer is f curse yu wuld. This kind f thing shuld be yur first pririty.
    3. Start making backups.
69 Diminishing returns (效益递减) apply in backups as they d with everything else. The cheapest and simplest backup methds take care f an verwhelming majrity f likely lss-f-stuff. Over-cmplicating yur backup strategy is the biggest trap: the mre cmplicated and expensive yu insist n making it, the less likely yu are t d it.
    4. 70
If ne f yur backup drives fails, replace it immediately. Remember that all strage devices eventually becme bslete (陈旧的). If yu have valuable files n bslete media, thse files becme increasingly difficult t access with every passing year. S in rder t keep yur files accessible, remember t migrate yur cllectin t new strage media peridically.
